ஸ்வாமிநாதன் ஸ்வாமிகளாவதற்கு முந்தைய ஆண்டு, அப்போதைய ஸ்ரீ காமகோடி பீடாதிபதிகள் திண்டிவனத்திலிருந்து சில கல்கள் அப்பாலுள்ள சாரம் என்ற கிராமத்தில் முகாமிட்டிருந்தார். அதற்குச் சிறிது காலத்திற்கு முன்பு அவர் திண்டிவனத்திற்கு அருகிலுள்ள மற்றோர் ஊரான பெருமுக்கலில் சாதுர்மாஸ்யத்திற்காக எழுந்தருளியிருந்தார். அப்போதே அப் பீடாதிபதி ஸ்வாமிகளுக்கும் ஸ்வாமிநாதனுக்குமிடையே ஒரு காந்த ஈர்ப்பு ஏற்பட்டிருந்தது. பன்னிரு பிராயப் பள்ளி மாணவனிடம் ஜகதாசார்யரொருவர் அந்தரங்கமாக உரையாட அப்படி என்ன விஷயம் இருக்கும் என ஊரார் வியக்கும் விதத்தில் இருவரிடையே சந்திப்புக்களும் ஏற்பட்டிருக்கின்றன. ஆயினும் அந்த ஸாமீப்ய சந்திப்புக்களை விடவும் சாதுர்மாஸ்யம் முடித்துப் பீடாதிபதிகள் விச்வரூப யாத்ரை என்பதாக இரு மாத முகாமிலிருந்து புறப்பாடு செய்து அவ்வூர் ஆலயத்திற்குச் செல்ல, ஆலயத்திலிருந்த ஆசார்ய தேவரை எட்டத்திலிருந்து பாலகன் பார்த்தபோதே அவனுக்கு “இன்னன்னு சொல்லத் தெரியாத ஏதோ ஓண்ணு மனஸுலே ஆழப் பதிஞ்சுது!
தமது வெளி வாழ்க்கை விவரங்கள் ஏராளமாக, தாராளமாக இக்கட்டுரையாசிரியனிடம் கூறியுள்ள மஹா பெரியவாள் தம்முடைய உள்வாழ்க்கை விவரங்களை மட்டும் ‘டிப் ஆஃப் தெ ஐஸ்பெர்க்’க்கும் குறைவாகவே காட்டியதில், மேலே சொன்னதற்கதிகம் தெரிவிக்காமல் கழற்றிக் கொண்டுவிட்டார்.!
ஆக, அந்த ‘இன்னன்னு சொல்லத் தெரியாத ஏதோ ஒண்ணு’ பாலகனைச் சும்மா இருக்கவிடவில்லை. அப்போதைக்கு அப்பா – அம்மாவோடு அவன் ஊர் திரும்பினானாலும், சிறிது காலத்திற்குப் பின் பீடாதிபதிகள் சாரம் கிராமத்திற்கு விஜயம் செய்திருக்கிறாரென்று தெரிந்தபோது அந்த ‘ஏதோ ஒண்ணு’ அவனை உந்திக் கிளறியது; வீட்டை விட்டுக் கிளப்பியது.
ஓருநாள் விடியுமுன்னர் வீட்டினரிடம் சொல்லிக் கொள்ளாமல் ஸ்ரீமட முகாமுக்குப் புறப்பட்டான்.
ஒரு துணை சேர்த்துக்கொள்ள இளநெஞ்சு விரும்பியது. கிளாஸ்மேட் கிருஷ்ணஸ்வாமியின் வீட்டுக்குச் சென்றான். கும்பகர்ண உபாஸனை நன்கு செய்து கொண்டிருந்த அவனை ரகசியமாகக் ‘கடத்தி’ப் போக முடியாததால், அவனுடன் உறங்கிக் கொண்டிருந்து, சட்டென விழிப்புப் பெற்ற அவனுடைய உறவுக்காரப் பிள்ளை ஒருத்தனைச் சப்தம் செய்யாது தன்னோடு வருமாறு ஸமிக்ஞை செய்தான்.
சிட்டுக்கள் இரண்டும் பறந்தன.
