கிருஷ்ண பக்தை  அம்மாளு அம்மாள் – Sri  J.K. SIVAN

கன்னட தேசத்துப் பெண் ஒருவள் அங்கே வாழும் பெரும்பாலானவர்கள் போல மாத்வ வகுப்பை சேர்ந்தவள்.  கும்பகோணத்தில் இத்தகைய ஒரு குடும்பத்தில் 1906ல் அவள் பிறந்தாள் .

அந்த கால  வழக்கப்படி குழந்தையாக இருந்த போதே அவளுக்கு கல்யாணம் நடந்தது. கல்யாணம் என்றால் என்ன  என்றே தெரியாத நிலையில், புருஷன் என்கிற பையன் பொறுப்பான கணவனாக மாறுவதற்கு முன்பே  மரணம் அடைந்ததால்  அவள் குழந்தை விதவை ஆகிவிட்டாள். அப்பப்பா,  அந்தக்கால விதவைகளுக்கு நிகழ்ந்த கொடுமைகளை எழுத்தால் விவரிக்க முடியாது.  சமூகத்தில் ஒதுக்கப்பட்ட ஜென்மங்கள். அந்த பெண் உருவத்தில் சிதைக்கப்பட்டு, உள்ளத்தில் நொறுக்கப்பட்டு,  சமூகத்தில் அபசகுனமாக வெறுக்கப்பட்டு உலகத்தால் சபிக்கப்பட்ட ஒரு ஜீவனாக பசியிலும் அவமானத்திலும் வளர்ந்து வாழ்ந்தாள்.  நரசிம்மனிடம், நாராயணனிடம், கிருஷ்ணனிடம்  அவள் கொண்ட பக்தி ஒன்றே அவளை உயிர்வாழ்வதில் கொஞ்சமாவது  அக்கறை கொள்ள செய்தது.

இந்த  சமூகம்  எனும் கொடிய  உலகத்திலிருந்து,  நரகத்திலிருந்து விடுதலைபெற தற்கொலை செய்து கொள்ள முயற்சித்தாள் .  பக்கத்தில் ஒரு ஆழமான குளம். கண்களை மூடி ஒருநாள் ”பகவானே, என்னை ஏற்றுக் கொள் ” என்று குதிக்கும்போது  ”நில்”  என்று ஒரு குரல் தடுத்தது.  கண் விழித்தாள்.  உக்கிரமான நரசிம்மன் அவள் எதிரே சாந்த ஸ்வரூபியாக நின்றான்.

”எதற்காக  இந்த தற்கொலை முயற்சி உனக்கு. உனக்கு கடைசி நிமிஷம் வரை  உண்ண உணவும்,  உடுக்க உடையும், இருக்க நிழலும் தான் கிடைக்க போகிறதே” என்ற நரசிம்மனை வாழ்த்தி வணங்கினாள் .

”பகவானே, எனக்கு  ஒரு வரம் தா’.’

”என்ன கேள் அம்மாளு”.  அவள் எல்லோராலும் அம்மாளு  என்று தான் அழைக்கப்பட்டவள்.

”எனக்கு பசியே இருக்கக் கூடாது”.

”அம்மாளு , இனி உனக்கு பசி என்றால் என்ன என்றே தெரியாது. போதுமா” என்று தெய்வம் வரமளித்தது.

அன்று முதல், ஒரு நாளைக்கு ஒருமுறை  ஒரு  டம்பளர் மோர், பால், ஏதாவது ஒரு  பழம் என்று கடைசி வரை வாழ்ந்த அம்மாளு அம்மாள் உணவை தொடவில்லை. ஏகாதசி அன்று அதுவும் கிடையாது. உற்சாகத்தோடு இருந்தாள்.  கிருஷ்ண  பஜனையில்  நாள் தோறும் அற்புதமாக  தன்னை மறந்த நிலையில்  கடைசி மூச்சு பிரியும் வரை ஈடுபட்டாள்.

இளம்  விதைவையாக வாழ்ந்த அம்மாளு அம்மாளுக்கு  ஒரு நாள் பாண்டுரங்கன் கனவில்  உத்தரவிட்டான்.

”நீ  பண்டரிபுரம் வாயேன்” என்றான் பண்டரிநாதன்.

