Any ones Bhakthi to our Maha Periyava will never go waste. This incident has happened in my grand fathers life. He lost his father when he was about 9 years old.His relatives only helped him to done Upanayanam for him.He is doing his fathers Shradham from that very tender age itself. He was working as a road maistry at Chengam Thiruvannamalai area about eighty years back.

At that time Our Maha Periyava Visited a place called Kanchi there. There is no brahmin in that particular place. Suddenly his man rushed to my thatha and told him “Sankaracharya swamigal has come to Kanchi, you may please come there immediately ”.Immediately my father,Thatha and Patti reached that place and perform Sastanga Namaskarams. Then he asked my grand father whether he has the knowledge of Rudram Chamakam etc. My grand father told him “I am not aware of those things since my father died when i am nine years old. From that day onwards i am regular in the Pitru karya’s and daily performing Sandhya Vandhan’ Since i am working as a Road Maistry ,i have no chance to study all those things”.

Then Swamigal told my Grand father to learn Vishnu Sahasranama. My grand father study Vishnu Sahasranama writing it in so many note books many number of times and has become an expert chanter of Vishnu Sahasranamam. We saw the greatness of Vishnu Sahasranama in his death bed.

He used to say ” Periyava asked me to chant Vishnu Sahasranama”. Till his last day he was very much regular in that. Since my Grand father was an organiser of Divya Nama Sangeerthanam in our area,ie at Perumbavoor a place very near to the Birth Place of Adi Sankara Bhagavath Padal -Kalady, is very much known as BhajanaPatta ( T.S.Anantha Krishna Iyer). He died Chanting Vishnu Sahasranama only.

You can feel and understand the Greatness of Our Paramacharyal’s Vision here.

Hara Hara Sankara Jaya Jaya Sankara. Kanchi Sankara Kama Koti Sankara.

  3. For people who feel guilty that they are unable to do their nitya karmas and other anushtanams properly then best for them is to start first with chanting of Sri Vishnu Sahasranma and then rest of the things will start falling in place and also I have found that were families as a whole chant Vishnu Sahasranama together , there is lot of harmony in that family . Kanchi Mahaswamigal always asked people Chant Vishnu Sahasranama and even during the time of Samadhi people were chanting Vishnu Sahasranama .

  7. I will narrate an incident I witnessed personally. It was February,1972, a day or so before Shivaratri.. Mahaperiyava was staying at Shivastanam. I was then working in Nagpur but had gone to have darshan of Mahaperiyava, with a friend of mine from Madras. We were about 20-25 persons standing there before him. He talked to each one of us by turn, enquiring about our purvikam. After some time a group of villagers suddenly entered there amid some noise. There had been some Hindu-Muslim disturbances in and around Arni those days and the villagers started talking about them. Mahaperiyava listened closely and started questioning the villagers – he asked them whether they had been personally affected, whether any one of them was actually hurt, whether they were beaten or pelted with stones, whether their dwellings were damaged, whether any weapons or sticks were used, who started it all and how, whether they resorted to violence first or merely responded in kind, etc.. This went on for about half an hour. Suddenly Mahaperiyava fell silent. After about 5 minutes, he asked that Vishnu Sahasranamam be recited. He closed his eyes, and placed on his head some garland of Tulsi leaves which was lying before him. The Sastrigals who were there started the recital, which was joined in by others in the group who knew. Some ladies also joined in the recital , but this was objected to by the Pandits, saying ladies should not join. ( To this day, I am not able to understand this.) Of course the ladies did not care, and the recitation went on. Mahaperiyava did not open his eyes till some time after conclusion of the recitation. He slowly opened his eyes, looked around the people in front and blessed them He asked the villagers not to be afraid. To me it appeared that Mahaperiyaval’s message that day was that group recital of Vishnu Sahasranama was an effective remedy for or protection against social disturbances.

However much one may read or listen, one will not have full faith unless one has personal experience. My mother who was 89 had been ill for some time and by the first week of Sept.2011, her condition was bad. All communication had stopped and one day it appeared she was rather suffering too much. We started playing the Vishnu Sahasranama C.D. recorded by Sri Vidyabhushana. Gradually signs of distress left , breathing eased,, her face became serene.. It did not change till the end. She passed away an hour later. BUT THE POINT IS SHE HAD BEEN ALMOST TOTALLY DEAF. That is the power of Vishnu Sahasranama for you! .

  8. I have started learning Rudram from my father. When I was in Milan on an official trip, I was watching the videos of Periavaa devotees. While watching them, I was getting more emotional and at one point of time, thoughts drove me that I should learn Rudram and chant during every Pradosham. I took this as periavva’s instruction and after coming from Milan, I requested my father to teach me Rudram. I was learning few verses every week end and it was on the Pradosham I completed the Rudram and chamakam. I pray to periavaa that I should keep reading this often and daily. On the 24th of December 2013 I had been to chennai airport to pick up my friend. It was around midnight and I was driving the car with my friend seated beside me. All of a sudden I got an instruction to apply the break and without hesitation I applied the break. There wasn’t even a split second left before a Tempo traveller passed across me in perpendicular direction. Considering the speed of the tempo traveller and direction it would have rammed on the driver’s door. Even before I could realise what had happened, the tempo traveller had gone out of sight. Surprisingly, I was calm and comfortable. I was sure it was periavaa who asked me to apply the break. I slowly drove the vehicle, came home and told my wife and went to sleep. The same early morning I had a dream. I am standing in a small praharam and before me is maha periavaa offering his prayers to Ambal. He then looked at me and said “Naan unnai parthukanumnu aval solra. Unnai naan eppadi vida mudiyum. ennoda vaa”….

  11. I have been chanting the vishnu sahasranama for about 6 to 7 months now, after i read in one of the blogs here. I never thought I could, but it is happening now. I have seen my grandfather do this every day in the evening for about so many decaded and so also my father, and he still does it. Am not as regular as they, but atleast i get to do 4 to 5 days a week and i hope with his grace it becomes a daily practise. The great thing about all this is, that I had wanted to meet Vedapuri mama at least once in life and by perivaa’s grace, it happened today. I with my wife met Vedapuri mama, heard him talk for almost an hour of his experience and perivaa…..so many emotional moments when he spoke……to me personally it is like……life’s mission accomplished having met vedapuri mama…

  12. Greatly thrilled! Maha Periyava calls this Thatha and gives Upadesam to him to chant VishNu SahasraNaamam. It shows how much affection He showed to the person who did Pithru Karyam regularly, though he did not know Vedic Sukhthaas, To Dharmaputhra’s query as to by which easy means one can reach God, Bhishmaachaarya says that chanting Bhagavan’s Naama is the simplest way! That is why Maha Periyava gives this simple remedy. Often He used to make devotees chant VishNu Sahasranaamam not once, but twice in succession. Jaya Jaya Shankara, Hara Hara Shankara! Hari Om!
