நம் மதத்தின் தனி அம்சங்கள் (பகுதி 4)

அரூபமான ஒரே பரமாத்மா பல ரூபங்களில் பல தேவதைகளாக வருகிறதென்று சொல்லி, அவற்றுக்காக விக்கிரக ஆராதனைகளை ஏற்படுத்தியிருப்பது நம் மதத்தின் இன்னொரு பிரத்தியேக அம்சம். இதனால் அந்நியர்கள் நம்மைப் பல — தெய்வக் கொள்கையினர் (poly-thesis) என்கிறார்கள். இப்படிச் சொல்வது சுத்தத் தப்பு. ஒரே தெய்வத்தைப் பல ரூபத்தில் வழிபடுவது பல தெய்வங்கள் இருப்பதாக எண்ணுவதாகாது. அவ்வாறே ‘ஹிந்துக்கள் விக்கிரகம்தான் ஸ்வாமி என்று நினைத்து, விக்ரஹ ஆராதனை (ldolatry) செய்கிறார்கள்’ என்பதும் முழுப் பிசகு. விக்ரஹம் மட்டும்தான் ஸ்வாமி என்று விஷயமறிந்த ஹிந்து எவனும் நினைக்க மாட்டான். எங்குமுள்ள ஸ்வாமி இவன் மனஸை ஒருமுகப்படுத்தி ஆராதிக்க வசதியாக இந்த விக்ரஹத்தில் இருப்பதாகத்தான் நினைத்து ஆராதிக்கிறான். எந்த மதமானாலும் சின்னங்கள் (Symbol) வைத்துப் பூஜிப்பதையோ, தியானிப்பதையோ பார்க்கிறோம். அப்படி இருக்க, ஹிந்துக்களின் மூர்த்தி பூஜையை மட்டும் உருவ வழிபாடு என்பதோ, அதற்காகப் பரிகசிப்பதோ துளிக்கூட நியாயமற்றதாகும்.

ஹிந்து மதஸ்தர்கள் ரொம்பவும் பெருமைப்பட வேண்டிய அம்சம், இந்த மதம் ஒன்றுதான் தன்னை அநுசரிப்பதுதான் மூலமே ஒரு ஜீவன் உய்வு பெற முடியும் என்று ஒரு தனி உரிமை (exclusive right) கொண்டாடிக் கொள்ளாமலிருப்பதேயாகும். யார் யார் எந்தெந்த சமய மார்க்கத்தில் போனாலும் கடைசியில் ஒரே பரமாத்மாவிடம் வந்து சேருவார்கள் என்பதை ஒப்புக் கொள்ளுகிற விசால மனப்பான்மை (catholic outlook) நம் சாஸ்திரங்களிலேயே காணப்படுகிறது. இதனால்தான் பிறரை ஹிந்துவாக மத மாற்றம் (Conversion) செய்ய நம் சாஸ்திரங்கள் இடம் கொடுக்கவில்லை.

இயேசு கிறிஸ்வின் உபதேசங்களைப் பின்பற்றாதவர்களெல்லாம் நரகத்துக்குத்தான் போவார்கள். முகமதுநபி (Prophet) யின் உபதேசத்தை அநுசரிக்காதவர்களுக்கு கதி மோக்ஷம் கிடையாது என்றெல்லாம்தான் அந்தந்த மதஸ்தர்கள் சொல்கிறார்கள். அவர்களிடம் நாம் கோபப்படக்கூடாது. அவர்கள் வாஸ்தவமாகவே அப்படி நினைக்கலாம். அந்தந்த மதத்தில் இருப்பதால் தங்களுக்கு கிடைத்திருக்கிற நிறைவைப் பார்த்து, மற்றவர்களுக்கு இத்தனை நிறைவு இருக்கமுடியாது என்று நினைத்து, நல்லெண்ணத்தின் பேரிலேயே மற்றவர்களையும் தங்கள் வழிக்கு மாற்ற ஆசைப்படுகிறார்கள் என்றே வைத்துக் கொள்ளலாம். வெளிப் பார்வைக்குக் கெடுதலாக தோன்றுகிற வழிகளைக் கடைபிடித்தாவது ஒரு நல்ல லக்ஷியத்தைச் சாதிக்கலாம் என்று நினைத்தே அவர்கள் பலவிதமான முறைகளைக் கையாண்டு மற்றவர்களைத் தங்கள் மதத்துக்கு இழுக்கிறார்கள் என்று வைத்துக் கொள்ளலாம். அவர்கள் படை எடுத்து, சண்டை போட்டு, வாள் மூலம்கூட மதமாற்றத்தைச் செய்தது இப்படித்தான் என்று வைத்துக் கொள்ளலாம். இஸ்லாம் பெரும்பாலும் ஆயுத பலத்தாலேயே விஸ்தரிக்கப்பட்டது; கிறிஸ்துவ மதம் பணபலத்தால் விஸ்தரிக்கப்பட்டது என்று சொல்லுவது முண்டு. கிறிஸ்துவர்களும் படை எடுப்புக்கள் செய்தார்கள். ஆனால் மிஷனரிகளின் பரோபகாரப் பணியும் சேர்ந்து கொண்டது. பாலைவனமான அராபிய தேசத்தைச் சேர்ந்த முஸ்லீம்களுக்கு இல்லாத பணவசதி வெள்ளைக்காரர்களுக்கு இருந்தது. மிஷனரிகள் பள்ளிக்கூடம், ஆஸ்பத்திரி என்றெல்லாம் வைத்து, ஏழை எளியவர்களை அழைத்து அப்படியே அவர்களை தங்கள் மதத்தில் தள்ளிக் கொண்டார்கள்.

