Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara – Another gem from Deivathin Kural on Saraswathi Devi and her significance. The importance staying humble even if one reaches great heights has been emphasized here.
Many Jaya Jaya Sankara to Shri. B. Narayanan Mama for the great translation. Ram Ram

Saraswathi
Saraswathi PoojA comes in ‘Sarath rutu’ (Autumn—-month of October). This NavarAthri(nine—night festival) is called ‘Sarath NavarAthri’, because it comes during Sarath rutu. Saraswathi is also called ‘SArathA’. ( In Manthra SAstrA, other theoretical meanings have been given for the name ‘SArathA)
There are plenty of Pundits in Kashmir. There is even a caste by its name. Mothilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru belong to this category. The reason for the presence there of such ‘Vidhvath GOshti’ ( group of VEdhic Pundits) in plenty is the abundant prevalence of worship of Saraswathi (God of Letter) in Kashmir. There was one ‘SArathA PeetA’ there. The Vedic excellence of great Pundits was recognized and accepted only if they ascend that PeethA; ascending the PeetA was a crowning glory for them.
In our Tamil Nadu, region of Kanchi in Thondai Mandalam had the name ‘KashmIra Mandalam, once upon a time. If there was a MathurA where Lord KrishnA was born in the North, then there is a Madurai in the South where MeenAkshi incarnated. As there is a PAtaliputhrA in the North, there is a PAtaliputhrA in NadunAdu (the area between the Chola kingdom and ThondainaAdu—present South Arcot); this is now called ThirippAthiripuliyUr(Cuddalore). There is KAsi in the North and there is ThenkAsi in Tirunelveli district. Same way, Kanchi region is South Kashmir. Poet Mookar ( He was Poet KAlidAsA in his previous birth) says that the presence of Saraswathi is special here, ( ‘SAraswatha PurushakAra SAmrAjye’). Poet Mookar was born a dumb, and he became a famous poet by the Grace of KAmAkshi who came as Saraswathi and blessed him. In KAmAkshi temple there is a separate Sannidhi (Sanctum Sanctoram) for Saraswathi with eight hands. Adhi Sankarar, excelled in all arts and ascended the ‘Sarvagna Peeta’ in Kanchipuram. He named the KAmakOti Peeta, which He established, as ‘SArathA Matam’. All these go to show the special connection that existed between Kanchipuram and Saraswathi.
From ancient times, there were many ‘VidhyAsAlAs’ (places for study); they were called ‘KatikAsthAnam’. Like NalandA and Dhakshaseelam in North, these institutions were big as universities. In a stone carving near Thiruvallam, it is written, ‘Katikai EzhAyiravar’ ( கடிகை ஏழாயிரவர்); It shows that seven thousand students studied here. In Shimoga district of Mysore (now, Karnataka) there is a place called Shikarpur. In the Pranaveswaraswamy temple there, an ancient stone carving exists. It is mentioned in the carving, that king Mayuravarman who ruled Karnataka in the 4th century A.D, came to a ‘Katikai’ in Kanchipuram along with his Guru Veerasarman to study. In another Samskrit stone carving found in Velurpalayam near Arakkonam, it is mentioned that the now-world famous Kailasanathar temple was built by Pallava King Narasimhavarma (aka)Rajasimha Pallavan; but before mentioning this, it mentions as a very important incident, that the king re-established the old ‘Katikai’ in Kanchi. Appar Swamikal has also sung ‘Kalviyil karai illatha Kanchi’ (கல்வியில் கரையில்லாத காஞ்சி—–Kanchi, which excels in education).
In ‘Mooka Panchasathi’ (1008 slOkAs on KAmAkshi by poet Mookar), there is a slokA called ‘AAryA sathaka slOkA’, which likens KAmAkshi to Saraswathi. It starts with ‘Vimalabadee’. He says that she is adorned with the pure, faultless white robe. The whole of Kashmir is like this, filled with snow-capped mountains, the whole area looking as Saraswathi. This is also the speciality of Sarath rutu. The moon which is specially called ‘SarathChandran’ by the poets covers the whole world with a pure white robe. During this Sarath rutu only, white clouds wander everywhere, covering the sky with a white robe. The true ‘VidhyA’ , a blessing from Saraswathi will be like the white clouds of Sarath rutu, pure and cooling. The education learnt from books gives only distress and pain. True VidhyA only gives peace and will quench the thirst.
Thinking about the Saraswathi Pooja period and talking about the peace that removes the mental tension, I find another favourable thought. The appearance of the outside world affects our mind and makes it synchronize with it. Our enthusiasm bubbles up during early morning when the light starts showing up. If the sky is overcast, and the rain drizzles, we also feel dull and gloomy. During the BrAhma Muhoortham before dawn, and dusk, a peaceful atmosphere prevails, and that helps our mind to calm down and sit for meditation. When the outside world assumes its own nature, if we try to bring our mind also to its natural state, it helps bring our mind under control, merge the inside with the outside, and sink into a bliss. As the above situation prevails during dawn and dusk every day, so also if we consider one full year, and try finding a similar atmosphere amenable to the mental attitude, it is this season of Saraswathi PoojA. The weather is very pleasing, gratifying, neither warm nor chill. It is the season when the sun is mild, the moon is bright and the sky with pure white clouds.
