‘ஹிந்து’ என்ற வார்த்தை அந்நிய தேசத்தார் நமக்கு வைத்த பெயர்தான். நம்முடைய சாஸ்திரங்களில் அந்தப் பேரைப் பார்க்கவே முடியாது. ஆனால் பிற்காலத்தில், வெளிதேசத்தார் வைத்த ‘ஹிந்து ‘என்ற பெயரையே ஸம்ஸ்கிருத ‘ரூட்’டிலிருந்து வந்த மாதிரி நம்மவர்கள் அர்த்தம் பண்ணியிருக்கிறார்கள் – அதாவது ” ஹிம்ஸாயாம் தூயதே ய: ஸ ஹிந்தூ(இ)த்யபிதீயதே” என்று! ஹிம்ஸையில் எவன் ரொம்பவும் துக்கப்படுகிறானோ அவனே ஹிந்து என்று இதற்கு அர்த்தம். இது சமத்காரமாகப் பண்ணியது என்றாலும் ஹிந்து மதஸ்தர்கள் அஹிம்ஸைக்காரர்கள் என்பதால்தானே இப்படி ஒரு ‘டெஃபனிஷன்’ கொடுக்க முடிந்திருக்கிறது? இந்தப் பெரிய கௌரவம் நமக்குப் போகப்படாது என்றால், முன்னைவிட எல்லா ஜாதியாரும் கலந்து கொண்டு வாழும்படியாக இருக்கிற இந்தக் காலத்தில் புலால் உணவுக்குப் பழக்கப்பட்டவர்களும் முன்னைவிட மரக்கறி உணவில் அதிக நாட்டம் கொள்வது நல்லதென்று தோன்றுகிறது. – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள்

The name ‘Hindu’ was given to us by foreigners. This name is not there in our Sastras. However, later our people gave an interpretation as if the name ‘Hindu’ was derived from Sanskrit: “Himsaayaam dhuyathe yah sah Hindu (i)thyabhidheeyathe”‘! (” हिंसायां दूयते यः सः हिन्दु इत्यभिधीयते“) The meaning of the above phrase is: ‘he who feels sad when violence is perpetrated is a ‘Hindu’’. Though this interpretation is a smart one, this definition could be given only because Hindus believe in Ahimsa isn’t it?
