Periyava Sharanam!
சில்பி”யின் மனைவி பரமாச்சார்யரின் பக்தை. உடல் உபாதையால் காஞ்சிக்கு செல்லமுடியாத நிலையில் கணவனை கேட்டாள் :
”எனக்கு பெரியவா படம் ஒன்று நீங்க வரைந்து கொடுங்கோ, அதை பார்த்து பூஜை பண்ணிண்டிருக்கேன்”
1956ல் மனைவியின் ஆசையை பூர்த்தி செய்ய பெரியவாளின் படம் வரைய அனுமதி கேட்டார். முதல் முறையாக மஹா பெரியவாளை சந்திக்க ”சில்பி” க்கு அனுமதி கொடுத்தார் பெரியவர்.
”ராத்திரி வா எல்லா வேலையும் முடிஞ்சப்புறம் ”
பெரியவாளை படம் வரைவது கடினம். ”கொஞ்சம் அசையாமல் அப்படி இருங்கள் என்று அவரிடம் சொல்லமுடியுமா?” எப்படியோ சில்பி அவரை ”பிடித்து” விட்டார். அதை இணைத்திருக்கிறேன்.
அந்த இருட்டறையில் ஒரு எண்ணெய் தீபம் மட்டும் ஒளி வீசியது. எதிரே ஞான ஒளி அமர்ந்திருந்தது. அந்த ஞானப் பிழம்பின் கண்களில் ஆன்ம ஒளி. பயபக்தியோடு கைகள் சற்று பக்தியால் மரியாதையால் நடுங்க சில்பி கண்ணால் அவரை படம் பிடித்து மனதில் இருத்திக் கொண்டார்.
”ஸ்ரீநிவாஸா, நீ பல ஜென்மங்களில் ஈஸ்வரனை பூஜித்தவன். சிறந்த ஸ்தபதியாக சில்பியாக பல கோவில்களை, மூர்த்திகளை கல்லில் வடித்தவன். சாதாரண கல்லை தெய்வீகம் பொருந்திய தெய்வங்களாக மாற்றிய புண்யசாலி. இதுதான் உனக்கு கடைசி ஜென்மம். இனி பிறவி கிடையாது தெரியுமோ உனக்கு? இனிமே தெய்வங்களைத் தவிர வேறே எதையும் படம் எழுத மாட்டேன் என்று விரதமாக வைத்துக்கொள். நீ சில்ப சாஸ்திரம், சிலா சாஸ்திரம், ஆகமம், எல்லாம் தெரிந்தவன். புதுசா ஒண்ணும் தெரிஞ்சுக்கவேண்டாம். நாளைக்காலை சூரியன் உதயம் ஆனதிலிருந்து முழு மூச்சா ஒவ்வொரு வீட்டிலேயும். பகவானை, கோவில்களை, காகிதத்தில் கொண்டு சேர்க்கிற வேலை உனக்கு. நீ வரையும் ஆலயங்கள், மூர்த்திகள் சித்திரம் தத்ரூபமாக இருக்கு. நீ நன்னா இருப்பே !”
மகா பெரியவா ஆசிர்வதித்தார். சில்பி சாஷ்டாங்க நமஸ்காரம் செய்தார்.
1953ல் மஹா பெரியவாளை காஞ்சிபுரத்தில் பார்த்தது முதல் அவர் முற்றிலும் மாறிவிட்டார். பெரியவாளுக்கு தெரியாதா யாராலே என்ன ஆகணும் என்று!
பெரியவாளை தனது இல்லத்துக்கு அழைத்து பாத பூஜை பண்ண சில்பிக்கு ஒரு ஆசை. சந்தர்ப்பம் கிடைத்தபோதெல்லாம். பெரியவாளை வேண்டிக்கொண்டே இருந்தவர்க்கு ”சரி அதுக்கென்ன அப்படியே ஆகட்டும்” என்று சிரித்து தலையசைத்தார் பெரியவா.
