”சந்தேக நிவர்த்தி” காஞ்சி மடம் என்றும் போல் ஜேஜே என்று கூட்டம் பொங்கி வழிய இருக்கும் நாள் அது. பெரியவா உள்ளே இருக்கா. இன்று மவுனம் இல்லை. அவாளை தரிசிக்க அவாளுடைய ஒன்று இரண்டு வார்த்தைகள் நமது காதில் விழ கொடுத்து வைத்திருக்கோமா . அவாள் திருஷ்டி நம் மீது விழாதா? ஜன்ம சாபல்யம் அடையுமே!
நிறைய ஜனங்கள் இருந்தாலும் சப்தம் அதிகம் இல்லை. அவ்வளவு மரியாதை. பய பக்தி மஹா பெரியவாளிடம். அவரை சூழ்ந்திருந்த ஒரு கூட்டத்தில் நடந்தது இது.
ஒரு இளைஞன். பிரமச்சாரி. பொன்னிற மேனி. பட்டை பட்டையாக விபுதி, கழுத்தில் ருத்ராக்ஷம். தட்டிசித்து வேஷ்டினான். ஒத்தைப் பூணல் ஆசாமி. தலையில் பின்னால் சிறு சிண்டு (சிகை) கிராப்புக்கு இடையே காற்றில் ஆடுகிறது. கொஞ்சம் இடைவெளி கிடைத்ததும் கையிலிருந்த தட்டில் புஷ்பம், பழம், கல்கண்டு, திராட்சை முந்திரி, வில்வ மாலை எல்லாம் எதிரே வைத்துவிட்டு அந்த ஞானப்பழத்தின் முன் நிற்கிறான்.கண்களில் பரவசம். தடால் என்று கீழே விழுகிறான். ஜெய ஜெய சங்கரா என்று நாபியிலிருந்து பக்தி பரவசம். தெய்வம் ஒரு க்ஷணம் கடைக்கண் பார்வையை அவன் மேல் அள்ளி வீசியது. கெட்டியான மூக்குக் கண்ணாடி வழியாக காந்த ஒளி அவனை விழுங்கியது. எங்கோ ஒரு எண்ணக்கதிர் உள்ளே வழக்கம்போல் அந்த தெய்வத்துக்குள் எழுந்தது. நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணிய அவனுக்கு தெய்வத்தின் ஹஸ்தம் மெதுவாக ஆசி வழங்கி அவனை நோக்கியது.
”நீ குளித்தலை சங்கரன் தானே? சவுக்கியமா இருக்கியா? ”
”ஆமாம் பெரியவா எல்லாம் உங்க ஆசிர்வாதம்”
”இப்போ உனக்கு என்ன வயசாறது?”
”முப்பது பெரியவா””
ஒரு சிறு புன்முறுவல் அனைவரையும் மயக்க, ”அப்போ கல்யாணம் கில்யாணம் உத்தேசம் இல்லை. இப்படியே ப்ரம்மச்சாரியாவே இருந்துடலாம்னு எண்ணமோ ?”
”அப்படித்தான் பெரியவா”
”இரு யார் வேணாம்னா. இப்போ எதுக்கு வந்திருக்கே?” காரணமில்லாமல் வரமாட்டியே?”
மீண்டும் மோகன புன்னகை. தலை அசைத்து அருகில் எல்லோரையும் பார்க்கிறார்.
சங்கரன் நெளிகிறான். மென்று விழுங்கிக் கொண்டே ” ஒரு சந்தேகம் பெரியவா”
”’ஒ அதானே பார்த்தேன். என்ன சந்தேகம் பெரிசா உனக்கு, சொல்லு?”
”மந்திர ஜபத்தைப் பத்தி……..” ”ம்ம் நீ எதாவது மந்திர ஜபம் பண்றதுண்டா?
”ஆமாம் பெரியவா””
”யார் உனக்கு குரு?”
”மைசூர் யஞ நாராயண கனபாடிகள்”
”அடடா, அவரா. ரொம்ப விஷய ஞானி ஆச்சே அவர். என்ன மந்த்ரம் உபதேசம் பண்ணினார் நோக்கு? இரு, கொஞ்சம் இரு. அந்த மந்த்ரம் எல்லாம் நீ சொல்லப்படாது. அது ரகசியமாகவே இருக்கணும். எந்த தேவதை மேலேன்னு மட்டும் சொன்னா போறும் ”
”ஹனுமத் உபாசனா மூல மந்த்ரம் பெரியவா””
”அட. அது சரி , அதுலே உனக்கு என்ன சந்தேகம் வந்துடுத்து?”
