மஹாபாரதத்தில் அநுசாஸனிக பர்வத்தில் பீஷ்மர் ஸகல தர்மங்களையும் தர்ம புத்ரருக்கு உபதேசிக்கும்போது கோஸம்ரக்ஷணத்தையும் சொல்லி கோ மஹிமையை எடுத்துக் கூறுகிறார். நஹுஷ மஹாராஜனுக்கு ச்யவனர் என்ற மஹரிஷியை விலை கொடுத்து வாங்கும்படியாக ஒரு ஸந்தர்பம், நிர்பந்தம் ஏற்படுகிறது. `[மூவுலகும் அடங்கும்] தன் த்ரைலோக்ய ராஜ்யம் முழுதையும் விலை கொடுத்தாலும் அந்த உத்தம ரிஷிக்கு ஈடாகாதே! எதைத் தருவது?’ என்று புரியாமல் அவன் தவிக்கிறான். அப்போது பசுவின் வயிற்றில் பிறந்த ஒரு ரிஷி அவனிடம் வந்து ஒரு பசுவை அவருக்கு விலையாகத் தந்தால் போதுமானது என்கிறார். அவர் சொன்னதை ச்யவனரும் மனஸார ஒப்புக் கொண்டு, ‘கோவுக்கு ஈடான எந்த இன்னொரு செல்வமும் நான் காணவில்லை – கோபிஸ்துல்யம் ந பச்யாமி தநம் கிஞ்சித்’ என்று சொல்கிறார். அப்படியே நஹுஷ மஹாராஜாவும் கோவைக் கொடுத்து அவரை வாங்கி அப்புறம் அவரை ஸ்வதந்திரமாக விட்டு விடுகிறான். கோதானத்துக்கு மிஞ்சி ஒரு புண்யமுமில்லை. பாப பரிஹாரத்துக்கு அதுவே பெரிய மருந்து. தானம் வாங்குபவர் அதை நன்றாக ஸம்ரக்ஷித்து வைத்துக் கொள்ளக் கூடியவர்தான் என்று நிச்சயப்படுத்திக் கொண்டே கோதானம் செய்ய வேண்டும். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள்

In the epic Mahabharata, under Anusasanika Parva, Bheeshmar while preaching all the Dharmas to Dharmaputra, speaks about Gho Samrakshanam and explains about the greatness of the cow. Once, King Nahusha gets caught in a situation which forces him to buy a Maharishi called Shyavanar by paying a particular price. He is in a great dilemma as to what object or an amount to be paid for the sage as even if he gives away his entire Kingdom (which encompasses all the three worlds) as a price, it wouldn’t amount to anything equivalent to the precious value of the great sage. At that time, a Rishi who was born to a cow, comes to him and suggests that it would be enough to offer a cow as his price. Sage Shyavanar also agrees to it wholeheartedly and says, “I have seen no wealth equivalent to the cow” – “Ghobisthulyam Na Pashyami Dhanam Kinchith”. Accordingly Nahusha buys the sage by giving a cow as his price and then lets him free. There is no better act of Punya than Gho Dhanam (Donating a cow). It serves as a great medicine for salvation of sins. We should first make sure that the person who receives the cow as Dhanam is capable enough to look after it well and only then should offer it as Dhanam. – Jagadguru Chandrasekharendra Saraswathy Swamigal

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara,

As many of you are aware, over the past few years, we have been doing Gho Dhanam Seva for the interested devotees. We get a lot of requests during the Mahalaya Paksham time (we did around 35 Gho Dhanams this year) but per Shastras we are all supposed to do Gho Dhanam at least ten times in our life times (during birth of child, marriage, ancestor thithis, etc). Like Annadhanam, Swarnadhanam, Bhudhanam, Gho Dhanam should be done frequently on Punnya Kalams/auspicious occasions and not just some one passes away. I’m letting you know this since there is a (wrong) perception that Gho Dhanam should be done only when some one passes away. The cost of Gho Dhanam varies depending on the price of the cow and calf, breed, etc. but we are here to help you do Gho Dhanam in case you want to do it. Doing Gho Dhanam also helps save the life of a cow and calf as well.
