Kind Attn: Help Needed In Renovation of 1000 year+ Vaanam Partha Sivalingam (Sivalingam with no roof)

The goal of bhakthi is not only to make good human beings. It is to help us realize that we are one with that higher power that created us and to help us free from the shackles of worldly life. Apart from this, more than any other path, it also helps us be good human beings in a powerful way. Thus, to build a temple for everyone to see and remind everyone of Bhagawan is greater than any social service. – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal

Sri Periyava Kainkaryam – Help Needed in Renovation of more than 1000 year old Vaanam Partha Sivalingam (Sivalingam with no roof) shrI Vilvavana Nathar temple, Segal – Thiruthiraipoondi

By Sri periyavA’s anugraham, we are starting off this new Tamil Year Plava (ப்லவ வருஷம்) with our next Kainkaryam – a ancient Vanam Parthan Shiva Temple renovation Thiruppani.

Name: shrI Vilva Vana Nathar

Location:
Aadhirangam Segal (ஆதிரங்கம் சேகல்) Village, in Thiruthiraipoondi, Thiruvarur district (Tamilnadu)

Age:
Over 1000 years

Theertham:
 Marakkulam, also called Mara Theertham

Sthala Vruksham:
Vilvam

Location:
Sri Vilva Vana Nathar temple is situated in a 1 acre area to the west of Marakkulam lake in Aadhirangam Segal Village, in Thiruthiraipoondi, Thiruvarur district (Tamilnadu). This is a very old Shiva temple that fell into ruin a long time ago.

Highlight:

Marakkulam – the temple theertham, also called Mara Theertham, is a natural lake surrounded by temples on all four sides –

– Azhagiya Nathar Siva temple in Azhagiyanattham village to the North,

– Maraikkaadar Shiva temple to the South,

– Paranjotheeshvarar temple where Paranjothi munivar worshipped Shiva, on the East, and

– Sri Vilva Vana Nathar on the West

History:

Inscriptions in the Segal Vardhamaneshwara temple reveal some details about the history of this area. Segal and its surrounding villages, named Segal province in the olden days, were ruled by several Chola kings – Veera Cholan, Desingu Rajan and Maharajan at various points in time. Raja Raja Chola stayed here and worshipped Kali, situated on the south bank of this lake.

Discovery:

About 4 years ago, Siva Peetam Charitable Trust came to know of this temple. The brick temple was in completely dilapidated state and devoid of any worship for a long time. The Shiva lingam was covered by a termite hill and was in a pit that sand stealers had continually dug around. Many of them were able to feel the power of going near the Shiva lingam; so they stopped stealing sand.

Deities:

Sri Vilva Vana Nathar is a majestic Lingam with a 3.5 foot Aavudai that is more than 1000 years old and was worshipped by munivars and siddhars. Nandhi and Kala Bhairava statues that were once part of the temple, are now missing.

Renovation Efforts:

About 4 years ago, Siva Peetam Charitable Trust built a temporary shelter and made arrangements to resume worship. When Gaja cyclone hit the area, the shelter was damaged. The adiyar who performed pujas at the temple left the town; so worship came to a halt. Gradually, the temple came to be completely surrounded by thorny bushes. Last year, Siva Peetam volunteers removed all the thorny bushes, built another roof and made arrangements to resume weekly and monthly pournami Pujas.

Current Situation:

The youth of the village are now involved and have been managing the pujas well. Maha Shivarathri and Karthikai Deepam puja have also started and are now run by the villagers. Siva Peetam Trust has taken on the temple’s maintenance and puja expenses.

Next Steps:

– Build a proper stone temple to house the Shiva Lingam

– Replace missing Nandhi with new deity

– Plant Vilva trees around the temple

– Erect a fence to prevent wild bushes from taking over

– Convert half the available area into a garden (Nandhavanam)

– Perform temple Kumbhabihshekam

At this time, the plan is to build a temple with just a Shiva moola sthaanam and perform Kumbhabhishekam.

Cost:

Cost of materials: ₹ 6,32,250/-
Labor: ₹ 3,80,000/-
Total : ₹ 10,12,250/-

Timeline:

108 days from actual start of work