The speciality of this is that this type of weather prevails over the whole of the land of BhArath during the beginning of the Sarath Rutu. During other seasons, the weather at one end of the country will be very different from that at the other end. During (Tamil months) Pankuni and Chithirai (March 15th —-May 15th), the heat in Telungu DEsam (Andhra Pradesh) will be more severe than in Tamil Nadu. If you go to Madhya Pradesh, Delhi etc. the temperature there will be 10 to 12 degrees more than in our place. Likewise, during Markazhi(Dec. 15th—Jan 15th), it will be cold in our region, but in the North, it will be so chill that water will turn into ice. The plentiful rain that we get during Aippasi, Karthikai (Oct 15th —Dec. 15th) is not there in the North. While it rains cats and dogs in our neighbourhood Kerala during Vaikasi—Aani (May 15th —July 15th ), In our region, it is mostly dry except for some occasional summer showers. During the same time, it rains in Vindhya Parvatham and Madhya Pradesh. Thus, the weather which is so varied in each region, is almost same all over the country during the beginning of SarathRutu (Saraswathi Pooja time); it is very soothing, the temperature not above 95 deg.F and not below 75 deg. F. When we look at the weather report of all places from Kashmir, Delhi, Kashi, Calcutta, Bombay, Kancheepuram, Kodagu, Kanyakumari, we see that the maximum and minimum temperatures are more or less the same. The difference is not 8 to 10 degrees, like in other seasons. As far as the weather conditions are concerned, all of us are together under the same conditions. This weather resembles the nature of Saraswathi the God of VidhyA, who drives away the differences among us with the message that we are all ONE through GnAnam(wisdom). When this similar weather, pure white colour and peace prevail all over the country, it is easy and convenient to create such a similar state of mind in us. As the worship of Saraswathi, who comes in this Roopa, also occurs during this time, all the humanity can acquire the wisdom and clarity if they worship Her with this realization.
All of us know that JapamAlai(garland used during Japam) and the Palmscript leaves are the identities of Wisdom. We can find both these in the hands of the DevathAs of ultimate wisdom, DhakshinAmoorthy and Saraswathi.
Palmscript indicate Vidhya. If we look at the present system of education which imagines that mere studying is education, then I am inclined to think that VidhyA and Wisdom are two different things. The old system where VidhyA was Wisdom, has gone away. In olden days, all VidhyAs(skills, arts etc.) helped us identify ParamAtmA. Thiruvalluvar also asks what is the use of the education which does not make one worship the lotus feet of ParamEswaran.
In ancient times, all VidhyAs were created to give one, the wisdom to wipe out ego and help join the Ultimate Matter. Other egos apart, one will first get the ego “I am a VidhwAn” due to education. That is why our ancestors, mentioned Humility also along with VidhyA.
At present, education has been tailored to cater to ‘Loukeekam’ (Material worldly matters) only. We take pride in committing sins out of our smartness by learning different sciences and get away with it. If the knowledge acquired out of the present system of education is called ‘Wisdom’, then I will declare that lack of ‘wisdom’ is the path to Mukthi (libaration). I am supposed to be the representative of the philosophy of AdhvaitA, which preaches that wisdom is the path to liberation. But when I look at the various atrocities happening in the ‘advanced’ countries, I feel that the aborigines and forest dwellers who have no education, and living in total ignorance are the ones who will get the ‘Eswara PrasAdham’. I think it is good for us also to become like them.
Today’s education and teaching methods only help ego and ‘Loukeekam’ to grow; but we should not talk ill of the true (AtmArtha) SAstrAs, arts and VidhyAs. The latter were designed to wipe out ego and give welfare to the world and the Atman. Even now, with the newly developed sciences and technologies, we can bring welfare to the world and develop our wisdom. If we go deep into the atomic science, which says that the origin of the energy of all elements is only one matter which is the atom, that itself will lead us to ‘Atmeeka Adhvaitam’. If we follow the system of life designed by our ancestors, without running after things due to greed and desire, and practice the VidhyAs, even now, it will do good to the outside world and give wisdom to the inner mind.
Proper diet is important along with medicine. For the medicine that is VidhyA, humility is the proper diet. At present, the medicine has become poison because there is no ‘diet’. If VidhyA is learnt with humility, then it will be the nectar, that gives wisdom. That is why, both Dhakshinamoorthy and Saraswathi are the DevathAs for wisdom. All of you are aware that Saraswathi knows all arts and is VidhyA’s nature. VedhAs say that Dhakshinamoorthy is the lord of all VidhyAs. Dhakshinamoorthy, who is in a state of total bliss where speech, deed and knowing have all become inactive, is also the ‘MEdhA Dhakshinamoorthy, who bestows knowledge, speech and wisdom. Both Saraswathi and Dhakshinamoorthy, who hold the palm script and the ‘JapaMAlai’ also wear the moon crest on their heads. It is called ‘Kalai’ in Tamil. ‘Kalai’ means that which grows. There is no end to knowledge. Saraswathi Herself thinks that what She knows is very little (measure of mud held with one palm) and what is not learnt is the size of the world. What She wears on Her head is the third day moon’s crest; that has to grow to a full moon.
Saraswathi also has a third eye like Dhakshinamoorthy. There is no wisdom without burning down desire. That is why She has the third eye which burnt down ‘Kaman’ (God of lust). Both of them have ‘crown of hair’ (ஜடாமகுடம்). This is also an identity of wise men.
Both of them are of pure white colour. White which does not stay with the other seven colours, indicates the state of ultimate bliss. When this white becomes totally transparent so as to allow light to pass through it, it becomes crystal. Both Dhakshinamoorthy and Saraswathi, have in their hands garlands made of these crystals. When we think of the white colour, moon crest and the crystal garland, we get to a state of purity, coolness and peace.
