தர்ம சாஸ்த்ரமே விதித்த வ்ரதமாக ஏகாதசி இருப்பதால் மாத்வர், வைஷ்ணவர், ஸ்மார்த்தர் ஆகிய எல்லாருமே அதை அநுஷ்டித்தாலும் ரொம்பவும் தீவிரமாகக் கடைப்பிடிப்பது மாத்வர்தான்.
ஸாதாரணமாக வேத மந்திரங்களையே நேராகப் பிரயோஜனப்படுத்திச் செய்கிற கர்மாக்களுக்குத்தான் மதாநுஷ்டானங்களில் ப்ராதான்யம் [முதலிடம்] கொடுப்பது வழக்கம். நம் மதத்துக்கு மூல நூல் வேதம்தானே? அதோடு பித்ரு கர்மா, தேவ கர்மா என்ற இரண்டுக்குள் பித்ரு கர்மாவுக்குப் ப்ராதான்யம் கொடுத்து விட்டு அப்புறம்தான் தேவ கர்மாவைச் செய்ய வேண்டும். சிராத்தம் என்பது வேத மந்திரங்களாலேயே ஆகிற கர்மா. அதோடு அது பித்ரு கர்மாவும் ஆகும். ஏகாதசி உபவாஸத்தில் வேத மந்திரங்களுக்கு இடமில்லை. நாமஜபம், பஜனை ஆகியன பௌராணிகமும் தாந்த்ரிகமுமே ஆனவை. பூஜை பண்ணுவதில் மட்டுமே வேத மந்த்ரங்கள் கொஞ்சம் சேரும். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள்
Although Ekadasi is a fasting observed by all, Madhwas, Vaishnavas, Smarthas, etc., as it has been prescribed by Dharma Sastra itself, it is only Madhwas who observe it very rigorously.
Generally, among various religious practices, foremost priority is normally given only to rituals (activities) which are directly mentioned in the Vedas. Is not the Vedas, original text of our religion? In addition, between rituals related to ancestors (Pithru Karma) and rituals related to deities (Deva Karma), first priority should be given to rituals related to forefathers and then only rituals related to Devas should be done. Shraddham is a ceremony entirely performed with incantations of Vedas (chanting of mantras of Vedas). Besides, it is also a ritual related to ancestors. In the observance of Ekadasi fast, there is no chanting of Veda mantras. Chanting of the names of Bhagawan (Nama Japa) and singing His glory (Bhajan) belong to Powranika and Thanthrika.
