வைசாக சுக்கிலபக்ஷ பஞ்சமி ஸ்ரீ சங்கராசாரிய ஸ்வாமிகளின் அவதார தினம். அப்பொழுது நக்ஷத்திரம் சிவபெருமானுக்குறிய திருவாதிரையாகவோ, அல்லது ஸ்ரீ ராமனுக்குறிய புனர்வஸுவாகவோ அமையும்.

ஸ்ரீ ஆதிசங்கர ஜயந்தியானது மற்ற ஜயந்திகளைவிடப் பெரிய புண்ணியகாலம் என்று நான் நினைப்பது வழக்கம். இப்படி நான் சொல்லுவதற்கு உங்களுக்கு இரண்டு காரணங்கள் தோன்றலாம். ‘நம்முடையது’ என்ற அபிமானத்தால் சொல்கிறேனோ என்பது ஒன்று. இப்போது பேசப்படும் விஷயம் ஸ்ரீ சங்கர ஜயந்தியாதலால், அதைச் சற்று உயர்த்திப் பேசுகிறேனோ என்பது இரண்டாவது. இந்த இரண்டும் இல்லாமல், வேறு ஒரு முக்கியமான காரணத்தாலேயே ஸ்ரீ சங்கர ஜயந்தியை ஸர்வ உத்கிருஷ்டமான புண்ய காலம் என்கிறேன்.

அது என்ன காரணம்? ஸ்ரீ சங்கர அவதாரத்துக்கு முன் வைதிக மதம் ஆட்டம் கண்டபோது, அதுவரை வேத புராணங்களால் விதிக்கப்பட்ட புண்ணிய காலங்கள் எல்லாம் தத்தளித்தன. ஒரு மதத்தில் நம்பிக்கை போனால், அந்த மதப்பண்டிகைகளை யார் கொண்டாடுவார்கள்? வேத தர்மத்துக்கு ஆபத்து வந்த போது, அம்மதப் பண்டிகைகள் எல்லாவற்றுக்கும் ஆபத்து வந்துவிட்டது. ஆப்போது ஸ்ரீ சங்கர ஜயந்தி நிகழ்ந்தால்தான் அந்தப் புண்ணிய காலங்கள் எல்லாம் மீண்டும் நிலை நிறுத்தப்பட்டன. ஸ்ரீ சங்கர ஜயந்தி நிகழ்ந்திராவிடில், இன்று ஸ்ரீராம நவமியும், கோகுலாஷ்டமியும், சிவராத்திரியும், நவராத்திரியும் மற்ற புண்ணிய தினங்களும் கொண்டாடுவோமா என்பதே சந்தேகம். மற்ற ஜயந்திகளையெல்லாம் நிலைநாட்டிய ஜயந்தியாக இதுவே இருக்கிறது. ஆகையினால்தான் ஸ்ரீ சங்கர ஜயந்தியை மிக மிகப் புண்ணிய காலமாகச் சொல்கிறேன்.

தனி மனிதராக இருந்துகொண்டு அந்தச் சாமானிய பிராம்மண சந்நியாசி தேசம் முழுவதிலும் ஒரு இடம் பாக்கி வைக்காமல் திக்விஜயம் செய்து இந்த மகத்தான அநுக்கிரகத்தைச் செய்தார். ‘திக்விஜயம்’ என்றால் அவர் செய்ததுதான் ‘திக்விஜயம்’.

The Greatest Jayanthi of All Jayanthi’s

Sri Sankara’s birth anniversary falls on Vishaka month, Sukla Paksha, Panchami Thithi.  That day, it would be either the Arudhra star of Lord Shiva or Punarvasu of Sri Rama.

I always thought that the birth anniversary of Sri Adi Sankara was holier than any other Jayanthis.  You may presume two reasons for my saying this.  One could be due to the pride that He belongs to our faith (Sampradaya).  Secondly, it could be because, we are presently discussing about the birth of Sri Adi Sankara.  I will tell you one important reason which is neither of these, as to why I consider the anniversary of Sri Sankara as the holiest of all Jayanthis.

What is that reason? When the Vedic religions were adversely impacted during the days before the birth of Sri Sankara, it was a struggle for observing the holy events prescribed in the Vedas and Saastras.  If faith in a religion is lost, who will celebrate the religious events? When the Vedas were endangered, the holy celebrations prescribed in
the Vedic religions were also endangered.  They were revived only because of the birth of Sri Sankara.  If this had not taken place, it is doubtful whether we would be celebrating Sri Ram Navami, Gokulashtami, Sivarathri, Navarathri and other holy festivals, today. This birth anniversary festival of Sri Sankara has become the festival which has re-established the other ones.  That is why, I consider this as the most holy one (Jayanthi of Jayaanthi’s).

As a single individual, the ordinary Brahmin hermit covered the entire country, without leaving any place and has bestowed on us this great blessing.  If anything is to be called ‘Dik Vijayam’, it is what he has done.
