Sri Periyava Kainkaryam – Lockdown Annadhanam Updates

Thirty two types of dharma or charity have been prescribed by the Sastras. Commencing with feeding the people and continuing with providing fodder to the cows, building food shelters, developing temple gardens, constructing hospitals, digging ponds and so on, it ends with a charity that involves the least expenditure, quenching the thirst of  people by keeping water shelters (Thaneer Pandhal). This charity is also least troublesome. Though the expenditure and trouble are less, this charity bestows Maha Punnyaa – a great blessing upon the donor since it rejuvenates the people who come with parched mouths and throats by providing them cool buttermilk. We have forgotten all these small yet significant dharmas (charities) performed for generations by our ancestors. – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara – First of all my heartfelt gratitude to all the donors who contributed for this very needy cause at these extremely critical times.

Ever since the lockdown was announced we have been actively looking to help out homeless/poor people who survive on odd jobs, old people who live on the temple prasadam (temples have been closed now for public and no more prasadam), migrant workers who are struck, physically and mentally challenged people sitting on roads with little hope, single mothers suffering without job or income. We also provided around 100 packs of grocery to gypsi (Narikurava) community who were rag pickers but currently don’t have any means for earning.

Our operations have been focused in and around Sholinganallur area (where I live) and places like Tambaram where I have a few like minded friends. I also have trust worthy friends in Cuddalore area where we have identified suffering old age/destitute homes, special school for mentally challenged children, and many roadside people in the outskirts of the town. For people who have a home but are jobless we provide them with grocery pack and rice. The grocery pack and rice will last for a month for a family of four. For the homeless we provide cooked food packets and water bottle. There are a few donors who contributed very generously which is helping us a great deal in dealing with this grave pandemic and suffering people. We have distributed around 200 grocery/rice bags so far and doing Annadhanam to 110 people every day. In the below pictures/videos you can how many people are living and lying in the streets waiting for our food every day.

The creation of Bhagawan does not start and end with humans so we all have a responsibility to feed Mother Cow, Rishabam, Svan (Dogs), Varahams, and Pakshis (birds) as well who were relying on left over trash from restaurants and snack/tea shops.

While what is happening is very unfortunate, it is a great opportunity for us who are blessed with resources to step-up and contribute our bit in helping our fellow countrymen as well as the voiceless who having been serving us without any expectations.

  1. Hello Sai Sir,

From US, what is the easy way to set up Monthly donation (small amount) to kgpfoundation for Anna Dhanam in India?

Would zelle be enough? or paypal?

    Please let me know

    Thanks

  2. Great Job Sai.
    One humble request.
Let all our volunteers wear the mask without fail at all times during the Seva.
This is a must, if Seva should continue un-interrupted.

  3. Great Service at this critical time.
Thank you so much for all the Donors and also for those who involved in distributing the relief materials to the needy.
Also spl thanks to Mr Sai for the nice posting.

    • Namaskaram,

Thank you for the feedback. As you see in the above pics our volunteers wear masks all the times. However, many a times we ask the representative of the group (to whom we are distributing food/groceries) to be volunteers so they can control the crowd and commotion a bit better than we do. We stay away and watch it from a distance so people are not falling over us. These volunteers, at times, take off their masks when they are trying to control the crowd. We have been constantly emphasizing the importance of wearing masks to our volunteers as well the recipients. Rama Rama

      • I fully understand your predicament.
It ws just a word of caution, in these times of unexpected calamities.
        Ram Ram.
