When our relatives leave the mortal coils, we perform their final rites at least perfunctorily. Among Hindus, except for athesits, even those who do not perform the Amavasya Tharpanam and the annual ancestral ceremony – Shraadham, do not fail to perform the final rites of a deceased person, according to their customs, a funeral or a burial.
