Some background about this temple.
This is one of the many temples that were very close to Perivaa’s heart. Perivaa wished to do the kumbabishekam of 4 important Siva Kshetrams in Tanjore district and this is one of them. Periva, when referring to this village of thirukodikaval used to say that “even the grass leaves in this village can sing”. It seems that Smt. Padma Subramaniam, based on Periva’s advise used the work of art in this temple as part of her Ph.D studies….
There are many music doyens from Thirukodikaval……Violin maestro Krishna Iyer referred as Thirukodikaval Krishna Iyer, Sri Ramaiyar, Sri Narayanaswami Iyer, Sri Kalyanam Iyer, Sri Srinivasa Iyer (the last 3 more closely referred and associated with the village of Semmangudi) etc…

Dates back to more than 2000 years. Sembian Madhhevi is supposed to have done the first thiruppani with black granite rocks. This temple is one of the five famous “Kaa”s.. – Thiruvaanaikaa, Thirunellikaa…, thirukolaka…thirukarukkaa… are the other 4.
Theertham in this temple – supposed to have originated from the horns of the Nandi in the temple.
Sri Baskararayar is supposed to have written the Bhashyam for Lalitha Sahasranamam in this temple and the slokams approved by Ambal herself in this temple.
This temple is going through renovation and is due for kumbabishekam in Feb 16-17, 2014 after a gap of 12 years. For more information.
