Experiences with Maha Periyava: Deergha Ayushman Bhavah
This is an incident that relates back to several years. When Sri Maha Periyava was giving darshan, four or five Vidhwans who had come for darshan, were sitting on the floor.
During the course of His conversation (with the devotees), Periyava asked them, “When bhaktas do namaskarams to me, I bless them saying, “Narayana, Narayana”. What do you people who are samsaris say for blessing?”
We say, “Deergha Ayushman Bhavah”. That is the custom.”
“What does it mean?”
“Remain saukyam for a long time is its meaning.”
Periyava asked all the Vidwans present there, one by one. Everyone conveyed the same meaning.
Periyava remained silent for sometime. Then He said, “The meaning all of you said is a wrong one.”
The Pandits were taken aback. Every one of them was a bada bada Vidwan, and had earned the Shiromani title.
For the Samskrita Vaakyam “Deergha Ayushman Bhavah” even those with a little knowledge of Samskritam can tell the meaning. Such simple words! Yet Periyava says the meaning is wrong?
“Shall I tell it myself…..?”
The Pandits sharpened their ears.
“Of the twenty seven Yogas, one is named Ayushman. Of the eleven Karanas, one is the called the Bhava. Among the weekdays, the Saumya Vaasaram falls on a Wednesday. When all these three-on a Wednesday, the Ayushman Yoga and the Bhava Karana-occur together, that day is said to be ‘shlagya’ (auspicious). Therefore, if these three occur together, whatever good phalas would be got, I bless that you may get all those fruits…”
All the Vidwans got up together and did namaskarams to Sri Maha Periyava.
For the Vaakyam (phrase) that the four or five Shiromanis and five or six Vidya-Vachaspatis had been repeating like a kilipillai (parrot) until then, what accurate and deeper meaning had this Jnana Pillai (knowledgeable one) pointed out!

I have read this ‘ayushmaan bhava sownta’ episode, almost a decade ago.
The version was slightly different.
HH did NOT tell the Pandits that they were wrong. He Said, “can there be any other meaning?
The Pandits realised that ‘there must be some interesting meaning’.. AND requested HH, to enlighten them, with the other (hidden) meaning.
HH with his characteristic smile explained the other interpretation… as given in the article
