Always Wear Turmeric Kumkum; Do Not Use Sticker Bindi’s

MS Amma
Jaya Jaya Shankara Hara Hara Shankara – The past few posts Sri Periyava spoke about the importance of men wearing Vibuthi or Thiruman and its significance. Here Sri Periyava tells how important it is for women to wear Turmeric Kumkum between their eyebrows and on top of their foreheads. It is very sad many women come with a blank forehead even whey come to temples in US (including Periyava devotees). Sri Periyava points out the Stick Bindi women wear on their foreheads may contain ‘Gelatin’ (the adhesive) which will earn us the sin of ‘Gho Hathi’ (Killing Mother Cow) and tells compulsorily to use the traditional Kumkum. Gelatin is used in other food products we use in our daily lives so it is better to check the ingredients  before we buy any product so we do NOT commit ‘Gho Hathi’ Sin. Keeping our food and life style simple, traditional is the best option to avoid this. Though this was posted over a year ago we need to look at it from a different perspective and hence this post. Please pass it as much as you can to like minded people who have faith in what Sri Periyava says. Ram Ram

Did a search on what Gelatin is about and here is a summary:

Gelatin’ is a protein/fat obtained by boiling skin, tendons, ligaments, and/or bones with water. It is usually obtained from cows or pigs. Gelatin is used in shampoos, face masks, and other cosmetics; as a thickener for fruit gelatins and puddings (such as Jell-O); in chocolates, candies, marshmallows, cakes, ice cream, and yogurts; on photographic film; and in vitamins as a coating and as capsules.

  1. There are two versions for Thilaga Dharanam. Maha Periyava advise in Tamil text and in English apology comments different. Which is the correct one for layman to follow Maha Periyava advise or the other one. When we announce such serious matter we have to be careful to notify public the very correct authenticated message and piece meal message get confused to follow.

    2) Women have to apply good tumertic kumkum in their forehead in center of the eyebrows. It is more important to also apply Turmeric kumkum at the top of the forehead (hair partition at the starting point of forehead). This is one of the places where Goddess Mahalakshmi resides. Sri Adi Sankara Bhagawath Padhar sings in Soundarya Lahari, even Goddess Ambal wears dark red kumkum like solar rays in her forehead.

  2. DHARMO RATCHATHI,RATCHATHAHA,

  3. jaya jaya sankara hara hara sankara

  4. Kindly refer to Divine Thought 149. We should not wait for someone to tie the bell on cat’s neck. It is a collective workmanship. After all, schools may ban the KumKum but who is preventing to apply marks on the forehead in the eveving or on holidays? If discipline runs in the blood of the parent, chillren can never disobey elders.

    • Very right. Yes the elders have to be disciplined to set an e.g. Alas nowadays most of the women don’t wear Manjal Kumkumam, don’t tie their hair properly. They don’t understand the significance of manjal Kumkum. Even if we tell them, they ask “So What. How does it bring any change in life” etc.
Jaya Jaya Shankara. Hara Hara Shankara.

  5. Not only in wearing on the forehead, we do most of the things without knowing their significance. Artificial plants and flowers and even “ThoraNam” and “Kolam” are freely used. Worse than all,in places like Bangalore, even Rangoli is drawn in the night time. Mahaperiyava’s photo adores every house but what will be the consequences of the wrong orimproper doings.

  7. Let me add this also, even some of ladies feel bad of me! I have noticed and still seeing that so many present generation ladies standing dubious examples to other ladies and spoiling the future generation by not wearing ‘Mangalsutram’ (Thaali), Thilak between eyebrows and above forehead, ‘Mettalu’ (or Metti), Bangles, etc. All these show the ‘Shoubhagyam’ of the ladies which are inevitable and lead to spiritual wisdom. I’m really sad and helpless seeing youngsters like this on the road and other functions.

Maha Periva has to do something! Periva padam sharanam!

  8. Only Maha Periyava can save us in these gloomy days! Girls and married Hindu women, including Brahmins, coming with hair widely spread and without tying(loose hair as it is called) and having no Kunkumam or Chaandu Pottu have become fashionable. No amount of reasoned talk by even their mothers seem to change their mindset. Let us hope they change due to life teaching them the lessons. Maha Periyava has given them the clearest indication on what is auspicious and proper. Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya Shankara!

  9. The situation seems to have worsened after Mahaperiyava spoke these words. I have observed the following:
    1. Girls studying in English medium schools/ Matriculation schools (in Tamil Nadu) are advised not to sport any religious marks on the forehead. ( Boys stopped it long ago)
    2. In an Engineering college in Chennai, where a relative was studying, the corporate executive who came as guest speaker to talk on ‘Corporate Dress Code’ told a gathering of over 400 final year engg, girl students that –
    -saree
-kumkum or other marks on the forehead
    -plaited hair
    -wearing flowers
were all religous symbols and should be avoided in the work place! Since the girls have all taken up employment, they are ‘religiously’ following this advice! Imagine the impact on young girls when it is an annual phenomenon in all colleges!
3.Even older, middle aged women now wear the plastic or other sticker to match the colour of their dress, along with plastic bands or bracelets of matching colour, instead of bangles!
    4. Most commercially available Kumkum is made of chemical stuff, not turmeric. Often, even the kumkum given in some temples as prasad are not pure, made of turmeric, but of chemicals. They cause irritation, swelling, discolouration, etc.

