மநு தர்மசாஸ்திரத்தில் ஐந்து தர்மங்களை அடிப்படையாகச் சொல்லுமிடத்தில் அஹிம்ஸை, ஸத்யம், அஸ்தேயம் இந்த மூன்றையும் சொல்லிவிட்டு நாலாவதாக ‘சௌசம்’ என்னும் சுத்தத்தையும், கடைசியில் இந்த்ரிய நிக்ரஹத்தையும் கூறியிருக்கிறார். ‘பிரம்மசர்யம்’ என்று பதஞ்ஜலி சொன்னதைக் கொஞ்சம் விஸ்தாரம் பண்ணினால் அதுவே இந்திரிய நிக்ரஹம். பதஞ்ஜலி சொன்ன அபரிக்ரஹத்துக்குப் பதில் மநு சௌசத்தைச் சொல்லியிருக்கிறார். தனக்கு அத்யாவச்யமானதற்கு அதிகமாக ஒன்றைச் சேர்த்துக் கொண்டால் அதுவே திருட்டுதான் என்று மநு நினைத்திருப்பார் போலிருக்கிறது. அதனால் ‘அஸ்தேயம்’என்று (திருடாமையைச்) சொன்னதிலேயே அபரிக்ரஹமும் அடக்கம் என்று அவர் அபிப்ராயப்பட்டிருக்கலாம். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர ஸரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள்
In the ‘Manu-Dharma-Shastra’ among the five canons which form its basis, it lists out ‘Ahimsa’ (Non-Violence), ‘Sathyam’ (Truth) and ‘Aastheya’ (Non-Stealing) as the first three. ‘Soucham’ or ‘Cleanliness’ is listed as fourth and finally ‘Indriya-Nigraha’ or Sense-Control’ is listed as the fifth. If the ‘Brahmacharya’ as told by Patanjali, is slightly expanded then it becomes ‘Indriya-Nigraham’. Manu has told about ‘Soucham’ instead of ‘Aparigraha’. Manu would have opined that if one possesses anything beyond their basic-necessity, then that itself is ‘stealing’. Probably due to that reason Manu would have thought that the phrase ‘Non-Stealing’ includes ‘Non-Possessiveness’. – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswati Swamigal