ஆசார்யபாதரின் ஸ்ரீபாதத்தை நாடி ஓடிக் கொண்டிருந்த பாலனுக்குக் கால் வலி கண்டது. அயனாக அச்சமயம் பார்த்து மடத்து வண்டி ஒன்று சாரம் நோக்கிப் போவது தெரிந்தது. அந்த வண்டியைப் பிடித்து அதில் ஏறிச் செல்லலாம் என்ற எண்ணத்தில் இரு சிறுவர்களும் வலித்த காலை மேலும் கடுக முடுக்கி விரைந்தனர்.
அப்போது ஸ்வாமிநானின் ஆனந்தம் ஒரு க்ஷணம் பொங்குமாறு வண்டிக்கு முன்னே பீடாதிபதிகளின் மேனா செல்வதையும் கண்டான். ஆயினும் அந்த ஆனந்தம் ஏன் ஒரே க்ஷணந்தான் பொங்கிவிட்டு அமுங்கிப் போயிற்றென்றால்., மேனாவை தூக்கும் போயிகள் அதி வேகமாகச் சென்று கொண்டிருந்தார்கள். சுற்றுப்புற கிராமம் எதற்கோ முன்னாள் விஜயம் செய்துவிட்டுப் பீடாதிபதிகள் இன்று இவ்விளங் காலையில் சாரம் முகாமுக்கு அவசரமாக விரைந்து கொண்டிருக்கிறார் என்பது புத்திசாலிப் பிள்ளைக்குப் புரிந்து விட்டதால், மேனா தரிசனத்தோடு சரி, மேனாரூடரை இப்போது தரிசிப்பதற்கில்லை என்பதை ஒரு மாதிரி ஜீர்ணித்துக் கொண்டான்.
முதலில் எண்ணியபடி மடத்து வண்டியில் இடம் கேட்க வேண்டியதுதான் என்று சிறுவர்கள் விரைந்து சென்று அவ் வண்டியைப் பிடித்தும் விட்டனர்.
வண்டிக்குள் ‘கார்வார்’ ஸ்ரீ வேங்கடராமய்யர் இருந்தார்.
தெலுங்கில் ‘காருபாரு’ என்றால் ஆட்சி நிர்வாகம். அதை வைத்துப் பெரிய ஸ்தாபனங்களின் நிர்வாகத்தில் முக்கியமான பொறுப்பு வகிப்பவருக்கு ‘கார்வார்’ என்ற பெயர் ஏற்பட்டது. ஸ்ரீ மடத்தின் தலைமை அதிகாரிக்கு ‘ஸ்ரீகார்யம்’, ‘ஏஜண்டு’ என்று பெயர்கள். ‘ஸர்வ முக்தியார்நாமா’ என்பதுமுண்டு. அடுத்து கஜானா அதிகாரியான ‘கஜான்ஜி’. மூன்றாவதாகக் ‘கார்வார்’. அப்புறம் ‘மேஸ்திரி’.
ஸ்ரீ மஹா பெரியவாள் பீடம் ஏறுவதற்குப் பல்லாண்டு முன்பே ஸ்ரீமடத்தில் சிப்பந்தி ஆன வேங்கடராமய்யர் பெரியவாளது பீடாதிபத்தியத்திலும் நெடுங்காலம் கறாராகக் கார்வார் செய்தவர்.
அந்தக் கறாரை அவர் அன்று அந்தச் சிறாரிடமும் காட்டிவிட்டார்!
வண்டியில் இடம் கேட்ட ஸ்வாமிநாதனிடம், “மடத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவர்களுக்குத்தான் மடத்து வண்டி” என்று விதிமுறை காட்டி, ஏற்றிக் கொள்ள மறுத்து விட்டார்.
முறுக்குப் பாட்டி விலை குறைத்துக்கொள்ள மறுத்தது போல! இப்படியும் இன்னொரு பரிபவம் தவக்குழந்தைக்கு!
ஆனால் அப்போது பாட்டியம்மையிடம் சவால் விட்டாற்போல இப்போது அவன் ஏதும் செய்யவில்லை.
தொடர்ந்தான் ‘நடராஜா ஸர்வீ’ ஸையே!
பாலர்கள் சாரம் முகாமை அடைந்தனர்.
முகாமில் குருநாதர் மலர்ந்து வரவேற்றார், சுத்தப் பிரேமையின் சாரமாக!
‘தனியாக இரண்டு சிறுவர்கள் வந்ததெப்படி?’ என்று கேட்காமல், ஸர்வ ஸஹஜமாக, “ஸ்வாமிநாதா, இங்கேயே இருந்துடேன்!” என்றார்.
