‘பூணூல் ஒருத்தனை பிராம்மணனாக்கி விடவில்லை; ஒழுக்கம்தான் அப்படி ஆக்குகிறது‘ என்று சொன்னால், உடனே உபநயன ஸம்ஸ்காரத்தை நிறுத்தி விட வேண்டும் என்று அர்த்தம் பண்ணிக் கொள்வதா? ஒன்று சிலாக்யமானது, ஆனால் அதைவிட சிலாக்யமாக இன்னொன்று இருக்கிறது என்றால் அப்போது இரண்டாவதை வலியுறுத்துவதற்காக முதலாவதைக் கழித்துக் கட்டுவது போல exaggerate பண்ணியே பேசுவது வழக்கம். ‘பாயின்ட்’ நன்றாக நம் மனஸில் தைப்பதற்காக இப்படிச் சொல்கிறது. பிராம்மணனுக்குப் பூணூல் முக்யமானாலும், அதைவிட ஒழுக்கம் முக்யம் என்பதை வலியுறுத்துவதற்காகத்தான் பூணூலே வேண்டாம், ஒழுக்கம் போதும் என்பது. திருக்குறளில் ஆயிரம் யாகத்தைவிட ஒரு பிராணிக்குக்கூட ஹிம்ஸை செய்யாமலிருப்பது உசத்தி என்று சொல்லியிருப்பதும் இப்படித்தான். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள்

If it is said, “Wearing the sacred thread (poonal) does not make a person Brahmin but only the discipline that makes him’, should we understand that the entire Upanayana ceremony should be abolished immediately?  Something is excellent.  But if there is another thing which is still better, to emphasise on the second, it is always a practice to exaggerate by downgrading the first one.  It is said that way to ensure that the point penetrates well in our minds.  Only to convey that although wearing the sacred thread is important, it is more important to observe the discipline, it has been said that there is no need for wearing the sacred thread but to follow discipline.   In similar vein only, in Thirukkural, it is said that it is much better not to hurt one animal than to perform thousand holy sacrifices.- Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal
