கீதையிலும் (அத்.17) பகவான் தானத்தில் மூன்று தினுஸு சொல்லியிருக்கிறார். ஒன்று ஸாத்விகம் – உத்தமமானது; இரண்டாவது ராஜஸம் – மத்யமமானது; மூன்றாவது தாமஸம் – அதமமானது. துளிக்கூட ப்ரதி உபகாரத்தை எதிர்பார்க்காமல், தகுந்த பாத்திரத்துக்குத் தகுந்த இடத்தில், தகுந்த காலத்தில் தருவதுதான் ‘ஸாத்விகம்’. தானம் செய்வதால் கிடைக்கிற புண்ய பலனையும், தானம் வாங்கினவன் செய்கிற ப்ரதி உபகாரத்தையும் நினைத்துக்கொண்டு, பொருளில் பற்றுப் போகாததால் உள்ளுக்குள் கொஞ்சம் கஷ்டப்பட்டுக் கொண்டே கொடுக்கிற தானம் ‘ராஜஸம்’ என்ற வகையைச் சேர்ந்தது. பாத்திரமில்லாதவர்களுக்குத் தகாத இடத்தில், தகாத காலத்தில், அவமானப் படுத்திக் கொடுப்பது ‘தாமஸம்’ இப்படி க்ருஷ்ண பரமாத்மா தானத்திலேயே distinguish (பாகுபாடு) பண்ணுகிறார். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீசந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகளின் அருள்மொழிகள்
In Srimad Bhagawad Gita (Chapter 17), Lord Sri Krishna makes a distinction between three kinds of charity. One is Saathvikam- the highest form of charity. The second is Raajasam- the second best. The third and the least effective is Thaamasam. When charity is done to the right person at the right place at the right time without expecting anything in return, it is Saathvikam. When charity is done with the expectation that something will be done in return and with reluctance at parting with the material things, it is Raajasam.
