  1. It’s scorching heat here in Chennai and kept complaining about it. After seeing this post I HAD to stop my complaints!!! Chandrasekhara!!

  2. This is all right as the Ideal What about practicality? We have lost the art /science of constructing dwellings to suit the Indian weather. The traditional houses were built with thick walls of country bricks, joined with mud, plastered with lime mortar, roof consisting of country tiles laid on bamboo base, with a pial in front, open courtyard at the centre, with passages . The ceiling was high. Some well to do people would have ‘Madras’ terrace, which again was constructed our of thin country bricks. A house constructed like this was cool in summer, and warm in winter. Even the huts built by the poor with mud walls and straw roof were cool in summer and warm in winter. In the name of progress, we have given up our native technology based on our genius and experience, and taken to concrete monsters which add to the heat, by absorbing the heat during the day and emitting it after sun set. We have constructed miles of tar roads, concreted the passages and foot paths , all of which add to atmospheric heat. And in all cities and towns, open spaces are occupied, high rises are proliferating ,trees are cut to facilitate buildings, and greenery is disappearing. Fans, coolers and ACs cannot remedy the situation. And to cope with summer, we took to simple cotton clothing, and even changed our food items. Thus only a comprehensive approach and changes in lifestyle can enable us to bear, if not beat, the summer.
