காமாக்ஷி அம்மன் கோவிலில் எல்லா சன்னிதிகளிலும் தரிசனம் முடிந்தவுடன் ஆசார்யாள் சின்னக் காஞ்சியில் உள்ள மடத்துக்கு சிஷ்யர்கள், புதுப் பெரியவா சகிதம் நடக்கத் தொடங்கினார். ஒரு கனவு கண்டு விழித்தது போல் இருந்தது சிட்டிக்கு. தன்னைப் பெரியவா உடன் வரும்படி அழைத்தது கூட கவனியாமல், தன் நண்பர்கள் சகிதம், சமீபத்திலிருந்த ஹோட்டலுக்குச் சென்று காலை உணவை எடுத்துக் கொண்டு, ஒரு வீட்டுத் திண்ணையில் அமர்ந்து வெற்றிலைப் பாக்கைச் சுவைக்க ஆரம்பித்து விட்டார்கள்.

மேலும் அந்த ஆங்கில உரையைப் பற்றி பெரியவர் ஒன்றும் சொல்லாததால் அது குறித்து காஞ்சி சென்று பெரியவரிடம் பேசலாமா? என்று யோசித்துக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

திடீரென்று மடத்து சிஷ்யர் ஒருவர் அங்கு வேகமாக வந்து, ”உங்களை எங்கெல்லாம் தேடுவது” என்று சொல்லி”பெரியவா உங்களை அழைக்கிறார்” என்று முடித்தார்.

சிட்டி உடனே பதட்டத்துடன் தான் உட்கார்ந்திருந்த வீட்டிலேயே ஒரு சொம்பு தண்ணீர் வாங்கிக் கொப்புளித்து விட்டு அந்த சிஷ்யரைப் பின் தொடர்ந்தார்.

பெரியவரைப் பார்ததும் அவர் புன் முறுவலுடன் ”என்ன காபி, டிஃபன் எல்லாம் ஆயிற்றா” என்று கேட்டார்.

அதைக் கேட்ட சிட்டி மனம் நெகிழ்ந்து விட்டார்.அதன் பின் நடந்தது பின்வருமாறு: ”ஏதோ இங்க்லீஷில் எழுதி வந்திருக்கேன் என்று சொன்னாயே, அதைப் படித்துக் காட்டு பார்க்கலாம்” என்றார் பெரியவா.

தான் வரும்போது வசரமாகக் கழற்றிய சட்டை கையில் இருந்தது; அதில் நல்லவேளையாக அந்த ஆங்கில மொழிபெயர்ப்பு இருந்தது.அதை வாசித்துக் காட்ட ஆரம்பித்தேன்;எங்களுக்குப் பின்னால் புதுப் பெரியவாளும், ஏநைய சிஷ்யர்களும் , பக்தர்களும் வந்து கொண்டிருந்தார்கள்.

காலை வேளை; நல்ல வெயிலும் கூட! நான் படிப்பதை உன்னிப்புடன் கவனித்து வந்தார்கள்.

ஒரு இடத்தில் அவர் உரையில் ”ப்ரவசனத்துக்காக நமது நாட்டில் பல வள்ளல்கள் பெரிய தொகை கொடையாக அளித்திருக்கிறார்கள்” என்று சொல்லியிருந்தார்.

அதை நான் ஆங்கிலத்தில்” Munifecent donors have endowed large amounts of funds for this purpose ” என்று மொழி பெயர்த்திருந்தேன்.

பெரியவா அந்த வாக்கியத்தை மீண்டும் ஒரு முறை வாசிக்கச் சொல்லிக் கேட்டு விட்டு, donors என்று சொல்லியிருக்கியா? philonthropists என்று சொல்லிப் பார்” என்றார்!

அந்த ஒரு வார்த்தையில் அவர் வள்ளல்கள் என்பதன் பொருளை அழகாக பெருமைப்படுத்தி விட்டார். பெரியவருடைய ஆங்கிலப் புலமைக்கு மற்றும் ஒரு எடுத்துக் காட்டு, நான் எழுதிய ஆங்கிலச் சொற்களில் இலக்கணப் பிழை இருந்தது ; அதையும் சுட்டிக் காட்டி, அன்புடன் திருத்தச் சொன்னார்.

நடந்து கொண்டே நான் உரையைப் படித்ததை அவர் கேட்டுக் கொண்டும் திருத்தங்கள் செய்து கொண்டும் சென்றபோது,அந்தக் காட்சியை சாலையின் இரு புறமும் இருந்து பார்த்தவர்களுக்கு வினோதமாக இருந்திருக்கும். இந்த சமயத்தில் எனக்கு மீண்டும் ஒரு தர்ம சங்கடம்; ஸ்னானம் செய்துகொண்டிருக்கும்போது ஏற்பட்டாற்போல்! சாலையில் நாங்கள் நடந்து சொல்லும்போது சாலையில் ஜனங்கள் அவரை விழுந்து நமஸ்காரம் செய்து கொண்டிருந்தனர். அவருடன் அப்போது செல்வது எனக்குப் பொருத்தமாகத் தோன்றவில்லை.

அதற்கு நான் அருகதையற்றவன் என நினைத்து, மீதியை, மடத்துக்குச் சென்று படிக்க அனுமதி கேட்டேன்.

