Experiences with Maha Periyava: Puncturing the Ego

I witnessed an incident about 4 decades back in Kalavai, when I went to have a darshan of Maha Periyava on His Jayanthi day. There was as usual a huge crowd. My wife and I were waiting when He appeared suddenly from another side. The crowd started moving towards Him. There was a 50 year old man with gold chains adorning the neck and his wife prostrated before Him. Sri Maha Periyava was in mouna vratham. He looked a very well placed businessman.

Periyava enquired,”How are you?” in mouna.

This man and his wife gave a pamphlet showing that he had conducted ‘Samashti Upanayanam’ for 4 days for poor Brahmins in KK Nagar (free Upanayanams with all costs born by him.) Periyava looked at the pamphlet. There was silence. He asked him “How much did you spend?” “He said a few lacs.” Silence.

Periyava asked him in mouna, about a boy called “Dakshinamurthy of Tirunelveli. This man got a shock of his life. Periyava disappeared!

This man started weeping uncontrollably. .His wife tried to pacify and a few journalists present asked him, “Sir what happened? Why are you crying?”

He went on repeating,” I am a criminal. I am a criminal.” Then he explained,”I had a widowed sister few years ago and her son’s name is Dakshinamurthy. I took care of them but she also passed away. I did not like to keep that boy in my house and drove him away and I do not know where he is. Periyava ‘indirectly’ asked me today ‘You do Samashti Upanayanam’ for all but you have forgotten your own sister’s son! Now I have to somehow find him and make him a man.”

  1. Hara Hara Sankara Jaya Jaya Sankara. Pahi Pahi Sri Maha Prabho. Janakiraman. Nagapattinam

  2. In the same pattern, another anecdote goes……about Adhi Rudram conducted by a Mirasdar
in tiruvidai marudhur……..who did not pay adequately Dakshina to a aged Veda Pandit, insulted him by refusing second serve of Sakkara Pongal…Readers must be aware..of the incident… Every body , cannot get blessings or prasadam unless they deserve it…The mistake is brought out to their knowledge very nicely, to correct them..Vedanarayanan Pune

  3. Yes what a self-conscious MahaPerivaa to that person who did the Samashti Upanayanam. With pamphlet printed propagation! Hence he was crying before Perivaa when our GURU immediately spelt out name of Dakshinamoorthy. Yes, in the present day of 21 st Century context, though our Mahaperivaa guides us with his sukshmarupaa, let us all follow our Self consciousness as a visible presence of our beloved Guru and act on the truth path coded for or eternal bliss.

  4. Does the story goes ahead…. HE. Calls the Manager, (with a sodakku of fingers) , and sends for a boy to come there… A boy who is working in the matam, as a helper in Pooja etc… Is Brought before HH. YES, IT was DAKSHINANOORTHI only, who has been given aashrayam in the matam, by HH, after he was driven out, and no one to care… THE Gold chain sobs more, embraces the nephew apologetically and prostrates at the feet of HH… Vedanarayanan.

    • Madam,
Like you mention, a few more dramatic touches would have made the narrative even more thrilling with a proper climax also !!

  5. In our ignorant pompous lives, many of us are capable of behaving like this man. With Prayers and more Prayers alone can we get over such base instincts. By Sri Periyavaa’s Blessings & Grace I am sure we will cross the river of ego with slight bruises.
