விஷ்ணு நித்ரை செய்து கொண்டிருந்தபோது லோகத்தை ஹிம்ஸை பண்ணிய ஒரு அஸுரனைக் கொல்வதற்காக அவருடைய சரீரத்திலிருந்தே ஸ்த்ரீ ரூபமாக ஒரு சக்தி வெளியே போய் ஸம்ஹாரம் செய்துவிட்டு வந்ததாகவும், விழித்துக் கொண்ட பகவான் அவளுக்கே ஏகாதசி என்று பேர் கொடுத்து இந்த ஏகாதசி வ்ரதத்தை ஏற்படுத்தினாரென்றும் பாத்ம புராணத்தில் கதை வருகிறது. மஹாவிஷ்ணு கூர்மமாகவும், தன்வந்திரியாகவும், மோஹினியாகவும் அவதாரங்கள் எடுத்து, க்ஷீராப்தியில் அம்ருதம் கடையப் பண்ணி அதை எடுத்துக் கொடுத்த நாளே ஏகாதசி என்பதாலும் அதைப் பொதுவில் விஷ்ணு ஸம்பந்தமுள்ளதாக நினைக்கிறோம்.
ஆனால் இந்த அம்ருத மதன ஸமயத்தில் முதலில் உண்டான காலகூட விஷத்தைப் பரமேச்வரன் புஜித்ததை முன்னிட்டுத்தான் அன்று எவரும் சாப்பிடக் கூடாது என்று ஏற்பட்டிருப்பதாக சைவர்கள் சொல்வதுண்டு.
இப்படி சைவம், வைஷ்ணவம் இரண்டுக்கும் ஏற்கத் தக்கதாயிருப்பதோடு ஹிந்துவாகப் பிறந்தவனில் எந்த இஷ்ட தெய்வத்தைக் கொண்டவனாயினும், எந்த ஜாதியைச் சேர்ந்தவாயினும் ஸகலருக்குமான வாழ்க்கை விதிகளைப் போடுகின்ற தர்ம சாஸ்த்ரமும் ஏகாதசி உபவாஸத்தை விதித்திருப்பது அதன் விசேஷத்தைக் காட்டுகிறது. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள்
There is a story in the Padma Purana which says that when Lord Vishnu was in slumber and an asura was troubling the world, a force emanated from his body, in a feminine form, killed the asura and returned to Him. Waking up, the lord gave the feminine form the name, Ekadasi and established this austerity. Since the day in which Lord Maha Vishnu took the form of Koorma, Dhanvantari, and Mohini and facilitated churning of ambrosia in the ocean of milk and gave it, was Ekadasi, we generally consider that the Vrata is associated with Maha Vishnu.
However Saivaites claim that it has been prescribed to fast on that day because it was poison which came forth first when ambrosia was being extracted by the churning and that was consumed by Lord Shiva.
In this way, the fact that observance of Ekadasi fasting has been prescribed by the Dharma Shasthras (Hindu treatises on Dharma), not only to suit both Vaishnavites and Saivaites but also for anyone born as a Hindu and who may have any preferred deity or belong to any religion, indicates its significance. – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal

I have a query..i read somewhere that we are not supposed to keep same photos of god in the puja room. Is this true.
Did you mean ‘Same photos’ or ‘Some photos’? If so which gods? Pl. explain. Rama Rama

Mam, that is ridiculous. Don’t believe in such absurd / myth anymore. God is God. Photos and Vigrahas are the way of concentrate / focus the almighty, period. If you do Puja to these photos, you need to do it regularly, else just do Namaskaram everyday, everywhere in your house. As long as you do not leave the photos uncared, it is ok to keep any number of photos of same God.
