1. What is Pushkaram?
Pushkaram is an Indian festival dedicated to worshiping of rivers. It is also known as Pushkaralu (in Telugu), Pushkara or Pushkar. It is celebrated at shrines along the banks of 12 major sacred rivers in India, in the form of ancestor worship, spiritual discourses, devotional music, and cultural programmes. The celebration happens annually, once in 144 years along each river. Each river is associated with a zodiac sign, and the river for each year’s festival is based on which sign Jupiter is in at the time.
2. What is the significance of Thamirabarani Maha Pushkaram?
Guru Bhagawan (Jupitar) moves from Thula to Vrichika Rasi (Libra to Scorpio) and Thamirabarani is the holy river that corresponds to this rasi. Thamirabani River in itself is very holy and has a lot of spiritual significance. The Pushkaram event makes it even more auspicious. Sri Vilambi year, “Purattasi” Month 26th Friday to “Ippasi” Month 6th Tuesday Gregorian (English Calendar) Dates: Oct 12 2018 to Oct 23 2018. This happens during the next Guru Peyarchi. It will be celebrated @ Kurukkuthiruai, Thirunueveli.
4. Who should do Pariharams during Thamirabarani Maha Pushkaram?
Those born in Meenam, Midhunam, Dhanusu, Vrichikam, and Kanya Raasis, should do a holy dip in Thamirabarani River which is Great Parihaaram (atonement). For all others also Thamirabarani Snaanam during that period will crystallize lots of good.