பலவந்தத்தையோ அல்லது உதவியைக்காட்டி வசீயப்படுத்துவதையோ நாம் ஏற்காமலிருக்கலாம். ஆனால் தங்கள் மதத்தைப் பரப்பினால் எல்லோருக்கும் க்ஷேமம் உண்டாகும் என்று அவர்கள் நிஜமாகவே நம்பியிருப்பார்கள் என்பதை நாம் சந்தேகிக்க வேண்டாம்.

ஆனால், அவர்கள் நம்பிக்கை சரிதானா? கிறிஸ்துவை, நபியைப் பின்பற்றா விட்டால் நரகந்தானா? கொஞ்சம் யோசித்துப் பார்த்தால் இந்தத் தனி பாத்தியதை (exclusive right) செல்லுபடியாகாது என்று தெரிகின்றது. ஏனென்றால் கிறிஸ்து வந்து இரண்டாயிரம் வருஷங்கள்தான் ஆகிறது. நபி பிறந்து 1400 வருஷங்கள்தான் ஆகிறது. அதற்குமுன் ஆயிரம், பதினாராயிரம், லக்ஷம் வருஷங்களாகப் பிறந்து செத்துப் போனவர்கள் எல்லோரும் என்ன ஆனார்கள்? இவர்களுடைய சித்தாந்தப்படி அவர்கள் கிறிஸ்து அல்லது நபியை தங்கள் ரக்ஷகராகக் (Saviour) கொள்ளாததால், சிருஷ்டி தோன்றிய நாளிலிருந்து அன்றுவரை வந்தவர்களெல்லாம் நரகத்துக்குத்தான் போயிருக்க வேண்டும். இப்போது இந்த மதங்களில் இருக்கிறவர்களின் முன்னோர்கள் இந்த மத ஸ்தாபகர்களின் முன்னோர்கூடத்தான் ஸ்வர்க்கம் போயிருக்க முடியாது. இவர்கள் ஹிந்துக்களைப் போலப் பல ஜன்மங்கள் உண்டு என்பதையும் ஒப்புக் கொள்ளவில்லை. அப்படி ஒப்புக் கொண்டாலாவது கிறிஸ்துவுக்கும், நபிக்கும் முற்பட்டவர்கள் மறுபடி மறுபடி பிறக்கிறபோது இந்த இரண்டு பேருக்குப் பிற்பாடும் ஜன்மா எடுத்து, இவர்களை அநுசரிக்கிற வாய்ப்பு (chance) பெற்று, கதிமோக்ஷம் அடைய வழியிருக்கிறது என்று சமாதானம் சொல்லலாம். ஆனால் இந்த மதங்களிலோ ஜீவனுக்கு ஒரே ஜன்மாதான் என்று சொல்லியிருக்கிறது. ஆதலினால், எத்தனையோ ஆயிரம், பல்லாயிரம் ஆண்டுகளாகத் தோன்றிய இத்தனை ஜன்மங்களும் கூண்டோடு நரகத்துக்குத்தான் நிரந்தர வாசமாகப் போயிருக்க வேண்டும் என்றாகிறது. தான் சிருஷ்டித்த ஜனங்களுக்கு லக்ஷோபலக்ஷம் வருஷங்கள் வழிகாட்டுகிற ஆசார்யர்களையே அனுப்பி வைக்காமல், அவர்களை மீளா நரகத்தில் போடுபவனாக ஒரு கடவுள் இருக்கிறான் என்றால், அப்படிப்பட்ட இரக்கமே இல்லாத கடவுளை எதற்காக ஆராதிக்க வேண்டும்? எதற்காக அவனை அடைய வேண்டும்? அதாவது, கடவுளை அடைவதற்காக ஏற்பட்ட மதமே வேண்டாம் என்று சொல்லி விடலாம்.