ஒரு நாள் அதிகாலையில் சாந்தோம் கடற்கரையில் சமுத்திர ஸ்நானம் செய்துவிட்டு, பெரியவா மைலாப்பூர் கச்சேரி ரோடில் நடந்து வந்து கொண்டிருந்தார். திடீரென்று அருண்டேல் ரோடு திருப்பத்தில் நின்று, ‘இங்கேதானே ‘சில்பி’ வீடு எங்கியோ இருக்கிறது?’ என்று கேட்க அதை உறுதி செய்து கொள்ள, அந்தத் தெருவில் திரும்பி, ‘அவன் வீடு எங்கேயிருக்கு ? விசாரி ‘ என்று கூறவே, பரணீதரனும் மற்றவர்களும் ஒவ்வொரு வீடாக சென்று விசாரித்தனர் .
.
அதற்குள் பெரியவா ஒரு வீட்டுக்கு முன் வந்து நின்று ‘இதுவா பாரு ?’ என்றதும், உள்ளே சென்று விசாரித்ததில்
ஆம். அதுவேதான்! அப்போது ‘சில்பி’யின் குடும்பத்தினர் மட்டுமே வீட்டில் இருந்தனர். ‘சில்பி’ எங்கோ கோவில்களுக்கு படம் வரைய வெளியூர் சென்றிருந்தார்.
சில்பியின் வயதான அம்மாவுக்கு கையும் ஓடவில்லை. காலும் ஓடவில்லை. பெரியவா நேரே பூஜையறைக்குச் சென்றார். பின்னர், கூடத்தில் வந்து அங்கு மாட்டியிருந்த படங்களை எல்லாம் ஒவ்வொன்றாகப் பார்த்து விட்டு புறப்பட்டார். அப்போது ‘சில்பி’யின் அம்மா, ‘எனக்கு ஆஸ்துமா தொந்தரவு அதிகமா இருக்கு. ரொம்பக் கஷ்டப்படறேன்’ என்று கூறினார்.
‘தினம் இரண்டு வில்வ தளம் சாப்பிட்டுண்டு வாங்கோ’ என்று பெரியவா வைத்தியம் சொன்னார்.
சில்பி ஊரிலிருந்து திரும்பியதும், ‘பெரியவா வீட்டுக்கு வந்த போது தாம் இல்லாமல் போய்விட்டோமே’ என்று மிகவும் வருத்தப்பட்டிருக்கிறார். பெரியவாளைத்தரிசித்தபோது,
”பெரியவா, இந்த சிறியேன் கிரகத்துக்கு வந்திருந்தீர்கள் என்று கேட்டு பரம சந்தோஷம் எனக்கு. ஆனால் எனக்கு பாக்யம் இல்லை நான் வீட்டிலே இல்லாம போய்ட்டேனே ”
அப்போது பெரியவா சிரித்துக் கொண்டே, ‘நீ ஆத்துக்கு வரணும், ஆத்துக்கு வரணும்’ னுதானேடா கூப்பிட்டுண்டிருந்தே. ”நான்” ஆத்திலே இருக்கறப்ப வாங்கன்னு கூப்பிட நீ இல்லையே ’ என்றார்.

Silpi’s wife was unwell, and unable to visit Kanchipuram for Mahaperiyava’s darshan. So she asked her husband to draw a picture of Mahaperiyava for her to worship.
Periyava agreed to Silpi’s request .
But to draw Him was a difficult task. One could not ask Mahaperiyava to remain motionless ( as if giving a pose) so that one could draw! And there was just a small oil lamp burning in a corner. But Silpi observed the situation well, including the light that he saw in Mahaperiyava’s eyes and registered everything in his mind.
” Srinivasa, you had been a sthapati in your previous births and knew the sastra well. You had sculpted numerous vigrahas in many temples. You had turned mere stones into divine sculptures. This is your last birth. Do you Know? Resolve not to draw anything other than divine pictures. You had been a devotee of Lord Shiva. You do not have to learn anything new. From the morrow, you have to draw the pictures of the deities in our temples and see that they reach every home. Your drawings are life like. You will be blessed”. So Mahaperiyava blessed Silpi.
Silpi totally changed. After all. Mahaperiyava knew who could accomplish what.
Silpi had a desire that Mahaperiyava should visit his house so that pada puja could be performed.. He had been requesting Mahaperiyava for such a visit. Mahaperiyava had also consented willingly, though no date was fixed.
One early morning Mahaperiyava had completed snan in the ocean in Santhome and walked on the streets of Mylapore. He asked the accompanying devotees to enquire about the residence of Silpi, and Bharanidharan and others went about the task.
