யஜ்ஞத்தில் முக்யமாக ஆஹுதி கொடுக்கப்படும் த்ரவ்யம் பசுவிடமிருந்து பெறுகிற நெய்யே. ஆஜ்யம் என்று அதைச் சொல்வது. ‘ஹவிஸ்’ – தமிழில் அதுவே ‘அவி’ என்று வரும்; அந்த ஹவிஸ் – என்பதே யஜ்ஞத்தில் ஆஹுதி கொடுக்கப்படும் பலவிதமான த்ரவியங்களுக்கும் பொதுப் பெயராயினும், குறிப்பாக ஹவிஸ் என்றால் பசும் நெய்தான். மற்ற ஆஹுதி த்ரவியங்களையும் நெய்யால் தடவி சுத்தம் செய்துதான் ஹோமம் செய்ய வேண்டும்.

அக்னிஹோத்ரம் முதலான பல யஜ்ஞங்களில் கோக்ஷீரம் ஹோமம் செய்யப்படுகிறது. ததி என்கிற தயிரும் ஹோம த்ரவ்யமாக ப்ரயோஜனமாகிறது. ஸத்துமா என்கிற ஸக்துவும் தயிரும் கலந்து ததி ஸக்து ஹோமம் என்று செய்வார்கள்.

நெய், பால், தயிர் அக்னியில் ஹோமமாகின்றனவென்றால், அந்த அக்னியை வளர்த்துக் கொடுப்பதே எது? கோமயத்தைப் போட்டுத் தட்டிய வரட்டிதானே? ஆகையினால் கோ இல்லாவிட்டால் யஜ்ஞம், வேள்வி என்பதே இல்லை.  – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள்

The predominantly used product in the Yagnya to give ‘Ahuthi’ is only ghee which is obtained from the cow. It is called ‘Aajyam’. ‘Havis’ which changes into ‘Avis’ in tamizh; though this ‘Havis’ is a common name for various products that are given as Aahuthi in the Yangya, it particularly signifies only cow’s ghee. All other products offered as Aahuthi should also be cleansed with ghee and only then can the Homam be performed.

In many Yagnyas like Agnihotram, Gho Ksheeram (milk) is being used in the Homam. Curd called as ‘Dhathi’ is also used as a product offered in Homams. Atype of flour called ‘Sakthuma’ and curd are mixed and used in what is known as ‘Dhathi Sakthu’ Homam.

While ghee, milk and curd are offered in the Agni (Holy fire) done as Homam, what brings forth that fire in the first place? Is it not the cow-dung cakes called ‘Varatti’ that grows the fire for the Homam?
