Periyava in Singapore

During my India trip, I made a last minute plan to Singapore and spent 2 days there. While driving from airport to hotel, first glimpse of Mahaperiyava was seen on the name board in one of the shops- I think it was a travel agency and their name boards can be seen straight from the road. I didn’t have the time to quickly grab the phone to shoot the picture.

As many of you know there are two popular shops in Singapore – Mustafa and Hanifa Textiles. While wandering on the roads outside Hanifa textiles, we decided to hop-in as I have heard the name for a very long time. I was surprised to see this photo right at the entrance of the store by cash/billing counter.

Every time I see this photo, I get upset as this is so wrong to depict that Periyava is beyond religion. When all our Hindu friends are blindly sharing this photo in social media, how can I go and tell a Muslim friend to fix this? By doing this, there is a good chance that they might even remove that photo. So I didn’t say anything. Let Periyava bless that store also.

My good friend, Seetharaman, VA, during his flight to Singapore recently, pulled the magazine from the seat pocket and flipped few pages and was pleasantly surprised to see this photo.

Periyava is everywhere and He is always blessing all of us. All we need is His sada-smaranam!

  1. Mahaperiyava is never without his dandam. This picture is definitely fake. Mahaperiyava or any Sanyasi never touch any person. Jeers do not allow anyone to touch.. I have experienced this myself. Mahaperiyava has regard for all religions and sects but this photo is really fake and there is no doubt about that

  2. Dear Mahesh My name is VKVasudevan living in Singapore. I have seen Periyava pictures in Singapore in many places. Recently a few months back a provision shop was opened in Little India. I hv attahed the photo for your information. Periyava Saranam. Regards Vasu

  3. Why should the photo upset the “us”?
He is parabrahmam and the picture depicts the principle( as said in earlier post) that HE was not against any religion. Or is the mugam sullippu from HE is touching one of the not “us”??
Time to wake up to principles

    • Sarada – I said the same comments when Vijay TV screened Mahaperiyava episodes with complete absurdity where a Brahmin child sits on the lap of Periyava etc. Periyava does not touch anyone – period. That is how all sankaracharyas are. End of story…it’s time you read bit more about our Acharya sampradhayams…

    • Ms Sarada

Please let ‘us’ know the principles that you are talking about! There is no any முகம் சுழிப்பு from ‘us’ as you mentioned. Are you trying to instigate for something? Or expecting so from other source?

It is clear from your comments that you are immature as far as devotional matters are concerned and you have no idea whatsoever on ‘Sanyasa Dharma’. I strongly recommend you to consult some elders who are matured enough in religious matters, before throwing such comments.

      • For your information I am an Hindu and frequently do pooja. I am in need of some clarifications. What is the ultimatum of Sanyasam. Getting Renunciate from all our earthly relations and life may be called sanyasam? If so, why do we require that. What great saints achieved by that. They too had the normal death what others had but called that as mukthi or Geeva Samathi. Whats is the benefit out of these so called sacred Saints to mankind. Why of late the saints of these days can do nothing about happenings around the world. Is there is any group behind them getting benefitted monetarily. There are lot of hide and seeks about most of the saints in our hindu religion including Present Sankara Chariya. Why do they afraid of politicians those who are doing lot of injustice to the society, rather maintaining silence. Is Saint is a great myth?

      • Thiyagarajan Garu, kindly bear with me for a lengthy reply.

While I wonder if you are from a Hindu family who does ‘frequently’ Pooja (you mean daily?) who has the belief in God, how could develop a doubt on the ultimate stage of human beings in Sanatana Dharma called ‘Sanyasa’?

Sanyasa or renunciation is the ultimate sacrifice of life one can perform in devotion to God or quest for liberation. It is the sacrifice of sacrifices, in which one gives up everything, to become empty, alone, nameless and selfless. Sanyasa is necessary for attaining self-realization. Even in the preliminary stage, one should join the ascetic order, as this voluntary renunciation while yet a neophyte will qualify the aspirant for Vedantic study.