”ஏன்” என வினவினார்.

நான் ”தங்களுடன் பக்தர்கள் நமஸ்கரிக்கும்போது வருவது பொருத்தமாகத் தோன்றவில்லை” என்று சொன்னேன்.

”பரவாயில்லை அந்த நமஸ்காரங்களில் அம்பது பெர்சென்ட் நீ எடுத்துக் கொள் ” என்று ஹாஸ்யமாக பதில் சொல்லி மேலே படிக்கவும் சொன்னார்.

சுமார் முக்கால் மணி நேரம் உரையின் மொழி பெயர்ப்பை வாசித்தபின் சாலையிலேயே என்னை நிறுத்தி, ”நன்றாக எழுதியிருக்கிறாய்” என ஆசிர்வதித்து, அருகில் நின்ற சிஷ்யர்களிடமிருந்து குங்கும ப்ரசாதமும், தேங்காயும் கொடுத்து ”சென்று வா” என அருளினார்.

அதற்கு முன் வீதியில் பெரியவாளுடன் பேசுகையில், திரைப்படங்களில் புராணக் கதைகள் பற்றி சிட்டி கேட்டதற்கு, புராணங்கள், ”இதிஹாசங்கள் இவற்றை ஜனங்களிடம் பரப்புவதற்காக படமாக்குவதில் எனக்கு ஆக்ஷேபணை இல்லை; ஆனால் அவற்றில் மனிதர்களை அந்தக் கதாபாத்திரங்களில் நடிக்க வைக்காமல், சிற்பங்கள், ஓவியங்கள் இவற்றை வைத்து எடுக்கலாம்” என்று பதில் சொன்னார்.

அவரின் அரிய அருளைப் பெற்ற சிட்டி அந்தத் தீராத மயக்கத்துடன் நண்பர்களிடம் பகிர்ந்தபோது, அவர்களும் அதைத் தான் பெற்ற பேறு என மகிழ்ந்தார்கள். மறுபடி நான்கு வருட இடைவெளிக்கப்புறம் மீண்டும் அதுபோல் ஓர் வாய்ப்பு கிட்டியது!

After taking Darshan in all the Sannithis in the Kamakshi Amman kovil, AcharyaL began walking towards the Matam in Chinna Kanchi along with Pudhu Periyava and some disciples. Chitti felt as if he had just woken up from a dream. Without even noticing that he was asked to accompany Periyava, he went to a restaurant along with his friends. After finishing breakfast, they settled down on the verandah of a house and started eating betel leaves and nuts.

Since Periyava did not comment anything on his English exposition, he was thinking of whether he should go to Kanchi and talk to Periyava about it.

Suddenly a disciple of the Matam came there and said, “I have been searching for you all over. Periyava is asking for you”

Chitti hurriedly asked for a mug of water from that house itself, cleaned his mouth and went after the disciple.

Periyava saw him and asked with a smile, “So, have you finished your coffee, tiffin etc ?”

Hearing that, Chitti’s heart melted. Periyava motioned for Chitti to follow Him and said, “You said you have written something in English; read it out for Me. Let’s see”

On his way to see Periyava, Chitti had hurriedly removed his shirt. Fortunately, the English translation was in it. I started to read it out to Him. Pudhu Periyava, some devotees and disciples were coming behind us.

It was morning time and the sun was really hot ! HE was attentively listening to what I was reading.

At one point in the exposition, there was a line where He had said (in Tamil), ‘Pravachanathukkaga namathu nattil pala vaLLalgal periya thogai kodaiyaaga aLithirukkiraargaL’

I had translated it in english as ‘Munificent donors have endowed large amounts of funds for this purpose’

Periyava asked me to read that line again and said, “You have used the word ‘donors’. Try replacing that with ‘philanthropists'”!

With that word, He glorified the meaning of the word ‘VaLLal’. This was another example of Periyava’s expertise in English. There was a flaw in my translation and Periyava thus pointed it out and corrected me gently.

The scene of me walking along with Periyava reading out the exposition and Periyava listening and correcting must have been novel to people standing on either side of the road. I was caught in another dilemna then. When we were walking like that, people were falling down prostrate and doing Namaskarams to Periyava. It did not seem appropriate for me to be walking along with Him then.

Thinking I was not qualified enough, I asked permission from Periyava to continue the rest at the Matam.

Periyava asked why.

I said, “I do not think it is appropriate for me to accompany You when devotees are doing Namaskarams”

HE replied jokingly, “That’s allright. You can take 50% of those Namaskarams”, and asked me to resume reading.

After having read about 75% of the translation, Periyava stopped me on the road itself, said, “You have done well” and blessed me. HE took kumkum, Prasadam and coconut from the disciples and gave them to me. Then He asked me to take leave.

During the walk with Periyava, when Chitti asked Periyava about the depiction of Puranic stories in films, Periyava said, “I don’t have any objection against the depiction of history and PuraNams in films to spread their message amongst the people. But instead of having people enact these roles, I would prefer it if they used animation”

Having got His benign grace, when Chitti shared these experiences with his friends, they felt very happy for Chitti. After an interval of 4 years, I got a similar opportunity.
