We should try to utilize without fail, all the aid that Gho Matha comes forward to offer us with utmost compassion. Now we are letting go of what we can receive from her or misusing what we are receiving and also giving up what we are supposed to give her namely the protection she deserves. – Jagadguru Chandrasekharendra Saraswathy Swamigal

Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara,
There were two rescue operations happened in my area, one yesterday in the wee hours and another the day before morning. The one that happened yesterday was really heart breaking. There is a milk vendor near my area who has around 10 cows. He is a Hindu and has pictures of all the gods hanging in his front gate. However his audacity and cruelty has no bounds. As soon as the cow yields a calf he barely lets them go near their mother and milks them high and dry. Bother Mother Cow and Calf keeps crying out but he does not care.
Instead of milk, he feeds the calves with very little fodder which they won’t even know how to eat but he force feeds them with a tube. This is akin to feeding a new born infant with dhal rice and curry when all the newborn needs is mothers milk. This causes many calves to die rightaway due to indigestion; Some barely survive but there is no respite for them either. In a matter of couple of months, he calls the local slaughterhouse guy and sells them off too. Brutal isn’t it? He has been doing this for the past few years.
One of my contacts told me about this guy last week and from then on I have been frantically trying to locate his home. By Sri Periyava’s grace I found where he lived and went to his home yesterday AM to purchase the calves. He refused to give me saying that ‘Bhai’ will come today afternoon to pickup the calves as he had already committed to him. I then talked to his wife and persuaded her to give it to me this time instead of killing them brutally. FYI…I’m sure you all know how calves are killed for leather. They are thrown in extreme boiling water so their skin becomes tender soft for peeling to make leather products. (One of the key reasons why we have been distributing handouts on avoiding leather for the past few years).
At last, she reluctantly agreed to give it to me. Since mother and cow should not be separated, I asked if I can buy the cows too and they started yelling at me (they will be sent for killing the very moment they stop yielding). All this while, this guy won’t even look at me and kept milking all the cows furiously with the calves standing outside and watching helplessly at their mothers. While it is a grave sin to separate mother and calf in this case I had no other choice to save these calves lives. They are now safely in the Ghosala and my request to Ghosala is to feed them with mother’s milk instead of fodder. You could see how weary they are and their sunken bellies. We started giving the calves cows milk which is the need of the hour as you see in the picture below. Healthy calves are very active and look way different.
In my experience of cow rescues over the last couple of years, I have seen many cruelties happening right in front of my eyes but this guy has set the bar higher in a very wrong way. Normally I keep my emotions in check but this guy broke me down. Glad that we could save a couple of innocent babies who could even barely walk. Very unfortunately one of the babies died due to lack of feed just after a few hour of reaching the Gosala. Please check the video clips below and you will see what I mean.

Video Clips of the poor young calves (hardly couple of months old deprived of mother’s milk). See how fragile they are. One of the calves died in a few hours after reaching Ghosala.

This makes us think whether we are doing any good in buying pasum paal from local milk man paying much higher prices than packet milk, thinking that we are helping cows. Is it better to stop buying milk from these local milk men?
If we stop buying cow’s milk from local vendors, we will only be expediting their trip to the slaughter house.
Sai Srinivasan: Thank you very much for your efforts and service to this cause. Very sad to hear this story!!! Can we complain against this milkman to PETA.
Dear Sir,
You are doing a great job of protecting the cows and calves!
Koti namaskarams to you and your team.
The quantum of your operations require nothing less than a #Svarna_varaahan_yielding #Akshaya_Paatram.
Only Sri Mahaaperiyavaa and #Sri_Akilaandeswari can Bless you with the required resources. Of course there will be people contributing their mite to your cause, but your efforts require not less than a 10-15 Crores per year! Eeshwara!
This is heartbreaking. Gandhi is no model Hindu, but he had observed how cruel the milking process was and so had stopped taking cow’s milk. Most Westerners are not vegetarians, and not even religious in the traditional sense but are aware how wanton cruelty to animals is involved in obtaining leather and leather products. So the movement to avoid leather, and use substitutes like PU or pseudo leather is gaining ground in the West. We Indians are supposed to be religious but do not treat animals with kindness- see this man keeping pictures of all the gods and goddesses, yet ill-treating the cow and calf. The craze for economic development, material progress, commercial profit and spread of secularism have destroyed the old religious sentiment and natural respect towards the cow in our land. People under 35 constitute more than 50 % of our population now- we can realise how low is the religious spirit in the country today, among the younger generation. It is an uphill (hopeless?) task we face to bring about a change.
The matter described here is heart-rending. We really need a stout heart to witness such situations and move with such people. We salute Sri Sai Srinivasan .