”வந்து.. வந்து.. ஏழு வருஷமா அவா உபதேசம் பண்ணினதிலேருந்து விடாம மந்திர ஜபம் பண்ணிண்டு வரேன். அப்படியும் எனக்கு ஒன்னும் வித்யாசமா எதுவும் தெரியலையே.. ன்னு………””
”’சங்கரா…வித்யாசமா தெர்யல்லேன்னு எதை சொல்றே?”
”பெரியவா, மந்திர ஜபம் பண்றதாலே எதுவும் சித்தி அடைஞ்சதா எனக்கு படலையே’ அவன் குரலில் சோகம் இருந்ததை தெய்வம் கவனித்தது.
இளஞ்சிரிப்புடன் தெய்வத்தின் குரல் சொல்லியது. ”தெரிஞ்சிண்டு என்ன பண்ணணும்? மந்திர ஜபத்தை ஆத்மார்த்தமா பண்றியா எதாவது ஒரு காம்யார்த்தமா பண்றியா?”
”இல்லை, இல்லை, பெரியவா. ஆத்மார்த்தமா தான்” . எனக்கு நான் பண்ற மந்த்ர ஜபத்தாலே எதாவது சித்தி கிடைச்சிருக்கா? மந்திர தேவதையோட அருள் வந்து சேர்ந்திருக்கா? எவ்வளவு தூரம் நான் முன்னேறியிருக்கேன்? என்று புரியலே. கண்களில் நீர் அருவியாக கொட்ட சங்கரனின் நாக்கு தழு தழுத்தது.
அவன் மேல் பரிவுடன் மஹா பெரியவா இதமாக சொன்னார்: ” சங்கரா, ஜபம் பண்றவனுக்கு தான் மந்திர சித்தி தனக்கு கிடைச்சிருக்கா என்று உணரமுடியும். நேரம் காலம் வரும்போது தானே அனுபவத்திலே இது தெரிய வரும்” குரலில் வாத்சல்யம் இழையோடியது.
சங்கரன் தூள் தூளாக உடைந்து போனான். கதறினான்.
”இல்லை பெரியவா. ஏழு வருஷமா ஒண்ணுமே தெரியலை. விடாம பண்ணிண்டு வரேன். என்னாலே புரிஞ்சிக்க முடியலே. மனசு பேதலிக்கிறது. களைச்சு போயிடறது. நீங்க தான் எனக்கு ஏதாவது சித்தியாகி இருக்கா என்று சொல்லணும்” தலைக்கு மேல் கரம் குவித்து கண்கள் நீர் சொரிய பெரியவா முன்னாலே மீண்டும் நமஸ்கரித்தான் சங்கரன்.
சில கணங்கள் அமைதியாக ஓட பெரியவா அவனையே உற்றுப் பார்த்தார். அவன் மனம் எக்ஸ்ரே எடுக்கப்பட்டது. அவன் உள் கிடக்கை புரிந்தது. அவனுக்கு என்ன செய்யவேண்டும் என்று தெரிந்தது.
”இப்படி உக்கார். சில வருஷங்களுக்கு முன்னாலே ச்ரிங்கேறி சாரதா பீடத்துக்கு மகான் நரசிம்ம பாரதி சுவாமி பீடாதிபதியா இருந்தா. ஒருநாள் சுவாமியைப் பார்க்க ஒரு சிஷ்யன் வந்தான். வெறுமனே வரலை. உன்னை மாறியே ஒரு கேள்வியை தூக்கிண்டு வந்தான். நீ கேட்டதே தான் அவனும் அவா கிட்டே கேட்டான். ஒரு தட்டுலே நிறைய கொய்யா பழம் எதிர்க்க வைச்சுட்டு நமஸ்காரம் பண்ணிட்டு தான், சந்தேகத்தை கேட்டான். எல்லாத்தையும் கேட்டுட்டு சுவாமி என்ன சொன்னார் தெரியுமா?
”நீ பாட்டுக்கு ஜபம் பண்ணிண்டே வா. ஆத்மார்த்தமா பண்ணு. அந்த தேவதை உனக்கு சித்தி பலனை கொடுக்கவேண்டிய நேரத்திலே கொடுக்கும்”
அவன் கேட்டான் உன்னைப்போலவே.’ ‘இதுவரை பண்ணின ஜபத்துக்கு என்ன சித்தியாயிருக்குன்னு தெரியணும் .அதை எப்படி தெரிஞ்சிக்கறது என்று பாரதி சுவாமி சொல்லித்தரணும்”.
சுவாமி சிரித்தார். அவன் நகரமாட்டான் அதை தெரிஞ்சுக்காமே என்று புரிந்தது.
