ஏகாதச்யாம் து கர்தவ்யம் ஸர்வேஷாம் போஜன த்வயம் |

—இது ஒரு ச்லோகத்தின் முதல் பாதி. இதற்கு என்ன அர்த்தம்? “ஏகாதச்யாம் து கர்தவ்யம் ஸர்வேஷாம்” என்றால் “ஸகல ஜனங்களாலும் ஏகாதசியன்று இன்னவாறு செய்யப்பட வேண்டும்” என்று அர்த்தம்.

என்ன செய்யப்பட வேண்டும்?

“போஜன த்வயம்” என்று ‘ஆன்ஸர்’ வருகிறது.

அர்த்தம் புரிகிறதோல்லியோ? ‘த்வயம்’ என்றால் இரண்டு. ‘போஜன த்வயம்’— இரண்டு தரம் சாப்பாடு.

“எல்லாரும் ஏகாதசியன்று இரண்டு தடவை போஜனம் செய்ய வேண்டியது” என்று அர்த்தமாகிறது.

இதென்ன? ஏகாதசி என்றால் பட்டினி, தண்ணீர்கூட இல்லாமல் நிர்ஜலமாயிருக்க வேண்டும் என்பார்கள். இங்கேயானால் ஒரு தடவை மட்டுமில்லை, இரண்டு தடவை — போஜன த்வயமாக – சாப்பிட்டாக வேண்டுமென்று சொல்லியிருக்கிறது?

இது விசித்ரமாக வார்த்தை விளையாட்டுப் பண்ணியிருக்கும் ச்லோகம். இதில் “போஜன” என்று வருகிறதே அதை “போ”, “ஜன” என்று இரண்டு வார்த்தைகளாகப் பிரித்துக் கொள்ள வேண்டும். அப்போதுதான் ஸரியான அர்த்தம் கிடைக்கும்.

“போ” என்றால் “ஓய்!” என்று கூப்பிடுவதாக அர்த்தம்.

“போ! ஜன!” என்றால் “ஓ, ஜனங்களே!” என்று எல்லா மக்களையும் கூப்பிடுவது.

இப்போது நான் சொன்ன ச்லோகத்துக்கு (பாதி ச்லோகத்துக்கு) என்ன அர்த்தமாகிறதென்றால்

“ஹே ஜனங்களே! ஏகாதசியில் எல்லாராலும் இரண்டு செய்யத் தக்கன – அதாவது இரண்டு கார்யம் செய்யத் தக்கன”.

இரண்டு போஜனம் என்று அர்த்தம் இல்லை. இரண்டு காரியம் என்று ஆகிறது. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள்

“Ekaadashyaam thu karthavyam sarveshaam bhojana dwayam”
[एकादश्याम् तु कर्तव्यम् सर्वेषाम् भोजन द्वयम्]

This is the first part of a sloka.  What is the meaning of this?  “Ekaadashyaam thu karthavyam Sarveshaam” means, “On Ekadasi day, it should be done like this by all the people”.

What should be done?

The answer comes as “Bhojana Dwayam”.

Did you understand the meaning? “Dwayam’ means Two. “Bhojana Dwayam”, means two times food.

It conveys the meaning that everyone should have food two times on Ekadasi day.

What is this?  Normally we have heard that on Ekadasi one has to fast and also go waterless.  Whereas here you are saying that it is said that food should be taken not just once but twice?

 This sloka is actually a wonderful play of words.  The word “Bhojana” [भोजन] in this should be split into two words, “Bho” [भो] and “Jana’ [जन].  Then only the correct meaning can be grasped.

“Bho” means, calling all the people, like “Hey”.  “Bho Jana!” means calling, “Hey, people”.

The meaning of this sloka (half sloka) becomes:

“Hey, People! On Ekadasi day, two (things) have to be done by all” – that is, “two things are required to be done”.
