வாயில்லா ஜீவன் என்று சொல்லப்படுகிற வர்க்கத்தைச் சேர்ந்ததே பசு; அப்படியிருந்தாலும் அது ‘அம்மா’ என்று அடிவயிற்றிலிருந்து வாய்விட்டுக் குரல் கொடுக்கிறது. ‘அம்மா’ என்று சொல்கிற அந்தப் பசுவே நமக்கெல்லாம் அம்மாவாக இருக்கிறது. அம்மாவின் முதல் லக்ஷணம் என்ன? பால் கொடுப்பதுதான். நாம் குழந்தையாயிருந்த போது நம்மைப் பெற்றெடுத்த தாயார் நமக்குப் பாலூட்டி உயிரூட்டினாள். அந்தக் குழந்தைப் பிராயத்திலேயே பசுவும் நமக்குப் பால் கொடுத்து ப்ராண ரக்ஷை தந்தது. பெற்ற தாய் பால் கொடுப்பது நம்முடைய குழந்தைப் பருவத்தோடு முடிந்துவிட்டது. ஆனால் நமக்கு வயதான பின்னரும் பசு தரும் பாலும், அதிலிருந்து பெறப்படுகிற தயிர், மோர், நெய் ஆகியனவும் நம் ஆஹாரத்தில் தொடர்ந்து இடம் பெறுகின்றன.  –    ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள்

The cow indeed belongs to the category of a species devoid of the faculty of speech; still it lets out a full-mouthed cry –“amma”– from deep down the stomach. The same cow which cries ‘amma’ happens to be the ‘amma’ (mother) for all us. What is the primary characteristic of a mother? It is to feed milk. When we were infants, our biological mother fed us with milk and gave us succour. During the same period of infancy, the cow too offered us milk and sustained our life breath. The act of our mother feeding us got over with the end of our childhood.
