Call for A(u)ction – 51 Pure Umbalacheri Native Breed lives at stake on Feb. 18, 2021

The task which ought to be done collectively by the entire society of people is to make it happen that not a single cow should go the slaughter house and should be fed to the full stomach and be made to live in clean sheds under hygienic conditions. For this, shelters for unyielding cows should be set up at many places and be maintained well by the people. The unyielding cows, whose owners are unwilling to feed them any longer and are sending them to the slaughter houses, should be bought and protected in these shelters. If some owners are uncultured, they might bargain a rate for the skin and meat of the cows. We should patiently explain the Punyam and compassion involved in this work and should coax them to sell the cows for a fair price or for free. Many owners might be really poor and suffering and it’s certainly not fair to expect them to part with the cows for free of cost. Whatever be the situation, not a single cow should be left to be sent to the slaughter house just because it involves paying a higher price. If such a thought as “buying the cows, setting up shelters and feeding them – all these are extremely expensive and moreover maintaining the old cows are strenuous and painstaking” crops up, the answer should be that considering the importance of this duty both money and physical strain are trivial and unimportant. – Jagadguru Chandrasekharendra Saraswathy Swamigal

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara – Last week, we received information that 51 native breed Umbalacheri Gho Mathas/Rishabams are going to be auctioned off at Korukkai Govt. farm on Thursday, Feb 18th. Below is the auction notice.

This set of 51 consists of –
– 6 Cows that no longer produce milk
– 12 female calves
– 25 young bulls
– 8 male calves

Clearly, Gho Mathas and Rishabams only seem to have two choices –
– die now as calves, or
– work for us until they are milked dry or until every ounce of energy has been extracted from them, and then die

Can we imagine living with these two choices? These aren’t even choices; both end in death by slaughter.

Umbalacheri native breed cows are the pride of Tanjore delta region and they have so much significance including their invaluable cow dung and urine that has proven to cure several diseases and is used extensively in the making of Gho Products. All these seems to be falling only in the deaf ears of govt. officials.

We have initiated some legal proceedings to see if we can stay this auction by filing a writ. That work is still in progress and we may or may not hear a judgement on it before the auction on Thursday. Considering the weekend, we really only have 3 days to hear back on this. We are praying to periyavA to make this happen but it doesn’t look too promising at this time.

But keeping the welfare of the cows in mind, we have to assume the worst and prepare to attend the auction and rescue these cows. Since we don’t have much time, I request you all to treat this Kainkaryam with high urgency and contribute whatever you can towards this rescue.  The govt. farm issues receipt for every cow that is purchased and I will post them in the blog if we manage to buy them.

Based on my previous experience an average cost cost will be Rs. 10k. If we can mobilize around Rs. 5 lakhs we can save all these innocent souls.

  2. Dear Sai, in response to my email, one Ramalingam an official at Korukkai Cattle Department who is one of the officials involved in the auction process, talked to me ( his mobile number is 63807 10661). He assured me that if the auction takes place, it would be as per norms and they will get good police protection at the Rank of an SI. Only those with demand drafts will be allowed inside. The department will encourage and help Goshalas. May Maha Periavah bless your team with success.

    • Sir,

The auction if happens (looks most likely to happen as our writ seems to go nowhere) will be fair but in favour of the cattle farm. However if you look at it deeply it is totally unfair. Last time, the local politicians came and hiked the price twice/thrice than the base price and purchased all the cows and then started negotiating with us to buy the cows. We had a lot of back and forth where in we finally got the price which resulted in monetary loss for them.

While the auction may seem fair because the govt. farm is making money what happened last time was not fair by any means. It is like buying cinema ticket and selling it at exorbitant prices in black. In my experience, the locals and politicians won’t let us buy all the 51 cows as there is a lot of ego in play as well. Let’s pray to Periyava to show us a way. Sri Periyava Thiruvadi Sharanam. Rama Rama

  3. Dear Sir

I have sent mails to Regional Joint Director of animal Husbandry and the District Collector Tiruvarur district Tiruvarur to stop the auction and handover the cows to Goshalas. I have also sent mail to SP Tiruvarur district to give adequate police protection at the auction site, in case the auction actually takes place. L.srinivasan

  4. dear sir, When there is ban on Cow Slaughter already exists, how a Government department can call for auction for the disposal of Cows? Obviously the takers will be only slaughter house persons. So the government is acting against Government decision. Can it not be put in a twitter account addressed to Supreme court and get injunction of such activities. There should be an order that all such cattle should be given to gosalas directly instead of auctioning as they are unable to maintain. Seeking your views. I am not a legal expert, but a common thinking arose in my mind.

    • Namaskaram Sir,

I’m not a legal expert either and at loss of words as to how these are allowed to happen. The writ we have filed is based on what you have mentioned. Not sure what the outcome will be. Thank you. Rama Rama

  5. With God’s race will remit today. May God be with all of you and the cows. May every one contribute for this noble endeavour and stop the inhuman act.
