திதிகளெல்லாம் ஒன்றுகூடி
தம்பெருமை பேசியதாம்!
பதியிதனில் எம்இணைதான்
யாரென்று பீற்றியதாம்!
பதிமூன்று திதிகளங்கே
பொலிவுடனே நடைபோட
பாவம் மூன்று திதிமட்டும்
பரிதவித்து நின்றதாம்!
முதல்திதியாம் ப்ரதமையதோ
முகச்சோபை இழந்ததாம்!
அதைப்போன்றே அட்டமியும்
அகம்வருந்தி இருந்ததாம்!
நற்றுணையாய் ஒருவரின்றி
நவமி நலிந்திருந்ததாம்!
ஒற்றுமையாய் மற்றதிதிகள்
ஒதுக்க வெம்பியிருந்ததாம்!
இகழ்ச்சியோடு நின்ற மூன்றும்
இறையை வேண்டித் தொழுததாம்!
எமக்கு மட்டும் இந்தநிலை
ஏனென்று அழுததாம்!
கருணையோடு வந்த கடவுள்
கலங்காதீர் என்றனன்!
பெருமைபடுத்தி விடுகிறேன்
பாருமெனப் பகர்ந்தனன்!
நெஞ்சமெல்லாம் நொந்திருந்த
நவமிதனை நயந்தவன்
வஞ்சமில்லா ராமனாக

தஞ்சமான அட்டமிக்குத்

தான்மட்டும் தனியாகி

ஏன்உன்னை விடுவேன்நான்

ஏனிந்தப் பொறாமையோ?
அவர்களையும் உய்க்கவந்தார்
அவனியிலே எம்பெருமான்!
வளர்பிறையோ தேய்பிறையோ
ராகுகேதுவுக்கு ஆனந்தம்தான்!
வாடாமல்லியாம் சுவாமிநாதன்
உலகுக்கே ஆனந்தம்தானே?
சங்கரனின் அவதாரமாம்
சுவாமிநாதன் அருள்வடிவம்
சதாசிவம் கண்டதில்லையே
சுவாமிநாதனைக் கண்டோமே!
என்னுயிரில் கலந்தவராம்
ஏறுமயில் வாகனவண்
பன்னுயிர்க்கும் பாவலனாம்
பரந்தாமன் சுவாமிநாதன்!
அனுஷத்தில் அவதரித்த
அளவிடங்கா அருள்நாதன்
தரணியிலே வலம்வந்தாரே
தவவொளி மின்னிடவே!

Though verbatim translation may be a far cry – but not an impossible task–at least an explanation of this excellent poem can be attempted. I will try.
In order to understand the meaning, one should understand the Hindu calendar. The days, which are called ” Thithi” (तिथिः in Samskrutam) are named Pournami, Pratthama, Dvitheeya, Thrutheeya…,…and go up to Amavasya and continue as Prathama….upto Chathurdashi.
We will now go to the poem.
All the Thithis got together and started boasting themselves “Who can equal us in this world?”.
While thirteen Thithis walked with their heads held high, the remaining three were crestfallen.
The Prathama’s face lost its radiance, and the other two–Ashtami and Navami— were sadness personified. Navami was left companionless by the other thirteen.
The discarded three got together and prayed to God “Oh good God! Why this lowly status for us alone?”– they cried.
The everloving God apoeared and consoled them, ” Do not cry! I will answer your prayers”.
He honoured Navami by incarnating as Sri Rama on Navami Thithi. To honour Ashtami, He was born as “Ayarpadi Krishnan” on Ashtami Thithi.
Prathama Thithi was left stranded.”I will not let you down” declared the Lord.
On KrishnaPaksha Prathama Thithi, He came down to this earth as “Swaminathan”.
As if that was not enough, He made Swaminathan a Sanyasin. And on Shuklapaksha Prathama the Sanyasin was made Jagadguru.
What an honour to Prathama Thithi for giving us the Jagadguru on that day!
