பெங்கால் மாதிரி மத்ஸ்ய ஸம்பந்தங்கூட இல்லாமல் ராஜஸ்தானம், குஜராத், ஸெளராஷ்ட்ர, கட்ச் மத்யப் பிரதேஷ் ஆகிய ராஜ்யங்களில் எல்லா ஜாதியாரிலுமே மரக்கறி உணவுக்காரர்கள் ஏராளமாயிருக்கிறார்கள்.
டேராடன் மாதிரி இடங்களில் பிராம்மண கூலிக்காரன் முதுகிலே பெட்டி கட்டிக் கொண்டு அதில் வெள்ளைக்கார துரையை உட்கார்த்தி வைத்துக் கொண்டு போவான். ஆனால் வழியில் வாயிலே பச்சைத் தண்ணி விடமாட்டானாம். போக வேண்டிய இடத்துக்குப் போய் விட்டு, ஸ்நானம் பண்ணித் தன் ஆஹாரத்தைத் தானே சமைத்துத்தான் சாப்பிடுவான்.
தர்வான், வேலைக்காரி முதலியவர்கள்கூட யஜமான் வீட்டில் நாயாக உழைத்தாலும், அந்த வீட்டுச் சாப்பாட்டைச் சாப்பிடுவது கிடையாது என்பதே வடதேசத்து வழக்கம் ஜாதியில் உசத்தி, தாழ்த்தி சொல்லிக் கொண்டு “தாழ்ந்தவன் வீட்டில் உசந்தவன் சாப்பிட்டாலென்ன?” என்று கேட்டுக் கொண்டு எல்லாவற்றையும் குழப்பிப் பல பட்டடை பண்ணுவதுதான் சீர்திருத்தம் என்று இங்கே நாம் நினைக்கிறோமென்றால், அங்கே தாழ்ந்த நிலையில் உள்ள வேலைக்காரன்கூட உயரந்த நிலையிலுள்ள முதலாளி வீட்டில் சாப்பிடுவதில்லை என்றிருக்கிறான்! இப்படி ஜாதிக்காக இல்லாமல் ‘ஸ்வயம்பாகம்’ என்ற நியமத்துக்காக என்று வைத்துக் கொள்ளும்போது, சண்டையும் இல்லாமலிருக்கிறது.

In places like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Saurashtra, Kutch, Madhya Pradesh, etc. there are many vegetarians irrespective of their caste, who do not eat even fish like Bengalis. In Dehradun, one can see a Brahmin servant who carries a European master on his back. It is said that he doesn’t drink even a drop of water on the way. After leaving the master at the destination, he goes home, takes bath, cooks his own food and eats it.
Even house maids, guards and the like do not eat at their master’s house though they may do all the hard work there. This is the practice in North India. Here in south, we discriminate one caste from another, label one caste as superior and another as inferior. We argue, ’why can’t people of upper caste eat at the houses of people of lower caste?’ and create confusion about customs and traditions. We call these as social reforms. On the other hand, in the North, even a servant belonging to the economically deprived section of society never eats in the house of someone who is well off! The discipline of cooking one’s own food helps overcome caste related arguments and disputes.

நன்றாக கவனித்து பார்த்தால் பெரியவர்கள் இதை எல்லாம் ஒரு 30 அல்லது 40 வருஷத்திற்கு முன்னரே சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்கள் என்பது தெளிவு. அன்றைய சூழலில் இந்த அளவுக்கு தகவல் தொடர்பு இல்லாததால் அதனை கேட்டவர்களுக்கு மட்டுமே இதனை தெரிந்துகொண்டிருப்பார்கள்.. அவர்கள் இதை எல்லாம் அப்பொழுதே எல்லாருக்கும் சீரான முறையில் கொண்டு சேர்த்திருந்தால் இன்று இவ்வளவு மோசமான நிலை வந்திருக்காது… ஆனால் அன்றைய சூழலில் இதனை கேட்டவர்கள் கூட இது எல்லாம் காலத்திற்கு உதவாவதது அல்லது பிற்போக்குத்தனம் என எண்ணி ஒதுக்க கூட வாய்ப்பு உண்டு. அன்று வேதத்திற்க்கு இப்பொழுது தரும் மதிப்பை எல்லாரும் தரவில்லை.. ஆராய்ந்து பார்த்தால் இந்த அனைத்து ஹானிக்கும் நாமே தான் காரணம் என்பது நன்றாக புலனாகிறது.. இந்த அபக்சாரத்தை எப்படி சரி செய்யப்போகிறோம் என எண்ணினால் இன்னமும் குற்ற உணர்வு அதிகமாகிறது. எப்பவும் எல்லாத்துக்கும் அடுத்தவர்கள் மீது பாரத்தை போட்டு பழகிய நாம் இதற்கும் அப்படியே இதை எல்லாம் பெரியவாள் தான் பாத்துக்கணும் என சொல்லி தப்பித்துக்கொள்வது தவிர வேறு வழி இருப்பதாக தெரியவில்லை.
