Periyava Golden Quotes-805

Saivaites were also called ‘Mukkaayam Thalliyavargal’ (Ones who shunned three ‘kayam’). ‘Kaayam’ means body right? Body is flesh and blood, right? Does Mukkaayam mean three different bodies (‘Muk’ means three and ‘Kaayam’ means body)? No, it should not be understood that way here. Does this Mukkaayuam mean Sthoola Sareera, Sookshma Sareera, and Kaaranaa Sareera? No as well. Here ‘Mukkaayam’ means Onion (vengaayam), Garlic (ullikkaayam), and Asafoetida (perungaayam). Saivaites abolished these three items from their food as they increased the Raajasa and Taamasa Guna. The usage of the term ‘Kaayam’ – body made of flesh – is also pun intended. – Jagadguru Sri Chandrasekharendra Saraswathi Swamigal
