மேல்நாடுகளில் Orphan-home (அநாதை இல்லம்) என்று தனியாக வைக்கிறார்களென்றால், நம் சாஸ்த்ரப்படி ஒவ்வொரு இல்லத்திலும் அநாதைக்கும் அதிதிக்கும் இடமுண்டு. மேல் நாட்டுக்காரர்களின் வீட்டுக்குள் அநாதைகளோ அதிதிகளோ நுழையக்கூட முடியாமல் நாய் கட்டியிருக்கும்! அவன் வாழ்க்கையோடு, ரத்தத்தோடு அதிதி ஸத்காரமும், அநாதை பராமரிப்பும் ஒட்டாமல் அவைபாட்டுக்கு மெகானிகலாக ஸ்தாபன ரீதியில் நடக்கும். (எல்லாரும் இப்படி என்று நான் சொல்லவில்லை. எந்த தேசத்திலும் உத்தமர்கள், பரோபகாரிகள், த்யாகிகள் உண்டு. அப்படியே ஸ்வயநலக்காரர்களும் உண்டு. பொதுவாகச் சொன்னேன்). மேல்நாட்டானைக் காப்பியடித்து, “அதிதி தேவோ பவ” என்ற கொள்கையைக் கொண்ட நம் தேசத்திலும் வீட்டு வாசல்களில் “நாய் ஜாக்கிரதை!” போர்டு தொங்குவதைப் பார்த்தால் வேதனையாயிருக்கிறது. “வா வா” என்று வழிப்போக்கர்களைக் கூப்பிட்டுப் படுக்க வைத்துக் கொள்ளவே ‘திண்ணை’ என்பது நம்முடைய வைதிகமான க்ருஹ சில்பத்தில் இருந்தது. இப்போது அதெல்லாம் போச்சு. இப்படியே அன்றன்றும் வைஸ்வதேவ பலியில் தெருவில் போகிற எவனோ பஞ்சமன் சாப்பிடக்கூட ஒரு பங்கு அன்னம் போடப்பட்டு வந்த இந்த தேசத்தில் இம்மாதிரி அநுஷ்டானங்களை ‘ஸூபர்ஸ்டிஷன்’ என்று தள்ளி வைத்து விட்டதும் மனஸுக்கு க்லேசமாயிருக்கிறது. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்

While in the Western world orphanages are constructed, in our country, according to the ancient sastras every household has a place for guests and orphans. In the Western homes, a guard dog will be preventing the entry of guests and orphans into the house. Hospitality and protection of orphans have been institutionalized, which happens mechanically without having any deep involvement or attachment with one’s life. I am not specifically condemning foreign countries – every country has got its own quota of noble, selfless philanthropists who are willing to sacrifice for the welfare of others. Similarly, every country has its share of selfish people. I made just a general observation. Our country used to accord a divine status to the guests. Now we have started imitating the West and the signboard – “Beware of Dogs” hangs outside our homes, a matter of great sorrow. “Thinnai” – the raised platform on either side of the entrance to the house – used to be built to accommodate weary travelers and was part of our traditional art of building construction. Now such structures have disappeared. The ‘Vaisvadeva’ ritual which was followed by the householders as per Vedic tradition ensured that even the poorest of the poor got atleast a mouthful of food to eat.
