Truth is one. I agree sunset time can vary but not the Makar Sankranti event.
What I am saying is not new, may scholars ( including Prof. Seshadrinatha Sastrigal ) have said this before. Time has come to call spade and spade attempt to reform such issues for the benefit and glory of Sanathana Dharma.
Water boiling at 100C can also be relative and based on room temperature. Water does boil at 100c but aren’t we concerned about the time taken to boil? (Here the panetary movements) In Chennai due to excess heat it can get to 100C at 5mins time, in Kashmir may be it takes 10mins time. So why not the same in Almanacs? Anyway I think there are different almanacs for different regions as well. We can’t completely deny or bash them off. Even tamil telugu people have small difference in their almanac. May be this is due to observations/apporximations by them. Think of this in the following way: A person in place A knows the value of square root of 2 as 1.4. In place B he knows the value of square root of 2 as 1.414. This subtle difference or approximations when applied to observing sun/moon might cause a difference (which I don’t really know). But to say diffferences cannot happen is gross.
How can two almanacs give different time to this event. Not really. Consider the following fictitious real life example. Assume you deposit Rs 100 in bank A and bank B and both the banks offer you a rate of interest of root(2) per annum. Bank A calculates root(2) as 1.4 whereas bank B calculates root(2) as 1.41. After end of one year you will receive Rs 101.4 from bank A whereas you will recieve Rs 101.41 from bank B. Why this difference? The rate of interest was same the amount deposite was same yet there is a difference. The difference occured because of approximating the value of root(2) [square root of 2]. The same is the case with almanacs. Different mathematicians/astronomers might have used different approximating values. Hence differences in time/day etc etc are bound to happen. Kindly don’t rub them off as nonsensical.
The planetary positions remain the same in the universe, only the interpretations are different. So, the truth has to be one. The Almanacs have to merge to depict the truth.
It is like saying , you follow this science book, water will boil at 100C but if one follows another book, water will boil at 90C, both can’t be right.
Mahaperiva tried to bring correction in Almanac predications, but it became too complicated and touched on the sentiments of many.
In my opinion we do not go by the exact time of Sun rise or Sun set (like Muslims to follow the seeing of the moon) but follow the almanac which takes all aspects into consideration. Hence this confusion could have been avoided at least for the sake of the UNITY of HINDUS and follow 14th as Punyakalam.