A Sanyasi lets life happen, rather than making it happen. He is a truly nonviolent person, who does not disturb the world nor get disturbed by it. The Sanyasi is free from all kinds of worldly distractions, ties and attachments.

Maha Periva said once, “A Sanyasi (ascetic) has three Dharmas.

        1. The first Dharma is that he should have no possessions; that is, he should not keep anything for himself.
        2. The second is Brahmacharya (celibacy). He should know how to control and rule over his senses.
        3. And the third Dharma is Ahimsa. He should ensure that no living being suffers because of him.

How can you understand the glory of Sanyasa while remaining in the world amidst temptations and attractions, lust and attachment, also known as Loukeeka Jivanam?

How can you know the glory of the destruction of Maya and the realization of God?

Remember that all that you see in this world and get attached to is the object of your imagination. To understand this precisely, Sanyasa and Vedanta are the only life-giving teachings. All other teachings are the mere play of words.

Look at the following references from great people on Sanyasa:

Manu says in his Smriti: “Of all Dharmas, ethics and morals, the knowledge of the Self is the highest duty of man. That is the foremost of all sciences, for through that one attains immortality. After ten births one gets the knowledge of the Veda, after a hundred births one gets good character and conduct. After a thousand births, one gets the knowledge of Yoga, but only after a crore of births does one get the love for Sanyasa. In this dharma called Nivritti, the fruit is called Final Emancipation. That knower of Brahman who gives fearlessness to all creatures and takes Sanyasa, attains the world of light and splendor. He who gives fearlessness to all creatures, attains fearlessness in the end.”

The Jabala Sruti says: “The wanderer, with renunciation, with colored cloth, clean-shaven, desiring nothing, the pure, the faultless, the holy, the beggar, becomes one with Brahman.”

Vishnu Smriti explains like this: “The householder cannot attain even by a hundred sacrifices what state the sannyasin will attain by living properly even for one night. Purified are a hundred families of his ahead, and purified are three hundred families of his of the past, in whose line even a single one takes to the path of Sanyasa. The sun trembles when he sees a sannyasin, for he feels that the sannyasin will break the Surya Mandala with his force of the soul and attain immortality.”

It is told in the Mahabharata: “Even if a person merely wears the ochre robe, he is fit to be worshipped.” Such is the glory of Sanyasa.

        Finally,

Bhagwan Sri Krishna says to Uddhava: “I am Sanyasa among all Ashramas. Only the man of renunciation with knowledge attains Brahman, and none else.”

One in Sanyasa Dharma not only completes his/her re-birth cycle but also enlightens the other fellow human beings about the ultimate goal called Mukti which is however happens to everyone according to merit.
If your question still remains on what is the use of attaining Mukti for mankind, then it clearly describes your limited knowledge lies on worldly things i.e., Loukeekam.

Sanyasis are not here to do miracles to please anybody like you or to establish their attained knowledge and cosmic powers. They are on their own goal to reach salvation while we Grahastas are seeking the knowledge to reach that path. Sanyasis never do any action that benefits himself or the ones who follow them. You must keep this in your mind. They only advise the ones who seek knowledge, they won’t command anybody, including political people. Hence there is no ‘myth’ as you mentioned in any Sanyasi’s Jeevana Vidhanam.
If you find some faulty people in the disguising of Sanyasa Dharma, the liability is with you to identify the sacred one. Blindly you believe somebody and finding fault on every Sanyasi is purely your Ajnana/ignorance.

Hope you have come out of your doubts.

Maha Periva Sharanam. Jaya Jaya Shankara….. Hara Hara Shankara.

  4. Mahesh garu I’m very sure that this photo (hugging) is fake and photoshopped. If any one of us get such photos, pl don’t share any more. The best thing we can do and may advice the sender the fact.

  5. Is this photo even real? I have not come across any photo of Periyava hugging or embracing anyone – even anyone who is a stickler for Achara anushtananams. May be you might have seen this. We can treat this is just as an attempt to record periyavaa’s appreciation for everyone following their own religious practices…Nothing more…
