Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara – Unfortunately the above golden quote (Gho Dhanam) told by our Sasatras and Sri Periyava is on wane these days. Per our scriptures, for our Athma Kshemam, one should do at-least 10 Gho Dhanams in our life time but many of us do not even do once. Regrettably, in my personal experiences, many of the Vadhyar’s also do not emphasize this fact. Apart from many occasions, it is extremely important to do Gho Dhanam immediately after an individual passes away as well on the 12th day (Sapindikarana). Even if one misses we should do it at-least before the first year ceremonial rites (dhivasam) of the deceased. Nowadays even the affordable one’s do not pay heed to this and use coconut (substitute) or lotus flower (substitute for substitute) and complete the ceremony haphazardly. Sastras very clearly specifies that one should opt for substitute(s) only in unavoidable circumstances which otherwise will have its own consequences. One may argue it costs a bit to buy a cow/calf and it is tough to figure logistics surrounding Gho Dhanam. I have been giving it a thought about this for a while and with help of my trustworthy Ghosala contacts simplified this process. The objective of this kainkaryam is to start helping needy devotees who really want to do Gho Dhanam. I also want to make this process as simple and as effortless as possible.

As you all aware, Mahalaya Paksham or Pithru Paksham has started yesterday (13th Sept) and concludes on Saturday, 28. In many a cases, due to various situations we may not have done Gho Dhanam for our ancestors. The next couple of weeks is a rare opportunity to perform this noble act for our ancestors and also for ourselves. This is a Maha Punniya Kalam and even if one does not want to do it for their Pithrus they should consider doing it for themselves.

I repeat, money is not a criteria here. If one wants to do Gho Dhanam please let me know by writing to donations@kgpfoundation.org and I will start making arrangements. You can either come to Gosala and do Gho Dhanam (which is preferable) or I can arrange for Cow/Calf to come to your home in case you cannot make it. The transportation can only arranged in Chennai and nowhere else. Let’s make this home coming really in unavoidable circumstances please.

If you can come to Gosala I can make arrangements for Vadhiyar and other logistics that it is needed for this ceremony which will last for around 30 minutes. In case the cow/calf has to come to your place you need to arrange for Vadhiyar yourself. Please pay for the cow/calf transportation charges and consider making a small contribution for cow/calf feeding to the Gosala. This contribution amount is up-to your discretion. As I mentioned, the objective of this post is to create awareness of Gho Dhanam and help ourselves and our Pithrus take advantage of this Maha Punniya Kalam by performing Gho Dhanams.

Since ‘substitute’ has been mentioned, we have gone to the extent of offering ‘substitute’ to this substitute and another substitute to that substitute and started to equate offering of a cow (Gho Dhanam) to krcchram and further, giving only the cost of the cow as fee (Dakshina) and gradually reducing even that fee, to a ridiculous level of saying that krcchram has been observed if only ‘kalana’ (25 paise), is given as fee. – Jagadguru Chandrasekharendra Saraswathy Swamigal