Youngsters growing up in this atmosphere natually feel odd to wear a saree, or wear kumkum or tilak.
Till a generation ago, we used to make items like the kajal, saandhu, etc at home. But this has been given up, along with other practices like the special oil bath on Fridays, observing vratas, etc. Where do we observe mothers combing and plaiting the hair of young girls now, except perhaps in some small towns which are yet to catch up!

One is not sure whether it is the Brahmin community which is affected more than the others, but most Brahmin girls working in offices-especially IT sector- are ultra modern. I do not think parents or elders have any control or even say. Market dictates manners!

During the years of the freedom struggle some people wondered whether the white man would quit because of satyagraha. Many things in this world regarded as not being within the realm or possibility have been shown to be possible. It is not for me to say that this is not possible; to take such a view would be contrary to our very dharma and Sathyam which I won’t go against. It is up to you to make it possible in practice or not to make it possible. All I can do is too keep reminding you the message of the dharma sastras. – Sri Kanchi Maha Periyava

      • Sir, I have no disagreement with what Mahaperiyava has orderd us to do. As you can see, I have not passed any critical comments. I have only pointed out the situation as it stands now. Only the Lord knows what the future holds.
However there is one matter which requires attention. It is the general belief that we got Independence because of our non-violent Satyagraha. This is not based on records. All the satyagraha programmes announced by Gandhi ended in failure or fiasco. The only prgramme to succeed was the Salt March by both Gandhiji and Rajaji- because it was individual. The Quit India movement annouced by Gandhiji in 1942 was violent and was crushed by the British within 6 months. When Gandhiji and other leaders came out of jail, Gandhiji was sidelined by the other congress leaders , who were impatient for power, and Gandhiji was not able to provide leadership or ideas.
Then why did we get Independence so soon?
It was mainly because of Subhas Chandra Bose and his INA. This created so much enthusiasm among Indian soldiers and navymen that navy unit in Bombay even mutinied.. It jolted the British who realised that Indian soldiers too could indulge in armed revolt- for the first time since 1857.They lost confidence in the loyalty of Indian soldiers. and decided to quit.
This was admitted by Clement Attlee himself , who was the British PM at the time of Independence. R.C.Majumdar, the doyen of nationalist historians has recorded this in his book on the freedom movement.

This is a big issue and there are other points. I can cite references for every statement made here. But that is not the main issue here, and I do not want to draw attention away from Mahaperiyava’s message, which is the main purpose of this blog.

      • Ram Ram Sir – I did not take your comments as critical but see a lot of people accepting the status quo as is, so mentioned what Sri Periyava’s thoughts on that. As you see none of the words above are mine, even the translation I got from Paramacharya FB community. In my humble opinion, we should continue to maintain our dharma as much as we can and Lord will reward us.

On Bharatham Independence, I have very regard for Shri Gandhiji and as well Shri Netaji. This is what Sri Periyava, the Trikaal Gnani’ has mentioned and what was mentioned above are not my words but Sri Periyaava’s. My opinion does not count at all here. Probably you are aware, Sri Periyava has high regard for Shri. Gandhiji and has mentioned about him in Deivathin Kural on a few topics. Ram Ram

  10. MEANINGFUL INFORMATION. ALL OF US SHOULD IMPLEMENT AT HOME WITH OUR LOVED ONES. JAYA JAYA SANKARA, HARA HARA SANKARA.

  11. Ram Ram – Sincere apologies for any typos or mistakes. Ram Ram

    Thilaga Dharanam

We are inviting all inauspicious elements these days with Poorna Kumbha (Royally). Women folks not wearing tilaks is one among them. All young girls and women with husband need to ‘Compulsorily’ wear tilaks as per our sastras. It gives radiance to our face, invites all auspicious forces if we apply it in between our eye brows, called ‘Brookudi’, per Yoga Sastras. To focus our thoughts and concentrate, the center point in between eye brows is the key where we keep our focus. Applying tilak in the right place (center point in between eye brows) will help protect and conserve all our positive energy without which it will drain off is what the intellectuals of today say as well.

Women have to apply good tumertic kumkum in their forehead in center of the eyebrows.

Unmarried women can apply Saanthu (black paste) in their forehead. It is prepared by burning the rice to black and applying it.

Buying various sticker bindis (pottu) we get from shops and wearing is COMPLETELY WRONG. The chemical or adhesive that is used to stick the bindi in our forehead skin will be substandard (not acceptable to Sastras). It may also trigger alleric reactions and may result in a skin disease. If the adhesive is made of Gelatin it will contain Cow Fat. If that is the case what is perceived as a very auspicious symbol will take us down the path of being an accomplice of doing ‘Gho Hathi’ (Killing of Mother Cow) which is a Great Sin (Mahaa Pabham)