பிற்காலம்தான் அதை எத்தனை தீர்க்க தரிசன வாக்காகக் கண்டது? ஆனால் அக் காலத்திலோ? இதற்கு முன் பாலகனுக்கும் ஸ்ரீகுருவை தரிசித்த சமயங்களில் வீடு திரும்பாமல் அவரோடயே இருந்தாலென்ன என்று தோன்றியதுண்டு. ஆனால் குறிப்பாக இச் சமயத்திலோ? பாலகன் அகத்தில் சொல்லிக்கொள்ளாமல் ஏதோ வேகத்தில் வந்து விட்டாலும், இப்போது தன்னை – ஸகாவையுந்தான் – காணாமல் அவரவர் வீட்டினர் எப்படித் தவிப்பார்கள் என்ற உணர்வைப் பெற்றுவிட்டதால் பீடாதிபதிகளிடம் உண்மையை ஓளிக்காமல் சொல்லி, சீக்கிரமே விடை தர உத்தரவு கேட்டான். (பிற்பாடும் அவன் அகத்தில் சொல்லிக் கொள்ளாமல்தான் ‘அங்கேயே இருந்து விடு’வதற்காக ஸ்ரீமடத்தினரால் கொத்திக் கொண்டு போகப்பட்டான்!)
“வந்தது வந்தே! ரெண்டு நாளாவது இருந்துட்டுப் போ. ஆத்துக்கு இப்பவே தகவல் அனுப்பிச்சுடறேன்” என்றார். சிறுவனிடம் தன் ஞான புத்திரனைக் கண்ட வாத்ஸல்ய குருநாத பிதா.
தகவலும் உடனே அனுப்பினார்.
இரண்டு நாள்களானபின் ஸ்வாமிநாதனுக்கு விடை தரும்போது சிப்பந்தி ஒருவரிடம் அவ்விரு பிள்ளைகளையும் ஸ்ரீமடத்து வண்டியிலேயே திண்டிவனத்திற்குக் கொண்டுவிடுமாறு ஆணை பிறப்பித்தார்.
மடத்தை சேர்ந்தவருக்கே மடத்து வண்டி என்ற நியாயப்படியும் அவர் இந்தப் பிள்ளைக்கு இந்த அதிசயமான வாஹன உபசாரம் செய்யலாம்தானே? ஆம், அப்போதேதான், ஏன், அதற்கு முந்தி ஸ்வாமிநானைக் கண்டவுடனேயேதான் அவர் தமது வாரிசாக அப்பிள்ளையை ஸங்கல்பித்தாயிற்றே!
மடத்து வண்டியில் வீடு புறப்பட்ட பாலர் அச்சமயம் கார்வார் அவர்களை நேரில் காணவில்லை. ஆயினும் மடத்து விவகாரங்கள் அணுவும் தப்பாமல் கறாராக கவனித்து வந்த அவர் இரு பள்ளிப் பிள்ளைகளுக்காக வண்டி அனுப்பப்பட்ட அதிசயத்தைத் தெரிந்து கொண்டேயிருப்பார். உள்ளூரப் பரிபவமும் பட்டிருப்பார். பாட்டியம்மை கதையேதான்!
அப்புறம், நாலைந்து மாதங்களுக்குள்ளேயே இந்த ஸ்வாமிநாதன் அடுத்த பீடாதிபதிபராகத் தேர்ந்தெடுக்கப் பட்டபோது, அன்றைய அவசர நெருக்கடியில் அப்போது ஸ்ரீமடம் முகாமிட்டிருந்த கலவையிலிருந்து வாரிசை அழைத்துவர கோவேறுக் கழுதை பூட்டிய வண்டியாக்கும் அனுப்பப்பட்டது! கும்பிடப்போன தெய்வம் குறுக்கே வந்தாற்போல நடுவழியில் ஸ்ரீமடத்தின் தனிப் பெரும் ராஜதானியான காஞ்சியிலேயே இளங்கோ எதிர்ப்பட, கோவேறு விலங்கு பூட்டிய வாஹனம் அங்கேயே அவனை ஏற்றிக் கொண்டு கலவை கொணர்ந்து சேர்த்தது.
இது சர்வ நிச்சயமாக கார்வாருக்குத் தெரிந்தே இருக்கும். ‘தெரிந்தே’ மட்டுமில்லை. வண்டியனுப்ப முடிவு செய்ததிலேயே அவர் பங்கும் இருந்திருக்கும்.
