மஹான்களுக்கு அருளிய மஹாலக்ஷ்மி

மஹாலக்ஷ்மியின் பரமாநுக்கிரகத்தைப் பெற்ற இன்னொரு மஹான் ஸ்ரீ வித்யாரண்யர். அத்வைத ஆசாரியர்களில் மிகவும் சிரேஷ்டமான ஸ்தானம் அவருக்கு உண்டு. ஆனால், அவருடைய முழுப் பெருமை இது மட்டுமல்ல. நாலு வேதங்களுக்கும் சேர்த்து பாஷ்யம் பண்ணின மஹாபுருஷர் அவர். ஜோதிஷம், வைத்திய சாஸ்திரம், தர்ம சாஸ்திரம், (ராஜ்ய பரிபாலனம் பண்ண உதவும்) அர்த்த சாஸ்திரம், இலக்கியத்துறை என்றிப்படி எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் கிரந்தங்கள் உபகரித்தவர் அவர். அவருடைய பெயரே காரணப் பெயராக இருக்கிறது. வித்யா – அரண்யர். அரண்யம் என்றால் காடு. ஒரு பெரிய காட்டில் பல தினுசான மரம், செடி, கொடிகளும் மண்டியிருக்கிற மாதிரி வித்யையின் பல துறைகளும் அவரிடம் செழித்திருந்தன.

இவரைப்பற்றி நான் சொல்லப் போகிற கதையை சரித்திர ஆராய்ச்சியாளர்கள் ஒப்புக் கொள்வார்களோ, மாட்டார்களோ? ‘ஹிஸ்டரி’க்காரர் ‘மிஸ்டெரி’(அற்புத நிகழ்ச்சி) வந்தால் ஒப்புக் கொள்ள மாட்டார்கள். ஆனால், இன்றைக்கும் ஸயன்ஸுக்குப் பிடிபடாத அற்புதங்களைப் பற்றிக் கேள்விப்பட்டுக் கொண்டுதான் இருக்கிறோம்.

கதை இதுதான்: பூர்வாசிரமத்தில் வித்யாரண்யர் ஏழைப் பிரம்மச்சாரியாக இருந்தபோது, மஹாலக்ஷ்மியைக் குறித்துக் கடும் தபஸ் இருந்தார். இவருடைய சிரத்தையை மெச்சி மஹாலக்ஷ்மி பிரசன்னமானாள். ஆனால், ஒரு குண்டைத் தூக்கிப் போட்டாள். “இந்த ஜன்மாவில் உனக்குத் திரவியம் பெறுகிற யோக்கியதை இல்லை. அது விதியின் நிர்ணயம். அடுத்த ஜன்மாவில் அநுக்கிரகிக்கிறேன் என்று கூறி அந்தர்த்தானமாகி விட்டாள்.

பிற்காலத்தில் ‘இரண்டாவது சங்கரர்’ என்கிற அளவுக்குப் ப்ரக்யாதி பெறப் போகிறவர் இவர். அதற்கேற்றாற்போல், இப்போதே ஆதி சங்கரர் செய்த ஒரு ‘சாமர்த்திய’த்தை இவரும் செய்து காட்டி விட்டார். அது என்ன சாமர்த்தியம்?

தாம் சந்நியாசம் வாங்கிக் கொள்வதற்கு அம்மாவின் அநுமதியைப் பெறுவதற்காக ஆதிசங்கரர் செய்த சாமர்த்தியம் உங்களுக்குத் தெரிந்திருக்கும். அம்மாவோடு குளிக்கப்போன பிரம்மச்சாரி சங்கரர் ஆற்றில் முதலையின் பிடிப்புக்கு வேண்டுமென்றே ஆளானார். தாயார்க்காரி பதறினாள். “அம்மா, நீ பதற வேண்டாம். நான் சந்நியாசம் வாங்கிக் கொள்ள நீ அநுமதி தந்தால் முதலை என்னை விட்டுவிடும். ஏனென்றால், துறவு பெற்றுவிட்டால் அது மறு ஜன்மா போலாகும். இந்த ஜன்மாவில் முதலையின் பிடிப்புக்கு ஆளாக வேண்டும் என்று எனக்கு விதி இருக்கிறது. அடுத்த ஜன்மாவில் அது என்னைப் பாதிக்காது” என்றார் சங்கரர். அந்தத் தர்மசங்கடமான நிலையில், பெற்ற தாயார் ஒருத்தி அநுமதி தராமலிருக்க முடியுமா? இவ்விதமாக ஆசாரியாள் சாமர்த்தியம் பண்ணி – தாயாரின் அங்கீகாரம் பெற்று – சந்நியாசியாவதாக அப்போதே சங்கற்பம் செய்து கொண்டார். உடனே முதலையும் அவரை விட்டுவிட்டது.

