Other day I was thinking about how many different ways our Mahaperiyava is being addressed. Here are some that I am aware of – I am sure there are probably many other ways…If you know any, pl add them in the comments:
- Mahaperiyava
- Ummachi Thatha
- Periya Periyava – addressed by both Pudhu and Bala Periyava
- Periya Tirumeni – by a priest in Sabarimala (refer Sri Balu mama’s interview/articles)
- Jagadguru – although used for all Periyavas
- Sri Charanal – Sri Ra Ganapathi
- Parameswaran – Sri Pradosham mama
- Periyavar – many non-brahmins and non-hindus address mostly this way
- Acharya Swamigal – my father – he uses this term for all Periyavas!
- Paramacharya – many of us – although I have read that Mahaperiyava did not prefer that term
- Kanchi Munivar
- Nadamadum dheivam
- Nadache Devudu – same as above in Telugu

Florist Kamakshi who used to visit matam daily to offer flowers to Mahaswamiji addressed him as Appa ‘அப்பா’ to which he never objected. Mahaswamiji bestowed her with his padarakshai which she never expected.

My children used to call him ” Sami thatha”.
Same as ummachithatha.
1) ejaman (people who carries palanquin they used call by ejamaa. I forget the source where read/interviewd watched )
2) kamakshi (some mami used to tell in the queue used to call kamakchi ukanthiruku, kamakchi ukanthiruku. Experience with Mahaperiyava By: Shri TH Subash Chandran ),
3) Maharaj / Gurumaharaj (hindi) (Maratha swamigal used to call. Experience with Tiayagu thata )
4) padaswamigal ( one north side TTR person used to call “padaswamigal”. I come know from the experience with mahaperiyava : Ganesha ganapadigal )
I consider Him as my ‘Tandri’ (‘Father’ in Telugu) and address Him always this way whenever I pray, stand in front of Him.
Maha Periyava Name: Sarva Vyabi, Sarveswaran
My father (in 1960s) used to refer him (some telugu families probably did that) as Kanchi swamalavaru (same as swamigal in tamil). Some times “Peddayna”.
Referred as Mahaswami in all telugu discourses by our Gurus.
I have heard that Periyava was also referred to as Kumbakonam Swamigal, Kanchi Mamunivar, Kanchi Periyava, Kanchi Mahaan and in our household the term Sankaracharyar automatically referred to all of our three Acharyas. Jaya Jaya Sankara Hara Hara Sankara!
Pujya shrI Jayendra PeriyavA used to say “parabrahma svarUpi” as well in many of His talks. You may want to include that as well.
I have 2 equivalents that I use often I. English, which mean ishwarA.