Our Religion’s Exclusive Features (Part 4)

Based on the belief that the formless Paramathma (the Supreme God) takes many forms and comes as different Devathas, our religion has created deity worships for them, which is another unique feature. Because of this foreigners call us people with Poly-thesis principles. This is completely wrong. Worshipping a single God in many forms cannot be considered as worshipping many Gods. Similarly, believing that Hindus worship idols (idolatry) thinking that God is in idols, is also a total blunder. No knowledgeable Hindu would think that idol alone is God. He worships the idol only with the belief that the all pervading God resides in the idol to facilitate a focus of mind while worshipping. We witness worshipping of symbols and meditating upon them in all religions. That being the case, it is totally unfair to call the worshipping of different forms of God by Hindus alone as idol worship and making fun of them for it.

A unique feature of Hinduism, for which every Hindu ought to be proud of, is the fact that only this religion abstains from holding an exclusive right to the theory that one can elevate oneself and attain salvation only by following this religion alone. One can witness a broad minded catholic outlook even in our Shastras themselves that anybody taking any religious way will ultimately reach the one and only Supreme God. That is why our Shastras have no room for conversion of people from other religion to our religion.

“Those who don’t follow the teachings of Jesus Christ will go only to hell; people who don’t abide by the teachings of Mohammed the Prophet will not attain salvation,” say the people belonging to these respective religions. We should not get angry with them. They might genuinely think so. Let us assume that they act out of goodwill, that after feeling the contentment they derive from their respective religions, they feel that others can never feel this in other religions and want to change their path and bring them into their own way. We can assume further that they even followed methods which appear to be evil outwardly only to achieve a noble goal (or benefit) and that was why they adopted innumerable methods and roped in others into their religion. The reason for their invasions, fighting and converting people through the use of sword could also be considered due to such thinking. Islam mostly spread through the strength of weapons; Christianity through the strength of money, it is commonly believed. Christians too undertook invasions. But the charity work of the missionaries joined hands with them. The White men possessed the strength of wealth which was not found among the Muslims who came from the desert regions of Arabia. The missionaries set up schools and hospitals and attracted the poor and the needy towards them and thereby converted them to their religion.

We may not approve of the forceful ways or attracting through charity. But we need not doubt their belief that everybody in the world would be benefited if they spread their religion.

But is their belief right? Is the result of not following Christ or Nabi Hell? If we stop to think for a moment, we find that this exclusive right won’t be valid. Because, it has been just two thousand years since Christ came here and just 1400 years since Nabi was born into this world. Then what happened to those who were born thousands and thousands, lakhs and lakhs of years before them? According to their philosophy, since they did not have Christ or Nabi as their Saviour, right from the time of creation, people who lived till their times must have gone to Hell only. The ancestors of the people who belong to these religions now, including the ancestors of the founders of these religions too, could not have gone to Heaven. They don’t accept like Hindus, that there are many births for man too. Atleast if they accept this theory, they can pacify themselves that there is a way out for people who lived before Christ and Nabi, while being born again and again, to take repeated births after Christ and Nabi came into this world and to get a chance to follow them and attain salvation. But in their religion, it is believed that Jeevan (soul) has only one birth. Therefore, we can only suppose that so many people that were born on earth thousands and thousands of years ago must have gone to eternal Damnation in total since they did not have Christ or Nabi as their Saviour. If God happens to be someone who doesn’t send Spiritual Gurus (Acharyas) to guide the lakhs and lakhs of His own creations and sends them to Eternal Hell, then why should we worship such a merciless God? Why should we attain Him? That is, we can say that there is no need for the very religion which is created for the sake of attaining God.