In the meantime, Mahaperiyava stood in front of a house and asked whether it was not Silpi’s. Yes it was. He entered the house. Silpi was out of station and his old mother was overwhelmed and did not know what to do! Mahaperiyava entered the puja room , and then observed all the pictures hung in the hall. He then started to leave. Mother then mentioned that she was having trouble from Asthma. Periyava advised her to take two Bilva leaves daily.
When Silpi returned, he felt so sad that he was not present when Periyava visited his house. During his next visit, Silpi told Periyava that though he was happy that Periyava had visited his house, he felt sad at his own misfortune that he was not present on the occasion.
Periyava laughed and said: ” You have only been requesting me to visit your house. You did not say that I should come when you were present”.
Mr. Nanjappa, many many thanks for this divine trouble. Reading/hearing/thinking about any thing divine purifies the mind and makes it saatvic which is next to Godliness. And helping someone to reach this end is automatically unselfish karma!

I forgot to mention an important fact. It was Devan தேவன் who decided to publish this serial in Ananda Vikatan in 1948. Silpi immediately went to Kanchipuram and obtained Mahaperiyava’s blessings. To whichever place he went to visit the temple, before he began his work, Silpi would first perform Shiva puja . He would then turn in the direction of Kanchipuram and salute Mahaperiyava. After his return, Silpi would show the drawings to Mahaperiyava. Along with the drawings, Silpi would provide short notes. It was Devan who wrote the detailed notes accompanying the drawings as they appeared in the magazine. These details have been mentioned by Gopulu.
[ For those who may not know, “Devan” ( Mahadevan in real life was the defacto editor of the then popular Tamil Weekly “Ananda Vikatan”. He was a great writer, and specialised in social novels and travel accounts. Devan is to Tamil social novels what “Kalki” became in respect of historical novels. They were great contemporaries. They may be considered the Dickens and Hardy of modern Tamil literature, though Dickens and Hardy were not contemporaries, and though both specialised in social novels. Later on, Hardy turned to full time poetry, as his last two novels were considered too pessimistic and met with severe criticism. Both Kalki and Devan did not indulge in such pessimism, and both displayed humour, subtle wit and delighted in portraying the lighter moments of life, no less than the more serious aspects. Mention of the name Devan triggers all these thoughts. .]

Shilpi’s (A great artist of yesteryears in TN for Tamil magazines) wife is a devotee of Paramacharya. Unable to travel to Kanchi due to physical harassment, she asked her husband, “Draw me a big picture of Maha Periva, I worship seeing the picture”.
In 1956, he asked for permission to paint a picture of the Periva to satisfy his wife’s desire. Periva gave permission to Shilpi.
“Come at night time”, said Maha Periva.
It is difficult to paint Periva’s picture. How can one tell Him to remain immovable for a while?” Somehow Shilpi drew the picture of Periva and that is what is attached herewith.
Only one oil lamp lit up in that dark room. In front of it, sat the light of wisdom. The spiritual light was glowing in the eyes of omnipresent. Shilpi’s eyes trembled with reverence and slowly catch His figure in his mind.
Maha Periva said, “Srinivasa (Shilpi’s original name), you worshipped Ishvara in many of your earlier Janmas. You did the best pictures and Gods’ Idols in many temples in those Janmas. You transformed the ordinary stone into Gods. This is your last birth. Do you know that you are no longer born? Take a pledge that you will not draw anything other than Gods. You knew Shilpa Shastra, Sila Shastra, Agama, etc. No need to learn anything anew now. Your works are extraordinary and your paintings will be everybody’s house henceforth. You’ll be good.”
Maha Periva blessed him. Shilpi did Shasthanga Namaskaram.
He changed completely since he met Maha Periyava in Kanchipuram. Periva knew it with whom what to be done.
Shilpi desired to take Periva to his home and perform Pada Puja. Whenever he gets the opportunity to meet Periva, he had asked without fail. Maha Periva laughed and said, “Will see”.
Periva happened to be in Madras sometime. Early one morning he was bathing in the sea at Santhome’ beach and then was walking through Mylapore Kacheri Road. Suddenly standing at the turn of the Arundel Road He asked, “Shilpi’s house is here, somewhere right?” and asked the assistants to find out the place immediately.
