‘Shankara Vijayams’ and other books on Acharya –Madhaveeya Sankara Vijayam

I had mentioned that ‘Madhaveeya Sankara Vijayam’ has been a very popular work.  One reason for its popularity is that it is rich in poetic beauty [काव्यरस].  At the same time, it conveys the philosophical truths, doctrines etc., in depth and also describes the debates that Acharya held with learned people who had contrary views.  It also became popular because it was the first ever book among the Sankara Vijayams to be printed, published and distributed across the entire country.  Also, there were admirers who were very keen to see that it was widely propagated. More than a hundred years ago, its first ‘edition’ was published in Bombay and within the next thirty years, the second ‘edition’ from Pune1. It was a substantial volume printed together with two commentaries (व्याख्यानम्‌). One Vyakyanam was the ‘Advaita Rajya Lakshmi’ written by Achyutaraya Modak.  The other was the ‘Dindima Vyakyanam’ written by Dhanapati Suri.

The author of the Madhaveeya Sankara Vijayam has given it the title ‘Samkshepa Sankara Vijayam’ (सङ्क्षेप- condensed).  In the beginning of the book, he has mentioned that he has gathered and condensed his work from the biographies of Acharya that were already in existence.  He specifically mentions the name of Vyasachala and says ‘I have taken from his Sankara Vijayam, as well as other works, and am writing this one’.  He conveys with humility ‘ The slokas of the earlier poets are very sweet.  Even the sweetest food becomes cloying if eaten in excess, does it not? To prevent it from happening that way, I have mixed up my own verses with their slokas like the contrasting flavours of salt, hot and sourness, and written in an unusual ‘style’2.  There is also an element of truth in this modest statement.  The truth does not lie in suggesting that the earlier poets have sung sweetly and that he has sung in contrast to that.  His own writing is equally sweet, or even sweeter.  Then what is true is that he has incorporated a lot from other books into his own.  He has taken large sections from Vyasachaleeyam and included them at different places in his book. He has also taken many slokas from Raja Choodamani Deekshitar’s ‘Shankarabhyudam’, Ramabhadra Deekshitar’s ‘Patanjali Vijayam’, Poet Jagannatha’s ‘Bhagawat Pada Saptati’ and incorporated in this work.  ‘Ananda Gireeyam’ is also another book which he has taken as an important source.   Since it [Ananda Gireeyam] was written in a style where some slokas and a lot of prose [गद्यम्‌- gadyam] were mixed, not much could be included in this book which was written entirely in the form of slokas.  Still, he has also incorporated some of its verses;  He has also taken the essential ideas from some sections of its prose, and rendered them as slokas. In a nutshell, he has gathered the essence of many books and given in his book, enabling us read and enjoy all of them in one place.  He has done this in three ways; given the original as it is, modified the original a bit, and expanded upon what was available in the original.  It is for the very reason that the book is popular both among scholars and common people.

Some people ask: ‘He may have well drawn extensively from the Vyasachaleeyam, which he himself mentions by name, and from Ananda Gireeyam, one of the well-known earlier biographies.  However, rather than saying that he borrowed from works such as ‘Shankarabhyudam’, Patanjali Charitam, ‘Bhagawat Pada Saptati’ etc., could it not be that the authors of those books borrowed material from his book and incorporated it into their own?’

But the author himself has clearly stated that he has compiled from several such works! Not only that.  Although the Sankara Vijayams are composed in a highly poetic and tasteful manner, they are primarily regarded as religious texts [मत ग्रन्थ:] rather than as works of literature.  The very objective of their authors is that the reader should develop devotion to the Acharya and a sense of devotional mindset [आस्तिक्य बुद्धि:], rather than merely to enjoy them as literature. In such religious texts, the question, ‘Would it not be a loss of prestige to include material from the works of other scholars?’ does not arise.  The attitude is rather “Our purpose is only to provide a text that will enable people to read and recite with Bhakti. Whatever material helps in achieving that purpose may certainly be used”. With this in mind, they would freely draw upon other works as needed.

But Raja Choodamani Dikshitar, Ramabhadra Dikshitar, Jagannatha Kavi et al., have earned their reputation solely as poets.  They desired that their books should be known only as poetic compositions.  Would such people ever draw material from another book and incorporate it into their own creation? They would regard this as a loss of honour [गौरवहानि:]. If they were to do so without acknowledging it in their works, and the matter were later discovered, it would result in public disgrace, and they would be branded as “plagiarist poets”( चोर कवि:) or “literary thieves,” losing all respect. A Sankara Vijayam composed in such a tasteful manner would certainly have been known to many people – at least within scholarly circles.  In such a situation, would people who had earned a reputation as poets have dared to borrow from it and incorporate it into their own works?

Another point is this:  the Madhaveeya Sankara Vijayam is a very large text, containing about 2000 slokas.  The Shankarabhyudam, Patanjali Charitam, etc., are much smaller in comparison. The (Bhagawat Pada) Saptati contains only seventy verses in all.  When verses from other works are included in a large text, it may not appear unusual. However, if the source itself is very small and the borrowed material is substantial, would such a book be accepted in scholarly circles? Would the poet of such a work gain any real reputation? Since each of these three books has its own style, smooth narrative flow, and conceptual coherence, and since the verses (found in ‘Madhaveeya’) blend so naturally with the ‘text’, there is no scope for saying that they have been taken from other books.

When the author of Madhaveeya Sankara Vijayam himself does not consider it as loss of honour and openly acknowledges that he has drawn materials from many books, why should we raise an objection?
