ராமாநுஜரின் குருபக்தி
ராமாநுஜாசாரியார் திருக்கோட்டியூர் நம்பி என்கிற தம்முடைய ஒரு குருவின் வார்த்தையை உல்லங்கனம் பண்ணி (மீறி) எல்லா ஜனங்களுக்கும் உபதேசம் செய்தார் என்று பலர் கேட்டிருப்பீர்கள். ஆனால் அவரே இதே நம்பியிடம் எத்தனை அடக்கத்தோடு நடந்து காட்டியிருக்கிறாரென்றும் வைஷ்ணவ குரு பரம்பரா கதைகள் சொல்கின்றன. உபதேசம் தருவதற்கு முந்தித் திருகோட்டியூர் நம்பி ராமாநுஜாசாரியாரைப் பதினெட்டு தடவை ஸ்ரீரங்கத்திலிருந்து திருகோட்டியூருக்கு நடக்கப் பண்ணிவிட்டே கடைசியில் உபதேசம் கொடுத்தாராம். ராமாநுஜர் கொஞ்சம்கூட முகம் சுளிக்காமல் இப்படி நடையாக நடந்தாராம்.
ஸ்மார்த்தர்கள் ஆசார்யனுக்கு நாலு தரம் நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணுவது வழக்கம். வைஷ்ணவர்கள் ஆசார்யன் போதும் போதும் என்கிற வரையில் பண்ணிக் கொண்டேயிருப்பார்கள். ஒரு தரம் ஸ்ரீரங்கத்துக்கு வந்த திருகோட்டியூர் நம்பி ஜில்லென்று காவேரி ஜலத்திலே (அல்லது படித்துறை மண்டபமாயிருக்கலாம்) நின்று கொண்டிருந்தாராம். வெளியிலே ஆற்றங்கரை மணலோ நல்ல வெயிலில் நெருப்பாகக் கொதித்துக் கொண்டிருந்ததாம். அப்படிப்பட்ட மண்ணில் ராமாநுஜர் உடம்பு கன்றிப் போவதையும் பொருட்படுத்தாமல் நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணிக் கொண்டேயிருந்தாராம். அவருடைய குரு பக்தியை சோதனை பண்ணவேண்டும் என்று இப்படிச் செய்த நம்பி அப்புறம் மனஸ் தாங்காமல் அவரை நிறுத்தினாராம்.
RAMANUJAR’S GURU BAKTHI
Many would’ve heard that Sri Ramanujachariyar did not adhere to the words of his Guru Sri Thirukkoshtiyoor Nambi and went on to preach all the people. But there are so many Vaishnavite Guru Parampara stories which exemplify his humble behavior and great devotion shown towards his Guru. Thirukkoshtiyoor Nambi, before giving Upadesam to Ramanujar , made him to walk all the way from Srirangam to Thirukkoshtiyoor eighteen times before finally initiating him into sainthood. Ramanujar walked every time happily without making any fuss as per his Guru’s order.
Smaarthas prostrate before their Guru for four times. But Vaishnavites keep prostrating till the Guru stops them when he feels he has had enough. Once while coming to Srirangam, Thirukkoshtiyoor Nambi was standing in the cool waters of the river Cauvery (or it could be a Mantap on the banks of the river too.) But the sandy bank on the outside was as hot as fire, due to the scorching Sun. Ramanujar kept on prostrating his Guru on such a hot surface, being unmindful of the fact that his torso is turning red due to the heat. Thirukkoshtiyoor Nambi who wanted to test his disciple initially, couldn’t bear this and stopped him from doing it anymore.

Guru does not inflict pain. When a child is sick, the mother gives the child medicine which is bitter and not palatable. The child might consider it to be a punishment but the mother knows the beneficial effects of the medicine. So is Guru’s action.
What I have,heard is that while doing namaskaram so many times, one of Ramanujar’s disciples watching this couldn’t bear this and intervened and he was made to cook the prasadam for Ramanujar .
That was the time when Ramanujar was surrounded by people he couldn’t trust and the Guru wanting to ensure the safety of Ramanujar wanted to select a trust worthy person to cook food for him and this was the test.
Guru never inflicts pain on the disciple.