He moved further and stopped in front of one house and asked to enquire whether it is Shilpi’s house. It was, indeed. During that time only Shilpi’s family members were there as Shilpi was out for drawing some sketch of temples.
Periva just got inside the house and moved around the house including Puja room. Periva left the house thereafter. While leaving the house, Shilpi’s mother came forward and said she was suffering from Asthma. Periva suggested her to have two ‘Bilva’ leaves daily to get relief from Asthma.
When Shilpi came back home, he was a little unhappy that he missed the occasion. Next time when he met Periva, he asked, “I was very happy that your feet touched my home. However, l lost the Bhagyam of not being there at that time”.
With a smile, Periva said, “you only called me to your home, not while you are at home, did you?”

The book was published by Vikatan Prasuram, விகடன் பிரசுரம், 757, Anna Salai, Chennai 600002. The first edition came out in 2012. I do not know about subsequent editions. சில்பிக்கு பூர்வ ஜென்ம வித்யா பலம் இருந்ததுடன், மஹாபெரியவாளின் பூரண அனுக்ரஹமும் இருந்தது. அதனால் அவர் கோவில்களையும் அங்குள்ள தெய்வச் சிற்பங்களயுமே வரைந்து தள்ளினார். இவை ஃபோட்டோவைவிடவும் தத்ரூபமாக இருக்கின்றன. இது பூரண தெய்வ அனுக்ரஹம் தான். இவற்றை நாம் 50, 60களில் வாரப் பத்திரிகையிலும் தீபாவளி மலர்களிலும் பார்த்து மகிழ்ந்தோம். பின்னர் சில கோவில்களுக்கு நாம் நேரில் சென்று பார்த்தபோதுதான் சில்பியின் சித்திரங்களின் உண்மை மஹத்துவம் புரிந்தது. நம் கோவில்கள் எப்படி அலாதியோ, சில்பியின் சித்திரங்களும் அப்படியே அலாதிதான்.
அதிர்ஷ்டவசமாக, இந்த சித்திரங்கள் மறைந்து போகவில்லை. ஆனந்த விகடன் நிறுவனம் கைமாறிவிட்டாலும் 1948 முதல் 1961 வரை அந்த இதழில் வந்த சித்திரங்களைத் தொகுத்து, ‘தென்னாட்டுச் செல்வங்கள்” என்ற பெயரில் இரண்டு பாகங்களாக வெளியிட்டிருக்கிறாகள். 900 பக்கம் உள்ள இந்தப் பதிப்பில் நூற்றுக்கணக்கான சிற்ப சித்திரங்களை ஒரே சமயத்தில் ஒரே இடத்தில் பார்க்கும்போது பிரமிப்படைகிறோம், மெய்சிலிர்க்கிறது. அந்தக் கோவில்களுக்குப் போனாலும் நாம் கவனிக்காத பல நுணுக்கங்களை இச்சித்திரங்கள் காட்டுகின்றன. இவற்றுடன் அவர் எழுதிய விளக்கங்களும் அருமையானவை. இது முழுதும் தெய்வாம்சம் பொருந்திய விஷ்யம் என்பது தெளிவாகிறது. சில்பியின் பெருமையை நாம் அன்று சரியாக உணரவீல்லையே என்ற வருத்தம் மேலிடுகிறது.
பிரபல ஓவியர் கோபுலு இதன் முன்னுரையாக எழுதிய கட்டுரையில் சில்பியை “64வது நாயன்மார்” என வருணித்திருக்கிறார். மெய்யான வார்த்தை.
இச்சித்திரங்கள் சாதாரண Newsprintல் வெளிவந்த பத்திரிகையில் தான் அன்று முதலில் வெளிவந்தன. இவற்றை பலர் எடுத்து பைன்ட் செய்து வைத்தும் அவை நிலைக்கவில்லை. இப்போது வந்திருக்கும் பதிப்பு glazed newsprint என்ற வகைக்காகிதத்தில் தான் இருக்கிறது. ஆர்ட் பேப்பரில் வரவேண்டிய விஷயம்- ஆனால் அந்த விலையை எத்தனைபேர் கொடுப்பார்கள்? அதனால் இந்த அளவிலேயே திருப்தியடையவேண்டி இருக்கிறது.
