Shiva Parivar

I am posting this on an auspicious guruvaram (in US) and thai Friday (in India).

Almost 10 years back Shivasri Chandrasekhara Gurukkal initiated Shiva Panchayathana puja for me in Chicago. He gave me the following dhyana slokam and gave me the meaning of the sloka also.

A sloka goes like this ::

मूले कल्पद्रुमस्य द्रुतकनकनिभं चारुपद्मासनस्थं।
वामाङ्गारूढगौरेनिबिडकुचभराभोगगाढोपगूढं।
सर्वालङ्कारकान्तम् वरपरशुमृगाभेरिहस्तम् त्रिनेत्रं
वन्दे बालेन्दुमौलिम् गजवदनगुहास्लिष्टपार्श्वम् महेशं॥

mūle kalpadrumasya drutakanakanibhaṁ cārupadmāsanasthaṁ|
vāmāṅgārūḍhagaurenibiḍakucabharābhogagāḍhopagūḍhaṁ|
sarvāalaṅkārakāntam varaparaśumṛgābherihastam trinetraṁ
vande bālendumaulim gajavadanaguhāsliṣṭapārśvam maheśaṁ||

Seated in the lotus posture under the kalpavriksha possessing a hue of running molten gold, the Gauri (Ma Parvathi) of dazzling white colour seated on His left thigh and His naughty hands hovering secretly around the buxom breast of that Uma. He who is bedecked in all ornaments, He, carrying an axe, a deer and a percussion instrument (udukku) in His hands, having three eyes, adorning His matted hair with the young nascent moon in crescent form, and embracing his two darling sons the elephant faced Ganesa and the cute Skanda the Guha on his flanks.

I prostrate in utter self supplication and surrender before that lord of Lords, Shiva…

For quite a long time, I wanted to find a photo that somewhat resembles the meaning of the slokam so that we could meditate upon Shiva-Sakthi parivar. Almost all of the photos you find will not match the meaning of the dhyana slokam.
However, couple of years back, I posted an article. In the foreword, Swamiji had written the cover photo is used to match the meaning of the same dhyana sloka. I was still not convinced with the photo for few reasons

  1. Lord Shiva should not be drawn as blue; only Lord Rama should be drawn as blue. Lord Shiva should be drawn as the golden color – the color similar to sunset (Source :: Swami Dayanandha Saraswathi / Paramarthanandha Swamigal)
  2. The dhyana slokam says he is sitting under kalpaka vruksha.
  3. He should be embracing/slightly hugging ambal with his left hand
  4. Surya and Chandra should be there on his head

If a picture has all these, then it would fit the dhyana slokam and the panchayathana puja also.

After tiring search, I reached out to our beloved Umesh for help.  I gave the sloka. meaning of gurukkal mama told and other meanings available on the web and another Lord Dakshinamurthy photo (bought from Swami Dayanandha Saraswathi Swamiji’s ashram that has the right representation of Lord Shiva). Up to this part is easy – anyone can do…Here comes the hard part….Only the blessed ones can do.. Umesh did the rest.

Umesh has been drawing mostly Periyava pictures lately although he has drawn swami pictures when he was young. Then Umesh started researching, compared several pictures, consulted his mother (she has been giving lots of inputs to him till now) and started a sketch. In his words, one and a half month was truly a great spiritual journey for him…Two days back, when he shared this photo – I was speechless…

Shiva Kudumbam 27012015

Thathroopam is an underestimated word. Once you zoom in and start to look at each swami, you would see the details and the reality he had brought out…You can’t take yours eyes off the picture. To share the details he told me – one afternoon/evening he started drawing ambal. He has Bhuvaneswari amman picture at home. He chose to draw that same ambal here too. He called his mother and she started chanting Lalitha Sahasranamam and during that time Umesh finished the whole ambal drawing – beauty of that is he did not use the eraser once!!! As per him, the whole coloring of ambal happened without even his awareness. After finished after few hours, he realized that the whole thing was done and he couldn’t believe that he did all these….He promised me to share similar experiences!

I can’t thank Umesh for what he did here…Simply amazing! Without Periyava’s grace and without Kailasanathar’s grace (are they two different or what?!) this wouldn’t have been possible. This picture is going to be printed, framed and hung on my puja room in the next few days. If I were the kings and emperors of those days, I would have given a golden kaapu for Umesh’s hands that did such a wonderful drawing! What can a poor webmaster can do? I thanked him enough and pray Periyava to bless him with all the shreyas in life!!

Umesh – Thanks a million for your time and effort in drawing this. My 10 year search ends here! This is going to live for generations at my place – for sure!

Didn’t I say that Umesh has been painting only Periyava recently? There is Periyava in the picture – find out where it is and comment! How brilliant?!
Jaya Jaya Shankara Hara Hara Shankara!

  9. BLESSED

  10. Excellent, wonderful, periyava at the right corner of the photo! Photo? No, a scene in kailasam.

  11. Ponnaar Meniyane (பொன்னார் மேனியனே!) by Sri Sundaramurthy Swamigal; there are hundreds of Thevaram songs with similar references.

  12. I have read in paramacharya’s discourses that Shiva is white colour (being brother of Saraswathi) like spatika lingam. So how is the portrayal as golden colour ?

  13. can I get Mr.Umesh contact details or Mail ID.

  14. ya I could see the paramacharya photo below the Snake. Amazing picture. Thanks for sharing.

  15. Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya Shankara! Simply Divine! Many thanks to Sri. Umesh and Sri. Mahesh for sharing with Devotees! Thanks for the Slokam also. I will chant regularly. Hara Hara Shankara, Jaya Jaya Shankara Maha Periyava ThiruvadigaLee CharaNam!

