பழந்தமிழ் நூல்களும் நம்முடைய வைதிக ஸமயாசாரங்களைப் பற்றி நிறையச் சொல்லியிருக்கின்றன. ‘ஆசாரக்கோவை’ என்றே ஒன்று இருக்கிறது. திருக்குறள் தொடங்கி ‘அவ்வை பாடல்கள்’, ‘நன்னெறி’, ‘அறநெறிச் சாரம்’  முதலான நூல்கள் நீதிகளையும் தர்மங்களையும் பொதுவாகச் சொல்லிக் கொண்டு போகும்போதே, அன்றாட வாழ்க்கையில் அநுஷ்டிக்க வேண்டிய வைதிகாசாரங்களுக்கும் அங்கங்கே குறிப்புக் காட்டிக் கொண்டு போகும். நீதி சாஸ்திரக் கருத்துக்களை அப்படியே மொழி பெயர்த்து ‘நீதி வெண்பா’ என்றும் இப்படியொரு புஸ்தகமிருக்கிறது. பழந்ததமிழ் நாட்டில் எந்த அரசனைப் பற்றியும் புராணத்திலோ, இலக்கியத்திலோ, சாஸனங்களிலோ சொல்லும்போது அவன் மநுநீதிப்படி மறைவழி வர்ணாச்சிரமங்களை முறை பிறழாமல் நன்றாகப் பரிபாலனம் செய்து வந்தானென்று தப்பாமல் சொல்லியிருப்பதைப் பார்க்கிறோம். இப்படிப் பொதுப்படையாக வைதிகாசாரங்களைச் சொல்வதோடு நிற்காமல் நித்யப்படி வாழ்க்கையில் ஒவ்வொரு கார்யமும் எப்படி சாஸ்திராசாரப்படிப் பண்ண வேண்டும் என்று விளக்கிச் சொல்வதற்கே ஏற்பட்டதுதான் நான் சொன்ன “ ஆசாரக்கோவை”.  தமிழிலே உயர்ந்த இலக்கிய ஸ்தானம் கொடுத்துப் போற்றும் நூல்களில் பதினெண் கீழ்க் கணக்கு என்று பதினெட்டு புஸ்தகங்கள் உண்டு. இந்தப் பதினெட்டில் ஒன்றுதான் திருக்குறள். இன்னொன்று ஆசாரக் கோவை. தமிழ் மக்கள் அதைப் பார்த்தால் ஆசாரங்கள் அத்தனையும் தெரிந்துகொண்டுவிடலாம். – ஜகத்குரு ஸ்ரீ சந்திரசேகரேந்திர சரஸ்வதி ஸ்வாமிகள்

The ancient Tamizh texts have said many things about our aacharams. There is a book by the name ‘Aachara Kovai’. Beginning with ‘Tirukkural’, texts like ‘Avvai Paadalgal’, ‘Nanneri’, ‘Araneri Saram’ etc. mention the general rules and dharmas. Here and there, these texts also mention the Vaidika aacharams to be followed in day to day life. There is a book that is the translation of law codes called ‘Neethi Venpa’. In ancient Tamizhnadu, wherever there is a reference to the kings, the puranas, literature, and inscriptions mention without fail that the king followed the codes as laid down by Manu and ruled his kingdom well. Apart from mentioning the general aacharams, the book ‘Aachara Kovai’ describes how every daily chore has to be done in accordance with the sastras. There are eighteen books in Tamizh which are valued for their high literary standards. These are called ‘Pathinen Keezh Kankku’. One of these eighteen is ‘Tirukkural’. Another is ‘Aachara Kovai’.
