A very small but significant explanation by Periyava on the importance of fasting in upanishads (the endpoint of all vedas).

Fasting in Upansihads
In Upanishads itself, there is a mention about observing the austerity of fasting*. In the context of saying that a brahmin observes Vedic study (Adhyayanam), Worship (Yajna), Charity (Dhana), Asceticism (Tapas), Fasting (Upavas) etc to realize his soul, observing fasting is mentioned. Fasting is described in the Upanishad called “Anasakena’’. ‘Asanam’ means, food. ‘Asa’ means, ‘to eat’. ‘Anasakena’’ means, ‘’not to be eating’. The Upanishad says that people try to realize their souls, by not eating and observing fasting.