ஆயினும் இங்கும் அவரது பரிபவத்தை நமது கட்டுரை நாயகர் நேரில் காணவில்லை.
அப்புறம் சில காலமாயிற்று. இப்போது ஸ்வாமிநாதன் ஸ்வாமிகளாகிக் கார்வாருக்கும் மேலே ‘காருபாரு’ செய்யும் யஜமானர்!
அன்று ஏதேனும் விசேஷ நாளாக இருக்கலாம். மடத்து வண்டிகளுக்கெல்லாம் வர்ணம் அடித்து அலங்கரிக்கப்பட்டது.
பார்வையிடுவதற்காக ‘யஜமான’ ஸ்வாமியை அந்தக் கார்வார் அவர்களே அழைத்து வந்தார்!
அத்தனை வண்டிகளையும் தனது ஒளிக் கண்ணைச் சுழற்றிப் பார்த்தார் பாலகுருஸ்வாமி. கார்வாரையும் பார்த்தார் – பொருள் பொதிய; அவருடைய உள்ளத்திலேயே அந்தப் பொருள் புதைய!
‘ஒரு வண்டியில் இடம் தர மறுத்தோம். இன்று அத்தனை வண்டியும் அவரைச் சேர்ந்தது’ என்ற எண்ணத்தில் கார்வாரின் முகம் குனிந்தது.
குனிந்த முகத்தைக் குளிர நிமிர்த்தியது பாலகுரு ஸ்வாமியின் பாலான வாக்கு! பரிபவ உணர்வைத் துடைத்து இதம் செய்யும் பரிவுமொழி! அதில் நயமான நகைச்சுவையும்!
“அன்னிக்கு மடத்தைச் சேர்ந்தவாதான் வண்டில ஏறலாம்னுது! இப்போ இந்த வண்டி எல்லாம், இந்த மடமே, என்னெச் சேந்துதுன்னு பண்ணியிருக்கேள். ஆனா இப்பவும் நான் ஒரு வண்டியிலகூட ஏறமுடியாதபடிதான் இருக்கு” என்றார். சக்கரம் போட்ட வண்டியில் ஏறுவதேயில்லை என்ற துறவற நியமத்தை கறாராகக் கைக்கொண்ட ஸந்நியாஸச் சக்கரவர்த்தி!

STEP 6.
The year before Swaminathan became ‘Swamigal’, the then Sree Kamakoti Peetathipathi was camping in a place called ‘ SAram’ a few miles away from Tindivanam. Still before that time He had camped for Chaturmasya Vratam in another village Perumookkal also near Tindivanam (as we have already seen). There existed, at that time itself, a magnetic attraction between Swamigal and Swaminathan. There have been meetings between them which made the village folks wonder what sort of confidential matters the JagatAcharyar could have had to talk to a twelve year old school boy. But more than those meetings, when the Peetathipathikal concluded His Chaturmasya Vrata and went to the village temple in Viswaroopa YAtrA, Swaminathan had a look at Him from a distance, and at that time only, “something which cannot be expressed was etched deep into my mind.”
Mahaperiava, had given plenty of details on His outside life to this writer (Ra.Ganapathy), but what He had given about His ‘inner’ life was less than the ‘tip of the iceberg’. Hence He did not give more details than what He had said before.
Therefore, the ‘something which could not be expressed’ did not allow the boy to keep quiet. Though he returned home with his parents then, after sometime when he came to know that Peetathipathi had come down to the village Saram that ‘Something’ pushed him and drove him from home.
One day, he left for the SreeMatam camp before sunrise, without telling anybody in the house.
His tender heart wanted to take somebody with him for company. He went to his classmate Krishnasamy’s house. As he was having a sound sleep, he could not ‘abduct’ him ‘secretly’. But a relative of his who was sleeping by his side woke up. He called him silently and asked him to accompany him.
The two birds flew off.
The young boy who was running after the ‘Sree PAtham’ of the AchAryA, felt a lot of pain in the legs. Exactly at that time, a cart belonging to Sree Matam was proceeding towards SAram. Hoping to get a ‘lift’ in that vehicle, the two boys increased their speed unmindful of the pain in the leg.