“இந்த ஜன்மாவில் உனக்கு அருள் பண்ணுவதற்கில்லை” என்று மஹாலக்ஷ்மி வித்யாரண்யரிடம் சொன்னவுடன், இவரும் அதே ‘தந்திர’த்தை (Tactics) மேற்கொண்டார். அதாவது, உடனே சந்நியாச ஆசிரமம் வாங்கிக் கொண்டு விட்டார். “அம்மா! மறு ஜன்மா வந்துவிட்டது. இப்போது ஜஸ்வரியத்தைக் கொடு” என்று லக்ஷ்மியிடம் சொன்னார்.

அவளும் தன் வாக்குப் பிரகாரம் ஸ்வர்ணத்தை வர்ஷித்துவிட்டாள்.

சுற்றிலும் எங்கு பார்த்தாலும் தங்கமும் நவநிதியும் கொட்டிக் கிடக்கிறது. சந்நியாசியான வித்யாரண்யருக்கு அதைப் பார்த்ததும், தாங்க முடியாத ஏமாற்றமும், துக்கமுமாகி விட்டது. ‘அடடா, தந்திரம் செய்வதாக நினைத்தேன்; கடைசியில் ஏமாந்தல்லவோ போய்விட்டேன். வீட்டின் ஏழ்மை போவதற்காக தனம் யாசித்தேன். இப்போதோ துறவியாகி விட்டேன். இனிமேல் எனக்கு ஏது வீடு? சந்நியாசி பணத்தைத் தீண்டவே கூடாதே. சுயம்கிருத அனர்த்தமாக நானாகவே அசட்டுத்தனமாக உபத்திரவத்தை வேண்டி வாங்கிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறேனே! விதிப்பிரகாரம் ஏழையாகவே வாழ்ந்து ஆயுஸை விட்டிருந்தாலும், அடுத்த ஜன்மாவிலாவது இத்தனை ஐச்வரியமும் பெற்று ராஜபோகமாக இருந்திருக்கலாமே” என்று அழ ஆரம்பித்து விட்டார்.

வித்யாரண்யர் மட்டுமில்லை; நம்மில் ரொம்பப் பேர் இப்படித்தான் வேண்டாததற்கெல்லாம் ஸ்வாமியை வேண்டிக்கொண்டு, அவர் நம்மிஷ்டப்படி கிருபை செய்தபின் “அடாடா, நம்மிஷ்டம் என்று ஏன் ஒன்று இருக்கவேண்டும்? அவர் இஷ்டம் என்று விட்டிருக்கக்கூடாதா? இப்போது அறியாமையால் அனர்த்த பரம்பரையை அல்லவா வலிய வாங்கிக் கட்டிக்கொண்டிருக்கிறோம்?” என்று விசனிக்க வேண்டியதாகிறது. நமக்கு எது வேண்டும் என்று அவருக்கே தெரியும் என்று விடுவதுதான் புத்திசாலித்தனம்.

வித்யாரண்யர் மகா புத்திமானாதலால் விசனம் உடனே தெளிந்தது. ஒரு காரணார்த்தமாகத்தான் அம்பாள் இப்படி விளையாடியிருக்கிறாள் என்று புரிந்து கொண்டார்.

அது மாலிக்காபூரின் தட்சிண தேசப் படை எடுப்பை ஒட்டிய காலம். துருக்கனான மாலிக்காபூர் ராமேசுவரம் வரையில் போய் ஹதாஹதம் செய்திருந்தான். முக்கியமாக நம் பிரசித்தி பெற்ற ஆலயங்களையெல்லாம் முக்கியமாக பண்ணினான். நம் தர்மங்களை அழித்தான். அந்த சமயத்தில் அதை எதிர்த்து நிற்க, நல்ல திரவிய வசதியுள்ள ஹிந்து சாம்ராஜ்யம் எதுவும் இல்லை.

இப்போது வித்யாரண்யர் இந்த மஹா பெரிய பரம புண்ணியமான காரியத்தை நினைத்தார். ‘இத்தனை நிதி கொட்டிக் கிடக்கிறது. அம்பாள் அநுக்கிரகத்தால் ஒரு ராஜ்ய பரிபாலனத்துக்கு உதவி பண்ணும் அளவுக்கு நமக்குப் புத்தி தீக்ஷண்யமும் இருக்கிறது. இந்தச் செல்வ பலம், நம் அறிவு பலம் இரண்டையும் கொண்டு ஒரு ஹிந்து சாம்ராஜ்யத்தை மேலோங்கி வருமாறு ஸ்தாபனம் பண்ணுவோம்’ என்று தீர்மானித்தார்.

அவருடைய சொந்த நஷ்டம் ஸநாதன ஹிந்து தர்மத்துக்கே பெரிய லாபமாகப் பரிணமித்தது.

There  was  another  great  MahAn  who  was  fully  blessed  by  MahAlakshmi;  his  name  is  Sri  VidhyAranyar.  He has an elevated position among Adhwaita AchAryAs. But that alone does not account for his fame.  He  was  a  great  soul  who  wrote  commentary  for  all  the  four  VEdhAs.  He  wrote  books  on  Astrology,  Medical  science (Vaidhya  SAstram),  Dharma  SAstram,  Artha  SAstram (it helps  govern  a  country),  Literature, etc.  His name itself is a logically derived one.  VidhyA—–Aranyam.  Aranyam means forest.  As  plenty  of  trees,  plants, and  bushes  are  abundantly  found  in  a  forest,  so  also,  many  branches  of  VidhyA   were  mastered  by  him.