எனவே ”அதுக்கு ஒரு வழி இருக்கே” என்றார்.
”என்ன வழி என்று சுவாமி சொல்ல காத்திருக்கேன்” அவன் குரலில் ஆர்வம் ஆவல் தெரிந்தது.
”ஒரு பலகை மேலே நிறைய நெல் பரப்பி, உன்னுடைய வஸ்த்ரத்தைப்போர்த்தி மூடிட்டு அது மேலே உக்கார்ந்து ஜபம் பண்ணு. எப்போ அந்த நெல்லு சூட்டிலே பொரிஞ்சு பொரியாறதோ அப்போ உனக்கு சித்தியாயிருக்கிறது புரியும்.”
சிஷ்யனுக்கு சுவாமி கேலி பன்றாரோன்னு ஒரு சம்சயம். தன்னை எதாவது சொல்லி அனுப்பறதுக்காக இதை பண்ண சொல்றாரோ? அவன் மனம் நரசிம்ம பாரதி சுவாமிக்கு நன்றாக புரிந்துவிட்டது.
”ஒருக்கால் நான் உன்னை இங்கிருந்து அனுப்பறதுக்காக இதை சொன்னேன்னு உள்ளே மனசிலே ஒடறதோ? இரு. ”
சுவாமி ஒரு பலகை கொண்டு வரச்சொன்னார். நெல் அதில் பரப்பி தனது வஸ்த்ரத்தால் மூடி தானே அதன் மீது அமர்ந்து கண்களை மூடி மந்திர ஜபம் செய்தார். அனைவரும் பார்க்க, அவருள்ளே சில நொடிகளில் அக்னி பரவியது. அவர் உடல் மூலம் அக்னி வஸ்த்ரம் தாண்டி நெல்லை பொரித்தது. பட பட வென்று சப்தத்துடன் நெல் தானியங்கள் பொரிந்தன. வெள்ளை வெளேரென்று பொறி தலை தூக்கியது. சிறிது புகையும் அங்கே சூழ்ந்தது.
நரசிம்ம பாரதி சுவாமிகள் கண் திறந்து சிஷ்யனை பார்த்தார். அவன் தேம்பி தேம்பி அழுதுகொண்டு நின்றான்.
மகா பெரியவா இதை சொல்லி நிறுத்தினார்.
எதிரே சங்கரன் தேம்பி தேம்பி அழுதுகொண்டு நின்றான் கூப்பிய கரங்களுடன். ஏதோ சொல்ல வாயசைத்தான்சங்கரன்…
அவனை கையால் ஜாடை செய்து நிறுத்தி ” என்ன சங்கரா நானும் உனக்கு நரசிம்ம பாரதி ஸ்வாமிபோல் டேமான்ஸ்ட்ரெட் பண்ணனுமா?” என்று சிரித்துக்கொண்டே கேட்டார்.
”போறும் பெரியவா போறும்.’ எனக்கு புரியபண்ணிட்டேள். மந்திர சக்தி மகிமையை தெரியறது இப்போ. என் சந்தேகம் நிவர்த்தியாயிட்டுது. உங்க பூரண ஆசீர்வாதத்தோடு நான் ஊருக்கு திரும்பறேன்” மீண்டும் ஒரு நமஸ்காரம்.
அருகே இருந்த அனைவரும் இந்த சம்வாதத்தை கேட்டு பூரித்து ஸ்ரீ சரணர் முன்னே சிலையாக நின்றனர்.

Clarification of doubt
It was a day on which it was very crowded at the Kanchi Matham and it bore a festive look. Periyava is inside. HE was not on Mounam and the crowd was eager to hear a few words from Him and was hoping that His gaze would fall on them so that they could feel their life mission was accomplished.
Even though it was crowded, there wasn’t much noise. That was the devotion mixed respect that people had towards Maha Periyava. This incident took place then.
A youngster. Brahmachari. Fair in colour. He had Vibhuti smeared all over and Rudraksham beads were hanging from his neck. He was in Veshti. Poonal was single stranded (as for Brahmacharis). His Shikhai (kudumi) was swaying gently in the wind. As soon as he got the chance, he placed flowers, fruits, sugar crystals, grapes, cashews and Vilvam garland in a plate and kept it in front of Periyava. His eyes were shining with excitement and devotion. He prostrated himself in front of Periyava chanting Jaya Jaya Shankara. Periyava cast a quick glance on this young man. Powerful magnetic laser beams through thick spectacles fell upon him. Periyava gently raised His hand in blessing to the young man
“Are you not Kulithalai Shankaran ? Are you well ?”
“Yes Periyava. All due to your Ashirvadam”
“How old are you now ?”