  16. Further to my above message, i have one suggestion. Since we are taking this to generation & generation, I have felt that we would have taken it to Kanchi Guru Parambaras blessings. In the past, when one of my relatives drew a picture of Ganapathy and showed it to Bala Periyava. First, he has appreciated . Later, he has said, you have forgotten to wear poonal for Ganapathy, which is very important. He has said, modify accordingly. Here, for both Ganapathy & Subramaniyar.

Here, this is also very very fantastic. No word to express.

In the “Deepam TV” everyday in the morning they are showing different Ganapathy pictures. In between one of the pictures, Ganapathy is wearing the poonal in the form of “Praseenaam” i.e. from right to left. in this connection i have wrtten to them also, but they are not changing. Common people will get confused.

Similarly, in many places (not here), they draw Ambal is in the right side of Paramathma i.e. Prameswaran. Only Jeewathma will have wife in right side.

This is only suggestion. Once, it is blessed by our Acharya, we can follow. We can get it (blessings) done through somebody, by mail also. It is our duty to understand & follow each and everything, as advised by Sri Adi Sankara & Sri. Mahaperiyava. For any further clarifications we can take the existing acharyars advise.

  17. Absolute Divine Sir! I’m speechless. But the painting speaks for itself. Blessed you are!

  19. OUR PERIYAVA IS GIVING DHARSHAN FROM THE RIGHT HAND BOTTOM CORNER JUST BELOW THE LION’S LEG WITH GREAT HUMBLENESS.WITH PERIYAVA’S GRACE MR.UMESH HAS THE TALENT TO SHOW PERIYAVA’S GREATNESS EVEN THROUGH GRASS.GOD BLESS MR.UMESH AND MR.MAHESH FOR SPENDING THEIR VALUABLE TIME SO THAT WE GET THE BLESSINGS WITHIN SECONDS AS SOON AS WE OPEN OUR COMPUTERS.

  20. Found periyava but not the abhaya hastham

  21. I read line by line with tense and finally speechless and excited to the wonderful picture. I got restless trying to look for Periyava and then with his blessing able to see him on the right corner. I have to get in printed and have in my small Swami Thattu. Thanks Mr.Umesh for such a great painting and Mr.Mahesh for sharing this with a nice explanation!! Parvathi Parameshwaram and Periyava Thiruvadi Charanam!!

  22. Periyava is seen in between mayil and simham in the grass.right corner

  24. Truly amazing and divine indeed!!!! Things line this will not be possible without Periyavaa’s Grace and Divine intervention…we are blessed to have a high res picture for us to use in our Panchayatana puj as as well. 🙂

Jaya jaya Shankara hara hara Shankara

  25. Thanks for the wonderful painting!
Periaval is shown in the serval tail and Lord Muruga is slightly drawing back His right feet to accommodate Periaval!

  26. A fantastic portrait of THE SH IVA PARIVAR by the blessed artist I too would have missed MAHA PERIYAVA if I was not told that he is present in the picture[ yes very much present in the right hand corner below Subramanian swamy]

  27. we are also ???…….”speechless”!! So Divine!
Jaya Jaya Sankara! Hara Hara Sankara!

  28. Yes, the picture is really great and the background is excellent, my sincere appreciation to the Sri. Umesh, Sri. Mahesh and Sri. Umesh’s Mother, for her help, in getting us such a grand dyana & puja picture.. I feel that Periyava is standing on the right hand side corner.

Thanks a lot.. Hara Hara Sankara, Jaya Jaya Sankara…

  29. For the past few days, a thought was coming in my mind. We mechanically chant Shri Vishnu Sahasranamam. Just before starting the 1000 names there is a dhyana sloka beautifully explaining that in a golden simhasanam under a ‘parijata vriksham’ Shri Krishna with four hands Shri Krishna is sitting with Shri Rukmini & Shri Satyabhama. Have we ever brought that image before us ???? Can any painter help make this please ????

  30. In the body of the ‘mayil’ , just near the bottom of ‘vel’ a ‘seval’ is also visible.

  31. Thank you Mr.Umesh and Mr.Mahesh. Great. It is an example for – “By thinking itself, we can achieve/attain the goal/target. Thinking is so powerful. Sun rays are everywhere. However, if it passed through a lens cotton will catch/get fire. Further, you can understand the effect of a small fire.
Secondly, Our Mahaperiyava is seen above Sri.Pillaiyar, near vizhudu. Hope i am right. Really thanks for sharing and showing the ways to reach Eswara. This itself will complete the Pooja Room. Those who are showing ways to reach Eswara are leaders (like Guru). They want everyone to be happy and get the blessings of Eswara (irrespective of their own family, children etc.) . You are really great.

Finally, from Pooja Room to bring it to the mind and heart (with all Vaganams). So that, it will be helpful for doing “Manasika Pooja”.

Finally, it will help to start realising that “i am a Soul & not Sareeram (body)”. Soul will never die & continous enjoyment. This body is one of the sirts for the Soul. Next day next shirt.

Once gain thanks for this to come out from the chain of “Punaravi Jananam & punaravi Maranam”. Mahaperiyava Charanam.

  32. Thanks for sharing this picture.I am speechless.Today when I was reciting Lalitha Sahasranamam I had a vague vision of Shiv Parivar .I finish my prayers open Sage of Kanchi and see this picture.Feeling blessed.Totally speechless.Thank you.Periyava Sharanam
