November 7th is the Aradhana day of Swamigal. Lord Muruga sent His favorite son to Tamilnadu to spread Sanatana Dharma during Swamigal’s lifetime. His contribution is limitless and His bakthi towards Mahaperiyava is beyond words and Mahaperiyava had lot of regards for Swamigal. On this day, let us do namaskaram too Swamigal.

சிறந்த முருக பக்தரும், ஆன்மீகவாதியுமான கிருபானந்த வாரியார் மறைந்த நாள் (நவ.7, 1993)
கிருபானந்த வாரியார் தமிழ் நாட்டின் வேலூர் மாவட்டத்தில் உள்ள காட்பாடிக்கு அருகில் பாலாற்றங்கரையில் அமைந்துள்ள காங்கேயநல்லூர் என்னும் சிற்றூரில் மல்லையதாசருக்கும், மாதுஸ்ரீ கனகவல்லி அம்மையாருக்கும் பிறந்த பதினொரு பிள்ளைகளில் நான்காவது மகனாக பிறந்தவர். செங்குந்த வீர சைவ மரபைச் சேர்ந்த இவர், தனது ஐந்தாவது வயதில் திருவண்ணாமலையில் வீர சைவ குல முறைப்படி பாணபத்திர தேவர் மடத்தில் சிவலிங்க தாரணம் செய்விக்கப்பெற்றவர். இவா தனது 19-வது வயதில் அமிர்தலட்சுமி என்பவரை திருமணம் புரிந்தார். இவர் சிறந்த முருக பக்தர்.
தனது தந்தையாரிடம் கல்வி, இசை, இலக்கிய, இலக்கணங்களைக் கற்றுத் தேர்ந்த இவர், எட்டுவயதிலேயே கவிபாடும் ஆற்றலைப் பெற்றவர். 12 வயதிலேயே பதினாயிரம் பண்களை மனப்பாடம் செய்தவர். பதினெட்டு வயதிலேயே சிறப்பாகச் சொற்பொழிவாற்றும் ஆற்றலுடையவராய் விளங்கினார். இவர் இயற்றியுள்ள வெண்பாக்கள் ஆயிரத்துக்கும் மேல் இருக்கும்.
இவருடைய பிரசங்கங்கள் பெரும்பாலும் பேச்சு வழக்கை ஒட்டியே அமைந்திருந்த காரணத்தால், பாமர மக்களது உள்ளம் கவர்ந்தவரானார். இவரது ‘ஆன்மீக மொழி’ பாமரர்களுக்கும் புரியும் விதமாக வேதாந்த உண்மைகளையும் சிந்தாந்தக் கருத்துகளையும் கூறியது. சுவாமிகள் தமிழோடு சைவ சித்தாந்தத்திலும் பெரும் புலமை பெற்றவர்.
அவருடைய சொற்பொழிவுகள் அநேகமாக நாடக பாணியில் இருக்கும். இடையிடையே குட்டிக் கதைகள் வரும். நகைச்சுவையும் நடைமுறைச் செய்திகளையும் நயம்படச் சொல்வதும் இவருக்குரிய சிறப்பியல்புகளாகும். வாரியார் சுவாமிகள், சாதாரணமாக எழுதப் படிக்கத் தெரிந்த பாமர மக்களும் புரிந்து கொள்ளும்படியாக 500-க்கும் மேற்பட்ட ஆன்மீக மணம் கமழும் கட்டுரைகள் எழுதியுள்ளார். சிவனருட்செல்வர், கந்தவேள் கருணை, இராமகாவியம், மகாபாரதம் உள்ளிட்ட ஏறதாழ 150 நூல்கள் இயற்றியுள்ளார்.
1993 ஆம் ஆண்டு வாரியார் சுவாமிகள் லண்டன் பயணமானார். பின்னர் அதே ஆண்டு லண்டனில் இருந்து திரும்பும் வழியில் விமானப் பயணத்திலேயே நவம்பர் 7-ஆம் தேதி காலமானார்.

Sri Kripananda Variyar was a remarkable person on several counts. Well versed in Tamil literature and Saiva Siddhanta, learned in Sanskrit and Tamil, knowing the nuances of grammar and music, exemplifying personal worship in daily life and performing Kumbhabishekam to numerous temples. His life was studded with miracles., His learning was so formidable that Mahaperiyava had conferred on him the title “Saraswati Katakshamrutam”. Realising his status as an initiated Saiva Siddhanti with Linga Dharanam, Mahaperiyava had forbidden him from prostrating! Sri Variyar was able to make the common man appreciate the truths of Religion and Philosophy, while his learned discourses would make even a scholar sit up and take note.’ as he had always something novel to convey.
He was as prolific in writing as brilliant in speech. No one has brought out the finer points of Kamban’s Ramayana as he has. He has composed thousands of verses in classical style on the Mahabharata , all of which have not been published as yet. Many of his discourses are now available in CD form.
His active life as a religious exponent coincided with the rising tide of atheism in Tamil Nadu. Though he was able to hold his ground, he could not only not stem the tide of atheism among the younger generation, he also attracted the ire of some atheists who once physically attacked him. He joined forces with Kamaraj at one time to take on the forces of Atheism on a common platform, but it did not make much impact. Such was the force of atheism which in Tamil Nadu rode on the wave of anti-Brahminism and Aryan invasion theory. [ Hinduism is treated as an Aryan imposition] Though he had his niche followers among all classes of devotees, one feels that his full stature has not been fully realised..
Perhaps the greatest service Sri Variyar has rendered for posterity is his writing explanatory notes on the works of Arunagirinatha- Kandhar Anubhuti, Kandhar Alankaram, Kandhar Andhati and above all, extensive commentary on that great Tamil Hymn on Subrahmanya- the Tiruppugazh. Thanigaimani V.S.Chelgalvaraya Pillai wrote the meanings of all the works of Arunagirinatha, with short notes on some difficult terms, but he did not write full commentary. That role was fulfilled by Sri Variyar. He wrote extensive, detailed commentary on Tiruppugazh- and his is the only such commentary till date. Though he wrote for over 35 years, he could not cover all the hymns. But what he has written is unequalled- his references and citations are stunning in range, they virtually constitute an encylopaedia on Hindu religion, culture and philosophy, as also astika literary traditions. Tamilians for whom Subrahmanya is Kuladevata or Ishtadevata shoud not fail to read Sri Variyar’s commentary on Tiruppugazh. Such knowledge we would not get from any other source. Kaumaram stands infinitely enriched by the works of Variyar..
Being an initiated Saiva Siddhanti, Sri Variyar had some limitations in fully accepting the philosophy of Acharya Shankara. Though Shankerite Vedanta and Saiva Sidhanta are Advaitic in ultimate import, yet there are differences in the philosophical terminology and nuances. But such minute differences only bother a paper scholar, as in practical sadhana, there is virtually no difference in approach. Sri VAriyar covered this common ground in his discourses and thus served as a bridge between the two, as did his Master Sri Arunagirinatha and the other Saints Pattinathar and Thayumanavar. Thus Sri Kripananda Variyar stands as the exemplar of the continuance of the Tamil philosophic tradition even in the age of atheistic denial. One hopes that his shining role in such dark times would attract much greater appreciation in the years to come. Salutations to such a great Spirit.

Also saw a confirmation by Mahaperiyava (earlier article n Variar Swamigal in this site) that Variar Swamigal gave in charity everything he earned . So much inspired.