Swaminathan, to his great pleasure saw the ‘MEnA’ (palanquin) of the Peetathipathi going in front of the cart. But it was only a momentary pleasure as the MEnA was going very fast. As he soon understood that Peetathipathikal was returning to ‘SAram’ camp in the early morning urgently after visiting a neighbouring village, he digested the inevitable—that he could only have Darsan of the MEnA and not its occupant.
As planned before, they returned to the cart behind and decided to ask for a lift. ‘KArvAr’ Sree Venkatramaiyer was sitting inside the cart.
In Telugu language, ‘KArubAru’ means administration of the government. Based on that, those who hold important positions in big organizations used to be called ‘KArvAr’. The top administrator of Sree Matam was called ‘KArubAru’, or ‘Agent’. They were also called ‘Sarva mukthiyArnAmA’. Next to him was the treasurer who was called ‘GajAnji’. The third in line is ‘KArvAr’, and then the Supervisor (Maestri).
Sree Venkatrama Iyer who was an employee of Sree Matam many years before Periava ascended the Peetam, was serving as ‘KArvAr’ for a long time during Periava’s reign as Peetathipthi.
The ‘KArvAr’ showed his ‘karAr’ (strictness) on the boys that day!
He told Swaminathan, who asked a lift, “The Sree Matam cart is only for the use of those belonging to the Matam”, and refused to take him in the vehicle.
Just like the ‘Murukkup Patti’( the old woman who sold ‘Murukku’) who refused to give him discount ! The Divine child had one more such disrespect shown to him!
But, Swaminathan did not throw any challenge this time, as he did with the ‘Murukku Patti’.
He continued walking.
The boys reached the ‘SAram’ camp.
GurunAthar welcomed him with the essence of pure love.
Instead of asking how the two boys came there, He said, “Swaminatha ! Why don’t you stay here itself?”
Oh! How the future proved those words to be words of prophecy ? But at that time ? Swaminathan also, in his many previous visits to have the Darsan of his ‘Parama Guru’, had in fact desired to stay back there and not returning home. But now, as he felt that his and his friend’s families will be worried at their sudden disappearance, he told Peetathipathi the truth and asked for leave. (Later also, he was ‘picked’ by the folks of Sree Matam to be there for good, without telling the family !)
“You have come anyway; stay here for at least two days and then leave. I will send the message to your home.”— Gurunathar, who found His ‘GnAnaPuththiran’ , told the boy with a lot of affection.
He immediately sent the message also.
After two days, He ordered an attendant to take the two boys in the Sree Matam vehicle itself and leave them in Tindivanam.
As per the rule of Sree Matam that its vehicle is solely for the use of Sree Matam personnel only, He probably could allow the vehicle to be used for leaving the two boys, is it not ? Yes, He had already decided during his previous visits, that he(Swaminathan) would be the heir—in—charge.
When Swaminathan left in the Sree Matam cart, he did not see the ‘KArvAr’. But he, who has been looking after the affairs of Sree Matam minutely would have certainly known the fact that the vehicle had been sent to leave them home, and might have felt a little guilty. The story (of Murukku Patti) repeats!
Within the next four or five months, when Swaminathan was elected as the next Peetathipahi, because of the critical circumstances prevailing then, a vehicle drawn by a mule was sent from Kalavai to fetch him! But on the way, in Kancheepuram itself the vehicle met with Swaminathan and took him to Kalavai.
This would have been certainly known to the ‘KArvAr’, and also he would have been a part to that decision.
But now also Sree Saranal did not have the opportunity to see him.
Some more time passed and Swaminathan became the Swamigal, who would ‘KArubAru’ over the ‘KArvAr’!
It was probably a special day. All the vehicles of Sree Matam were painted fresh and decorated.
The same ‘KArvAr’ lead his ‘boss’ Swami to have a look at them.’ |
The ‘Bala GurusAmi’ looked at all the vehicles with His shining eyes, and looked at the ‘KArvAr’ also—-a meaningful glance.
‘KArvAr’s face hung a little with the thought, ‘ I refused to give Him a lift in one vehicle, but now all these vehicles belong o Him’!
But, the kind words from BalaGuru lifted his hung face—-soothing words which wiped off his feeling of guilt. Laced with a little humour !
“That day, it was a rule that only those belonging to Matam can use the vehicle. Now you have made it that all these vehicles, and the whole Matam belong to me. But now also I am not destined to get into any vehicle.”—said the ‘SanyAsa Chakravarthi’, who had adopted the dictum of renunciation, that He would not travel in any vehicle fitted with wheels!
