போலகம் கோபால அய்யர் என்பவர் ஸ்ரீமடத்தின் தொண்டர்; பெரியவாளிடம் அதீதமான பக்தியுடையவர்.
திண்டுக்கல் அருகிலுள்ள சிறுமலையில் ஸ்ரீமடத்துக்கு சொந்தமான தோட்டம் இருக்கிறது.ஒரு தடவை,
எஸ்டேட் மேற்பார்வைக்காக, சிறுமலை சென்று திரும்பி வரும்போது சுமார் ஐந்நூறு மலை வாழைப்
பழங்கள் கொண்டுவந்து பெரியவாளிடம் சமர்ப்பித்தார்.
“மடத்து எஸ்டேட்டில் விளைந்த பழம், பெரியவாளுக்காகக் கொண்டு வந்திருக்கேன்…”
ஒரு சீப்பிலிருந்து ஒரு பழத்தை மட்டும் எடுத்துத் தன் மடியில் வைத்துக்கொண்டார்கள் பெரியவாள்.
பெரியவாளுக்கு நேர் எதிரில் முந்நூறு அடிக்கு அப்பால் நரிக்குறவர்கள் கூட்டம் தங்கியிருந்தது.
சமையல்,சாப்பாடு, தூக்கம் – எல்லாம் மரத்தடியில்தான்!
கார்வாரைக் கூப்பிட்டார்கள் பெரியவாள்.
“இதோ,பாரு… எல்லா மலைப்பழம்,பக்தர்கள் கொண்டுவந்த, கல்கண்டு, திராட்சை, தேங்காய்,
மாம்பழம் சாத்துக்குடி, கமலா – எல்லாத்தையும் மூட்டையாகக்கட்டி நரிக்குறவர்களிடம்
கொடுத்துட்டு வா…”
ஸ்ரீமடத்தில் தங்கியிருந்த அனந்தானந்த ஸ்வாமிகள் என்ற துறவி அப்போது அங்கு இருந்தார்.அவருக்கு
இப்படி எல்லாவற்றையும் மொத்தமாக நரிக்குறவர்களுக்குக் கொடுப்பது நியாயமாகப் படவில்லை.
“இது என்ன புதுப் பழக்கம்? இவ்வளவு பழங்களையும் குறவர்களுக்குக் கொடுக்கணுமா?”
பெரியவாள் நிதானமாகப் பதில் சொன்னார்கள்.
“நாம் எல்லோரும் நமது கலாசாரத்தை மாற்றிக் கொண்டுவிட்டோம் – கிராப்பு,டிராயர், ஷர்ட், மீசை
ஹோட்டல்,டீக்கடை,சீமைக்குப் போவது – எல்லாம் வந்துவிட்டது. பாரத கலாசாரமே போயிடுத்து.
“ஆனா,ஏழைகளான இந்த நரிக்குறவர்களை பாருங்கோ அவாளோட சிகை, டிரஸ், பழக்க வழக்கம், பரம்பரையா வந்த பாசிமணி மாலை,ஊசி விற்பது -இவைகளை விட்டுவிடல்லே.
“கூடியமட்டும் திருடமாட்டா.குறத்திகள் கற்பைக் காக்கிறவர்கள்.அந்த ஜாதிக்குள்ளேயே கல்யாணம்.
மறுநாளைப் பற்றிக் கவலைப்படறதில்லை. வெட்டவெளியில் சமையல்,சாப்பாடு, தூக்கம். இதுவரை அரசியலில் ஈடுபடவில்லை. அதனாலே, சுயநலம் – கெட்ட புத்தி வரல்லே.குடும்ப கட்டுப்பாடு –
(மகாபாபம்) – அதை செய்து கொள்றதில்லே. நாடோடிகள். அன்றன்று சாமான் வாங்கி சமையல்.
இவர்கள் தான் ‘ஒரிஜனல் ஹிந்து கல்சரை’ இன்னிக்கு வரை கடைப்பிடித்து வருகிறார்கள். பழங்கால ரிஷிகள் போல, கவலையில்லாமல் வாழ்கிறார்கள்…..”
அந்த கிராமத்திலிருந்து பெரியவாள் புறப்பட்டபோது, நூற்றுக்கணக்கில் நரிக்குறவர்கள் வழியனுப்ப
வந்தார்கள். அரை கிலோமீட்டர் தூரத்தில், அவர்களை ஆசீர்வதித்து,திரும்பிப் போகச் சொன்னார்கள் பெரியவாள்.

Polakam Gopala Iyer was a sevaka at Srimatham. He had intense devotion towards Mahaperiyava.
At Sirumalai, close to Dindigal, there were some orchards belonging to Srimatham. Once, while returning from Sirumalai after some supervision work at the orchard, he brought about five hundred mountain bananas and made an offering of it ( samarpanam) to Mahaperiyava.
“Fruits that grew in the Srimatham’s estate. I have brought them for Periyava.”
From one bunch, He took only one banana and placed it on His lap.
Three hundred feet or so in front of Mahaperiyava, a group of Narikuravar (a nomadic forest tribe of Tamil Nadu) were living. Cooking, eating, sleeping – everything under that tree only.
The kaarvaar (kind of a manager, logistics incharge all in one) was called by Periyava.
” Look here……. All these mountain bananas, and the sugar candy, raisins, coconuts, mangoes, sweetlimes, kamala oranges -make a sack of all these and give it to the Narikuravar and come”.
A sanyasi living is the Srimatham, Ananthaananda Swamigal, was there at that time.
He felt it not fair that everyrhing should be given completely, all at once to them.
“What new habit is this? Do we have to gjve all these fruits aĺl at once to them?
Mahaperiyava replied calmly.
“We have all changed our kalaachaaram ( culture) completely – cropped hair, drawers, shirt, moustache…., eating at hotels, teashops, going abroad (living in foriegn countries) everything has come to us. Bhaaratha kalaacharàm is gone lost.
But look at these Narikuravaa who are poor. Their shikha (tuft of hair on head), dress, their ways and habits, their seĺling if beads and needles which has come down from generations, they have not let go of anything.
As far as possible, they do not steal. The kurathis (ladies of the tribe) protect their honor. Marriages are within their sect only. Cooking, eating, sleeping all in the open only. They do not worry about the next day. Up until now, they have not gotten involved in politics, because of that, selfishness, bad mind (buddhi) has not come to them. Family Planning – Mahapaapum – they don’t do that. Nomads. For cooking, things are bought on that day only.
They only, Till Today, have been adhering to the “Original Hindu Culture”(His own words). Like the rishis of yore, they live without worries…..”
From this village, when Periyava readied to leave, hundreds of Narikuravaas came to see Him off. Travelling a distance of half kilometer with themk, after blessing them generously, Periyava asked them to turn back….
