விபரீதம் விளைந்தது!
தாம் திரை போட்டுக் கொண்டு க்ளாஸ் எடுக்கும்போது உத்தரவில்லாமல் வெளியே போகிறவர்கள் அப்படி (ப்ரம்மரக்ஷஸாக) ஆகிவிடுவார்கள் என்று ஆஜ்ஞை பண்ணிவிட்டுப் பதஞ்ஜலி அநேக காலம் பாடம் நடத்திக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.
திரையை யாரும் எக்காரணத்தைக் கொண்டும் தூக்கிப் பார்க்கக் கூடாதென்றும் உத்தரவு போட்டிருந்தார். அக்னி ஜ்வாலையைத் தாங்க முடியாது என்பதால்.
இப்படி, ரொம்ப நாள் பாடம் நடந்தது. அப்புறம், கதை வளர வேண்டாமா? அதனால் ஒரு சிஷ்யனுக்கு, ‘எப்படி இவர் ஒரு ஆஸாமியாக இருந்து கொண்டே ஆயிரம் பேருக்கும் சொல்லிக் கொடுக்கிறார்? திரை போட்டுக் கொண்டு என்னவோ ஸித்து, கித்து பண்ணிச் செய்கிறார்போல இருக்கிறது. அது என்ன என்றுதான் பார்த்து விடுவோமே!’ என்று கட்டுப்படுத்த முடியாத ஆவல் உண்டாயிற்று.
எச்சரிக்கையை மீறித் திரையைத் தூக்கிப் பார்த்தான்.
ஆதிசேஷ ஸ்வரூபத்துடன் ஆயிரம் சிரஸோடு இருந்தவரின் ஜ்வாலாமயமான திருஷ்டியும் விஷ ச்வாஸமும் பட்டு, அத்தனை சிஷ்யர்களும் பஸ்மமாகிவிட்டர்கள்!
குரு வசனத்தைக் கேட்காமல் மீறினால் மஹத்தான அனர்த்தம்தான் உண்டாகும் என்பதற்கு நிரூபணமாக இப்படி ஆயிற்று: “குருவசந – வ்யதிலங்கநம் ஹ்யநர்த்த:” என்று ‘பதஞ்ஜலி சரித’த்தில் இந்த இடத்தில் சொல்லியிருக்கிறது.
இப்படி வ்யாகரண பாடம் ஒரே விபரீதத்தில் முடிந்தது.
முழு விபரீதமாகப் போகாமல் அதில் ஒரு சின்ன விலக்கு ஏற்பட்டது. என்னவென்றால் ஆயிரம் சிஷ்யர்களும் பஸ்மமாகாமல் ஒருத்தர் மாத்ரம் தப்பினார். பாக்கி 999 பேர்தான் எரிந்து போனது. ‘ஆயிரத்தில் ஒண்ணு’ என்று சொல்லும் வழக்கம் அதிலிருந்துதான் வந்ததோ என்னவோ?
அந்த ஒருத்தர் எப்படித் தப்பினாரென்றால், அவர் கொஞ்சம் மந்த புத்திக்காரர். பாடம் அவருக்கு அவ்வளவாகப் புரிவதில்லை. இத்தனை நாள் எப்படியோ கட்டுப்பாடாக உட்கார்ந்து கொண்டிருந்து விட்டார். புத்தி ஸூக்ஷ்மம் இல்லாதவர் தானென்றாலும் அவர் ஆயிரம் மைலுக்கு அந்தண்டை இருக்கும் வங்காளத்திலிருந்தாக்கும் படிக்க வந்தவர். கௌடதேசம் என்று அதைச் சொல்வார்கள்.

The Undesirable Thing Happened!
After issuing the order that whoever went out without permission while he was taking the classes behind the screen would become a Brahmarakshas [ब्रह्मरक्षस्], Patanjali continued to take classes for a long period of time.
He had also instructed that whatever may be the reason, no one should lift the curtain and look inside, since it was not possible for anyone to bear the heat of his breath.
This way, the lessons went on for a long time. Should not the story proceed further? Therefore, one of the disciples developed an irrepressible curiosity and wondered: “How is one individual able to teach a thousand students? Sitting behind the curtain, he seems to be doing some wizardry. Let me see what it is”.
Violating the warning, he lifted the curtain and looked within.
Due to the blaze in the eyes and the poisonous breath of the person who was in the form of Adisesha with a thousand heads, falling on them, instantly all the disciples were burnt to ashes.
This incident proved that calamity will befall if the instructions of the Guru are not heeded. This situation is described as “guruvachana-vyathilanghanam hyanartha:” in Patanjali Charitham (गुरुवचन- व्यतिलङ्घनं ह्यनर्थः).
Thus ended the grammar lessons; in the most horrifying manner.
Without becoming entirely horrible, there was a small relief. Instead of all the thousand disciples getting burnt, one disciple escaped. The remaining 999 got burnt. Could it be that the saying “one in a thousand” had its origin from this incident?
This single person escaped because he was little dull. He was not able to understand the lessons properly. Till then he had somehow managed to sit through the lessons in a disciplined manner. Although he was not mentally sharp, he had come from Bengal, which was a thousand miles away. People used to call that region as Gowdadesh (गौडदेश).
