Deepavali Eve – A Rishabam rescued directly from Illegal Slaughterhouse

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara – In continuation of the previous post, after closing the deal of 20 native breed cows and heading back home I drove through quite a few slaughter houses along the way. Being Deepavali weekend the sale of red meat was in huge demand and you could see many cows waiting to be killed. There were quite a few illegal slaughterhouses along the roadside when one of them caught my attention as there was a handsome native breed rishabam standing ready to be taken inside for butchering. Instinctly I stopped my car on the roadside got out of the car and walked straight inside the slaughterhouse. The guys had just finished killing a cow and the rishabam you see was the last one left which was ready to be taken inside.

Initially, the guys did not agree to sell the cow, they called the owner (bhai) who after my repeated pleas reluctantly agreed to sell the cow for a higher price. While all this drama was going on, I also observed many hindus walking casually into the beef shop and purchasing beef. Although I knew and have seen all these before, the number of people who came in were a bit staggering. I enquired a couple of people and they mentioned since beef costs less than mutton they prefer to buy beef. Pathetic…..

The reality when we purchase cows from slaughter house is, first they won’t sell you at all, you need to really plead with them especially when they have ‘customers’ waiting in the queue and don’t even want to be talking to you. Secondly, they also talk pretty rudely. Also, there is no room for any sort of negotiations inside a slaughterhouse and the price is higher as well since they have to make their margins along with recovering their transportation costs. The cow also would deliberately be left to starve so they would be weak and would offer little resistance when killing.

These are the reasons I try to get to the root and buy cows from owners directly who are ready to sell even before butchers and brokers are involved. We can negotiate and purchase them at a lesser price. Asked the butchers to wait for a few minutes, ran to a nearby ATM, got the money and paid him the price. Called my truck driver who came after an hour and transported the cow safely to Ghosala. This goes to show how fickle lives can be and the margin between life and death hangs on by a thread.

By Sri Periyava Anugruham managed to save 21 cows on the eve of Deepavali. I thought I was done for the day but Periyava apparently thought otherwise…Will continue the rescue operations postings shortly. Sri Periyava Thiruvadi Sharanam. Rama Rama

  1. We can only pray to Maha Periyava to bless you for the physical & mental strength to cope up with this kind of arduous service (apart from making regular contribution).

  2. Dear Srinivasan, the account details for donations (in India) seems to be different than before. Shall we delete the Pratyaksha trust details from our payment registrations for cow rescue. This clarification will help many who have the old account details in their payee list.

    • Yes, please do make your contributions to the trust account mentioned in the post. This trust is also 80G exempt to which I have direct online access to check the credits which is not possible with Prathyaksha leading to bureaucracy and multiple follow-ups. Thanks. Rama Rama