“Thirty, Periyava”
A gentle smile played on Periyava’s lips enchanting everybody there. “So you are not planning to get married. Are you planning to remain a Brahmachari ?”
“That is right, Periyava”
“Ok, that’s fine. So now, why have you come here ? I don’t think you would have come without a reason”
A smile played on Periyava’s lips again. He regarded those standing around him.
Shankaran was clearly uncomfortable. “I have a doubt, Periyava”, he stammered.
“Hmm, I knew it. Tell me, what is the big doubt that you have”
“It is about Mantra Japam….”
“Hmm, ok, so, do you do any Mantra Japam?”
“Yes, Periyava”
“Who is your Guru?”
“Mysore Narayana GanapatigaL”
“Oh, him ? He is a scholar. What Mantra Upadesham did he do to you? No, hold on. You should not say that openly. That should remain a secret. It is enough if you tell me about which God is that Mantram ”
“Hanumath Upasana Moola Mantram, Periyava”
“Oh ok. Tell me about your doubt now”
“Yes Periyava, that is.., I mean…I’m doing the Mantra Japam for seven years now after I got my Upadesham. I feel that I’m not feeling anything different…”
“Shankara, what do you mean by saying you are not feeling anything different?”
“Periyava, I don’t feel as if I have attained even a small degree of Siddhi”. One could make out the sorrow in his voice.
Again with a smile, Periyava asked, “Why do you want to know that ? Also, are you doing the Mantra Japam for Athmartham or Kaamyartham ?”
“No, No Periyava, I’m doing it for Athmartham only. I want to know if I have attained at least a small amount of Sidhhi due to the Mantra Japam I’m doing. Have I got the grace of the God in praise of whom I’m doing the Mantra Japam ? How much have I progressed? I don’t know about any of these things.” Tears began to flow from Shankaran’s eyes and his words were slurred.
Periyava told him compassionately, “Only the person doing the Mantra Japam will know whether he has got Mantra Siddhi or not. In due course of time, he will realize it himself”
“No Periyava, I have not understood this for the past 7 years. But I’m doing it regularly. But I’m not able to
understand it. My mind is confused and it gets tired. YOU only should tell me whether I have progressed.” He
folded his hands over his head and prostrated again in front of Periyava.
A few moments passed in silence and Periyava keenly observed him in that time. His soul was x-rayed. His internal status was read and next steps were decided
“Sit down here. Shri Narasimha Bharathi was the Peethadhipathi of the Sringeri Sharada Peetham a few years back. One day a disciple came to meet Him. Like you, he also came with a question. He also asked the same question. He placed a plate full of guava fruits in front of Him and asked Him this doubt. Having listened to the question, do you know what the Swami said ?”
“You continue doing your Japam. Do it for Athmartham. The Lord will give you the fruits of the Japam at the
appropriate time”
Just like you did, he also said that he wanted to understand what has been his progress so far. Bharathi Swami should please tell me how to find that out.Swami laughed. HE knew that the young man was stubborn and would not go away until he got his answer
HE said, “There is a way to find out”
I’m eagerly waiting to understand what way is that. One could make out the eagerness and curiosity in his voice.
“Spread some paddy grains (rice with the husk cover) on a wooden plank and cover it with a piece of cloth. Sit on it and do your Japam. If the grains become ‘Pori’ due to the heat generated, you will know that you have attained Mantra Siddhi”
The disciple suspected that the Swami was making fun of him! Is He telling me all this just to get rid of me ?
Shri Narasimha Bharathi easily made out what was going on in his mind.
“Do you feel that I’m telling you all this just to get rid of you ? Wait”
The Swami asked for a wooden plan to be brought. He spread some paddy grains, covered it with His cloth, sat on it, closed His eyes and began to do Mantra Japam. As everyone was looking on, some sparks could be seen coming from the paddy grains. Heat from His body passed through the piece of cloth and began to roast the grains. With sound of popping, the grains continued to get roasted. One could see the ‘Pori’ begin to appear. There was also some smoke to be seen.
Narasimha Bharathi opened His eyes and looked at the disciple, who was sobbing by now.
Maha Periyava paused after narrating all this.In front of Him, Shankaran, with folded hands, was also sobbing. He opened his mouth to say something.
Periyava motioned for him to stop and asked with a laugh, “So Shankara, do you also want me to give you a
demonstration like Narasimha Bharathi ?”
“Enough Periyava, enough. You have made me understand. I now understand the power of Mantra Japam. My doubt is now cleared. Please allow me to return to my town with Your blessings”. He prostrated himself in front of Periyava again.
Having witnessed this incident, everybody present there stood motionless.