The  story  which  I  am  going  to  narrate  now  about  him  may  or  may  not  be  accepted  by  researchers  of  history.  Historians will not accept anything where mysteries are found! But even today,  we  keep  hearing  about  surprising  incidents  that  could  not  be  explained  by  science.

This is the story:–

Before  he  renounced  the  world  and  became   a  saint,  as  a  poor  Brahmin  bachelor,  he  undertook   a  severe  penance  towards  MahAlakshmi.  MahAlakshmi   was pleased with his concentration and appeared before him.  But She threw a bomb!  “You  do  not  have  the  eligibility  to  get  wealth  in  this  birth;  that  is  fate’s  decision;  I  will  bless  you  in  your  next  birth”—saying  thus,  She  disappeared.

He  was  going to  become  so  famous  as   to  be  called  the  ‘Second  Sankarar’  in  the  future.   In  line  with  that  prediction,  he  did  a  smart  thing  exactly  like  Adhi  Sankarar  did  when  He  was  a  bachelor. What was that smart thing?

You  are  aware  of  the  smart  trick  that  Adhi  Sankarar  played   on  his  mother  in  order  to  get  her  permission  to  renounce  the  world  and  embrace  sainthood.  When BrahmachAri Sankarar  went  to  the  river  with  his  mother  for  bath,  He  purposely   got  himself  entangled  into  a  crocodile’s  mouth.  Mother was caught in a frenzy of fear and sorrow.  Sankarar told his mother, “Mother!  Do not fear! If you give me permission  to  become  a  Sanyasi,  the  crocodile  will  leave  me  alone.  Because,  if  I  renounce  the  world  and  accept  Sainthood,  it  is  equivalent  to  taking  a  fresh  birth.  Fate  has  decided  that  I  should  get  caught  by  a  crocodile  in  this  birth. It will not affect me in my next birth”.  Will  any  mother  refuse  to  grant  this,  in  a  delicate  uncertainty  like  this ?  AchAryAr   acted  smartly  this  way  ,  got  his  mother’s  permission  and   took  the  oath  for  renouncing  the  world.  The crocodile immediately let him go.

When  MahAlakshmi  told  VidhyAranyar  that  he  did  not  have  the  eligibility  to  possess  wealth  in  this  birth,  he  also  played  the  same  tactics!  He took up sainthood immediately.  He told Lakshmi, “Mother !  I got my next birth already.  Give me wealth  now!”

She,  in  turn,  showered  abundant  wealth  on  him  as  per  Her  promise.

Gold  and  all  the  wealth  in  the  world  was  heaped  around  him.  But  VidhyAranyar  who  is  now  a  Sanyasi,  was  overwhelmed  with   unbearable  sorrow  and  disappointment.  “Oh!  I  thought  that  I  had  played  a  trick  and  won;  but  in  fact  I  have cheated  myself.  I  begged  for  wealth  to  remove  the  poverty  in  the  home.  But where is the home for me now?  SanyAsi should not touch the wealth at all!  I have bought myself this difficulty stupidly. Had  I  continued  to  live  as  a  poor  man  and  died, I  would  have  at  least  got  all  this  wealth  in  my  next  birth  and  could  have  enjoyed  life.”—He started crying.

VidhyAranyar  was  not  alone  in  this  situation.  Many  among  us  pray  God  for  unwanted  things,  and  after  He  gives  us  what  we  wanted,  we  cry, “ Oh!  Why should there be a thing like ‘Our wants’?  Why did I not leave it to Him?  Now I  have  brought  on  myself  unwanted  miseries  due  to  my  ignorance!” .  Leaving  everything  to  Him  knowing  that  He knows  what  we  want,  is  the  wise  thing  to  do.

But,  as  VidhyAranyar  was  an  intelligent  person,  His  sorrow  faded  away  and  clarity  came  on.  He  understood  that  there  must  be  a  specific  purpose  for  which  AmbAl  had  enacted  this  drama!

The  time  then  was  around  when  Mallikapur (the  muslim  king)  started  his  war  on  South  India.  He had gone up to Rameswaram and caused extensive damages.  In  particular,  he  did  a  lot  of  damage  to  our  temples.  He destroyed our DharmAs.  At  that  time  there  was  no  Hindu  kingdom  to  oppose  him.

Now VidhyAranyar thought of this great ‘Punya Karma’.  ‘There is so much wealth here.  Due  to  AmbAl’s  Anugraham,  I  have  sufficient  intelligence  to  help  run  a  kingdom.  With  these  two  strengths  of  wealth  and  Intelligence,  we  will  help  a  big  kingdom  to  be  established’—He  decided.

His personal loss became a benefit to ‘SanAthana Hindu Dharmam’.
