Important – Nithyakarma Anushtana Materials

Periyava_Japam_river_rare

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara,

For the past few weeks we saw how much emphasis Sri Periyava placed on doing our Nithyakarma Anushtanams in Deivathin Kural – Karma Margam section (On the bottom right hand side of the blog, Click Gems in the Tags section and read Deivathin Kural, chapters 22 to 28).

With the help of our Aathu Vadhiyar Adiyen has put together a list of Nithya Karma Anushtanams, an individual needs to perform daily without fail after his upananaya samskaram.  It will certainly be useful for all of us to practice Nithyakarma Anushtanams that includes Trikaala Sandhyavandanam as well. The document should be used to understand the meanings, postures, directions, etc but we need to focus on the audio files to help us learn and recite the mantras the correct way. The recording has been done slowly so it is easy for even a novice to learn and master these mantras quickly. One advise the Vadhiyaar gave is Do not rush! Do it slowly!! The document and audio content can be downloaded from Dropbox and also be listened in Youtube.

Hopefully this helps and inspires someone to take-up Nithyakarma anushtanams sincerely if they are not doing it already! A static website has been created so the contents can be accessed from there.  Link below. Periyava Thiruvadi Charanam!! Ram Ram

  1. Thank you for sharing this information. It would be great if people who have access to procedures and details for other vedas(Rig, Sama and Atharvana) also share information so that they can all be gathered together. As some people have highlighted, this should be used as a reference and not for learning purposes. All procedures need to be learnt from Guru initially.
As Sri Sai Srinivasan mentioned, there are many NO’s. We are violating most of this. I think if the spark is first initiated, then there is always hope that people will try to do less of the NO’s.

  2. Good initiative Sai & this will really help. Getting knowledge through Guru is ultimate. But, I learnt many things in the internet through Google 🙂 Then, as Sai mentioned it is all about RIGHT balance.

To those who gave feedback : Feedback are always welcome so that the resources get further fine tuned. Thankyou for your time.

  3. Sir,

First, thanks for the resources and document. If I may request, can you please provide the Owpasanam mantras text as well with procedure? It is hard to find on the net. On page 103 within the text, I just see a paragraph about it.

    Thanks
    Venkat

  4. Excellent initiaitive. thank you so much.

Ignore all negative comments above. Nit pickers with nothing good to contribute to common good except for pointing out mistakes in others. Useless fellows.

  5. It is not advisable to learn Veda mantras from audio recordings as there is no way to correct oneself. So, as pointed out in the above comment, the best way is to learn from a guru.

    • Ram Ram Shri. Chandrasekar,

There are many NO’s and one need to find the right balance. Brahmins crossing ocean is a NO, eating outside food is a NO, Learning Vedas from a book is a NO, doing Karmas, Yajnas, in Para Desam is a NO (which will not yield benefit per Deivathin Kural), doing Pithru Karyams apart from Bharatha Desam is also a big NO NO, and so does learning Vedas from a Guru over Skype/Internet. All these are happening left and right and we need to strike a balance on what we can to keep up our tradition rather than completely abandon it. As mentioned to Shri Bharath the goal of this content is to supplement Guru’s teaching but I really doubt in present world if the latter can happen consistently. Ram Ram

      • Sai is correct and practical about it in the present circumstances. Ideal procedure is nice to follow provided, Guru is available and ready to learn from. I learnt Rudhram, Chamakam, SokthAs etc. from Audio and from my brother-in–law who learnt it from a Guru, as I could not get one. When Periava said “VEdhAs should be saved, protected and nuorished ” we should find a via media to achieve the goal. In certain places, VAdhyAr is not available to do KarmAs. What can people there do?

In places like Chennai, great souls like Sarma sastrikal are conducting classes for Anushtanams and other KarmAs. Many persons attend them and learn. Ways should be found under existing conditions. If we say “Guru is not available, so I am not learning” and sit tight, we are the losers.

Let us be practical about it. Any how, it is not a sin to learn from Audio and books.

      • Narayanan Sir, my only request as mentioned in the above post is to get upadesam from a Guru atleast 3 times for any Mantra and then practice on our own. That way we are not violating Sri Periyava’s teachings. Ram Ram

  6. This is a very good initiative! However, the level of knowledge of the hapless people wanting to follow the daily rituals nowadays is quite low, they might think one size fits all, looking at this website. The procedures you have detailed are fine for a Yajur Veda adherent, but they differ considerably for Sama Vedis, for example. At the very least, you should make this clear up front to whom this procedure is applicable (as I understand putting the different procedures for different groups might not be possible for you).

As an example, the Brahma Yagnam procedure for Sama Vedis is quite different with Samams to be recited. The Tharpanams are quite short, compared to Yajur Vedis (where there is even considerable difference between the Sutras). On top, Palakkad Brahmins will not do Pitru Tharpanam in Brahma Yagnam if their parents are alive etc., etc.

Thus, there is no substitute for a living guide to learn all these nuances applicable to oneself. This website can be a supplement at best. This point has to be acknowledged prominently. (Same logic as learning Vedas from a teacher vs cd/book).

I quickly looked at that section on Brahma Yagnam : There is also a blank space of 7 minutes in the audio from minute 16 onward. Perhaps these glitches will be fixed on the next iteration.

The short point is, if Anushtanams are to done sincerely (which is the stated objective of the website and the initiative), then equally proper care *must* be devoted by the website administrator to alert people of the differences depending on their background. *ONE SIZE DOES NOT FIT ALL in the methods, only in the goal*.

Perhaps in the future iterations, 1) This point can be highlighted prominently 2) Better still, have all the different procedures compiled.

Please take this comment in the constructive spirit with which it is intended

    • Ram Ram Shri Sreedhar Bharath,

Thanks for the feedback, you are correct. In fact all these points have been mentioned in the document. Now I have taken that part out and called it out in the home page of the website, with a few other modifications.

I probably should have mentioned about why I compiled this document and audio files. Though I understand we all need to learn this from a Guru, in today’s world it is almost impossible which I found the hard way. When I had my son’s upanayanam done few years back we had a Vadhiyar come to our home (in India) who taught him Sandhya Vandanam and other Anushtanams, but he could not come both times of the day and teach all the Nithya Karma Anushtanams (Trikaala Sandhyavandam, Brahma Yajnam, Samithaa Dhaanam, Parisechanam, etc. as it would take dedicated time (around a month atleast) and effort for the Vathu to master it. I could not do it consistently either. With Vadhiyar’s other commitments it is not fair on us to expect to happen. I referred to Deivathin Kural and saw what Sri Periyava said about getting upadesam from a Guru for 3 times and then learn on your own (for Manthras). In fact I had the same Vadhiyar record all these audio so he is learning from the same Guru.

Also, I looked at the Brahma Yajnam audio, it is all good except for blank from 15th to end but nothing got missed out as everything was complete before then.

If you have procedures of other sampradaya’s please share and I will update the website accordingly so it is all in one place.

  7. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

  8. Owpasanam to do after Prathasandhya and not after madhyaanikam. Owpasanam in the evening after sayam sandhya which is not mentioned. Owpasanam only for the married and samithadaanam for those yet to marry
