ஒரு நாள் மஹாபெரியவாள் காளஹஸ்தியில், சமீபத்தில் இருந்த ஒரு பழைமையான சிவன் கோவிலுக்குச் சென்றிருப்பதாகச் சொன்னார்கள். நானும் என் மனைவியும் அவர் இருந்த இடம் நாடிச் சென்றோம். மிகச் சிறிய கோவில்; வெளிப்ராகாரத்தில் புல் மண்டியிருந்தது. கர்ப்பக்ருஹத்தின் அடிப்பீடத்தில் உள்ள கருங்கல் ஓரமாக குந்தியவாறு உட்கார்ந்திருந்தார்கள். அச்சமயம் அவருடன் வெகு சிலரே இருந்தனர். அவர்களை விஜாரித்தோம்.
‘ஸ்ரீபெரியவாள் ரொம்ப நேரமாக இங்கே உட்கார்ந்திருப்பதையும், காரணம் தெரியவில்லை என்பதாகவும் சொன்னார்கள். நாங்கள் இருவரும் திகைத்து நின்றோம்!
ஸ்ரீபெரியவாள் நாங்கள் வந்ததைக் கவனித்தார். என்னை நோக்கி சமிக்ஞை செய்து அருகே அழைத்தார். அடியேன் அருகில் சென்றேன்.
ஸ்ரீபெரியவாள் தன் கையில் உள்ள தண்டத்தால் கருங்கல் பீடத்தைக் காண்பித்து”இது உனக்குப் படிக்க வருமா?” என்று கேட்டார்.
நான் அந்தக் கல்வெட்டு எழுத்துகளைக் கூர்ந்து பார்த்து”எனக்குப் படிக்கத் தெரியவில்லை” என்றேன்.
ஸ்ரீபெரியவாள் ”நான் சொலேன் கேளு ஹரி:ஓம் என்று ஆரம்பித்து தொடர்ந்து வாசித்துக் காண்பித்தார். உடனே எழுந்து நடக்க ஆரம்பித்தார்.
மடத்திற்கு சென்ரவுடன் அம்மாவிடம் இது பற்றிக் கேட்டோம்.
அம்மா சொன்னாள்:- சில மாதங்களுக்குமுன், உங்கள் அகத்திற்கு கும்பகோணத்திலிருந்து வந்த ஒரு சுமங்கலி மாமி காமாக்ஷி அம்மனை உங்கள் அகத்து விளக்கில் ஆவாஹனம் செய்து, அம்பாளின் பீஜாக்ஷரங்களை உபதேசம் செய்தாள் அல்லவா? அவள் வாக்குப் படி நீயும் ஆவஹனாதிகள் செய்து பூஜை செய்து வந்தாய் என்றாயே? அவள் வாக்குப்படி பெரிய ஞானிகளின் உபதேசம் கிடைக்கும் என்றாளல்லவா? அதுதான் உன் அகத்துக்காரருக்கு மஹாபெரியவா மந்த்ரோபதேசம் செய்திருக்கிறார்! என்று தோன்றுகிறது என்றாள் அம்மா.
ஒரு வைஷ்ணவருக்கு அத்வைத குருவான தான் உபதேசம் செய்து அதனை நீபெற்றுக்கொள்ளக்கூடாது என்ற மரபை மீறக்கூடாது என்பதற்காக, கல்வெட்டைப் படித்துக் காண்பிக்கும் பாவனையில் ஒரு மஹாமந்த்ரத்தை ஒரு பரம பக்தனுக்கு உபதேசம் செய்திருக்கிறார்!
எவ்வள்வு பொருள் பொதிந்த ,யுக்திக்கு உகந்த , நுட்பமான தெய்வீக லீலை இது, அர்புதச் செயல் இது! இதுபோன்ற கலையெல்லாம் பெரியவாளுக்கு கைவந்த ஒன்றல்லவா?

ஒரு வைஷ்ணவன் பரம பக்தன், அவனுடைய விசித்டாத்வைத மரபை மீறாமல் தன்னிடம் உபதேசம் செய்த உக்தி பெரியவா தவிர யாருக்காவது உதிக்குமா? அவரவர் சம்பிரதாயத்தை, மத சம்பிராயத்தை எதையுமே மீறாமல் நமக்கு வழிகாட்டியாகத் திகழ்ந்த மாபெரும் குரு! இந்த நூற்றாண்டில் அவருடன் அவர் மூச்சுக் காற்றை சுவாசித்து, அவர் காலடி வழியில் நடக்க நாம் மிகக் கொடுத்து வைத்திருக்கிறோம். அவர் வழியே நாமும் நம் சம்பிரதாயத்தை மீறாமல் நடந்து அவர் புகழைக் காக்க வேண்டுவது நம் மாபெரும் கடமை! நெல்லிக்குப்பம் தம்பதியினரின் அனுபவம் எல்லை இல்லாதது. அவர்கள் மாபெருந்தவம் செய்திருக்க வேண்டும்! அதன் பலனை அவர்கள் இந்த ஜன்மத்தில் பலவாறாக அனுபவித்திருக்கிறார்கள். இந்த மாதிரி பிறவிகளுக்கு மறு பிறவி என்பதே இருக்காது.

English translation
VaishNavanukku Advaitha Guru Mantropadesham
One day, I learnt that Periyava had gone to an extremely old Sivan temple near KaLahasthi. My wife and I went to that temple. It was a very small temple. There was a mound of grass in the outer corridor. HE was sitting crouched near a black stone at the base of the sanctum sanctorum. There were very few Sippandhis nearby and we spoke to them.
They said, “Periyava has been sitting here like this for a very long time. We don’t know why.” Both of us were taken aback !
Periyava noticed that we had arrived. HE signaled for us to come forward. I went forward.
Shri Periyava indicated the black stone with His Dhandam and asked me, “Can you read this ?”
I observed the engravings keenly and said, “I’m unable to read it”
Periyava said, “I will read it out for you, listen”. HE started with ‘Hari: Om’ and read it out entirely for us. Immediately after, He got up and started to walk away.
After going back to the Matam, I related all this to Amma.
Amma said, “A few months back, a Sumangali Mami from KumbakoNam invoked Kamakshi Amman into the lamp (ViLakku) in your house and did an Updadesam on AmbaL’s ‘BeejaksharangaL’, right? You also said you did some Pujas as per her instructions, right ? She said you will get Updadesam from a great Gnani, right ? That’s what happened when MahaPeriyava did Mantropadesham to your husband. That is what it looks like to me.
Because as per rules, an Advaitha Guru like Himself should not do Mantropadesham to a VaishNavaite. He has resorted to this ruse of reading out to His devotee from the stone inscription and thus indirectly did Mantropadesham !”
How full of meaning His gesture was ! How intelligently it was done ! How delicately it was handled ! Such a wonderful deed ! But for Periyava, all this was normal !

Who else other than Periyava can think of this way to do Upadesham to a VaishNava devotee of His, without breaking his Vishishtadwaitha rules. HE was a great Guru who did Upadesham to people without transgressing the rules of their own individual religions or castes and thus was a torchbearer to all of us. In this century, we are all blessed to breathe in the same air as He did and walk in His footsteps. It is our bounden duty to do as He did, follow studiously the rules laid down in our respective cultures and traditions and thus uphold His values. There is no end to the experiences of the Nellikuppam couple. They must really have done a lot of penance ! They have experienced the fruits of all that penance in this life. There is no rebirth for such beings.