இந்த குரல் அவளை மறுநாள் பொழுது விடிந்ததும் பண்டரிபுரம் போக வைத்தது. எப்படி தனியாக போவது என்று அவளது அம்மாவை ”நீயும் என் கூட வா” என்று கூப்பிட வைத்தது. அம்மா வரவில்லை. தனியாக கட்டிய துணியோடும் ,தம்புராவோடும்  பண்டரிபுரம் சென்றவள் பல வருஷங்கள் அங்கேயே தங்கிவிட்டாள் .  கோவிலை அலம்பினாள் , பெருக்கினாள், கோலமிட்டாள்,  மலர்கள் பறித்து மாலை தொடுத்தாள், சூட்டினாள்,  பாடினாள் நிறைய  பக்ஷணங்கள், உணவு  வகைகள் சமைத்தாள். எல்லாம் அவளது அடுப்பில் குமுட்டியிலும் தான். பாண்டுரங்கனுக்கு திருப்தியோடு  அர்பணித்தாள் . எல்லோருக்கும் அவற்றை பிரசாதமாக விநியோகித்தாள். ஆனால் அவைகளில் ஒரு துளியும் அவள் உட்கொள்ளவில்லை.

அந்த ஊர் ராணி, அம்மாளுவின் பூஜைக்காக  வெள்ளி தங்க பாத்திரங்கள் நிறைய கொடுத்தாள். கண்ணில் கண்டவர்களுக்கு எல்லாம் அவற்றை அப்படியே  விநியோகம் செய்து விட்டாள் அம்மாளு அம்மாள். பணத்தை தொட்டதே இல்லை.  கீர்த்தனங்கள் சர மாரியாக அவள் வாயிலிருந்து பிறந்தன.  எந்த க்ஷேத்ரம் சென்றாலும் அந்த ஸ்தல மஹிமை அப்படியே அவள் பாடலில் த்வனிக்கும், அவள் அந்த க்ஷேத்ரங்களுக்கு அதற்கு முன் சென்றதில்லை, ஒன்றுமே தெரியாது,  என்றாலும் இந்த அதிசயம் பல க்ஷேத்ரங்களில் நடந்திருக்கிறது! இன்னொரு  அதிசயம் சொல்கிறேன்.

ஒரு பெரியவர்  மரணத்தருவாயில் இருக்கும்போது உறவினர்கள் அம்மாளுவை அவரிடம் அழைத்து போனார்கள். அவரைப் பார்த்ததும் அவர் உயிர் பிரிந்து போவது தெரிந்தது. உடனே அம்மாளு  தன்னை மறந்த நிலையில் கண்களை மூடி பாடினாள். அவரது உயிரை ராம நாமம்  தூக்கி செல்வது அவளுக்கு தெரிந்தது. அதை பாடினாள். அருகே இருந்த உறவினர்களுக்கு  அந்த மனிதர்  ராம நாமம் உபதேசம் பெற்று ஜபித்து வந்தவர் என்பதே தெரியாது. பிறகு தான் தெரிந்தது!

அம்மாளு அம்மாள் நரசிம்மனை மறப்பாளா?  தன் உயிரைக் காத்து புதிய பாதை அமைத்துக் கொடுத்த நரசிம்மனுக்கு ஜெயந்தியை விமரிசையாக கொண்டாடினாள்.  அன்று  108 வகை பிரசாதங்கள், பக்ஷணங்களை ஆசையோடு  தயாரித்தாள். வழக்கமான  உணவும் இதைத்தவிர சமைத்தாள்.  ” இந்தா  நரசிம்மா வா, வந்து இதை ஏற்றுக்கொள்”  என்று  அர்பணித்தாள். அன்று வெகு அருமையான கீர்த்தனங்களை பொழிவாள். தானாகவே  தைல தாரையாக  ஆயிரக்கணக்கான ஸ்லோகங்கள், கீர்த்தனைகள் அவள் வாயிலிருந்து புறப்பட்டிருக்கிறது.

ஒரு ஆச்சர்யமான சம்பவம் சொல்கிறேன் கேளுங்கள்.  மஹா பெரியவா கும்பகோணத்தில் தங்கி இருந்த போது  ஒருநாள் ஒரு மாத்வர்  ”என் பெண்ணுக்கு  கல்யாணம். பெரியவா  ஆசீர்வாதம் அனுக்கிரஹம் பெற வந்திருக்கிறேன்”  என்கிறார்.

”என்கிட்டே எதுக்கு வந்திருக்கே? மரத்தடியில் ஒரு நித்ய உபவாசி இருக்காளே  அவா கிட்டே போய்  ஆசிர்வாதம் வாங்கிக்கோ.  உனக்கு சர்வ மங்களமும் சித்திக்கும்.  வேண்டிக் கொண்ட  எண்ணங்களும்  நிறைவேறும் ”.பெரியவா இவ்வாறு அம்மாளு அம்மாளின்  மஹத்வத்தை எல்லோருக்கும் அறிவித்ததற்கு பிறகு நிறைய பக்தர்கள் அம்மாளுவை சூழ்ந்து கொண்டார்கள்.  மஹா பெரியவா ஒரு தடவை    ”அம்மாளு அம்மாள் புரந்தர தாசர் அம்சம்”  என்று கூறியிருக்கிறார்.

பாகவத தர்மத்தின்  உதாரணமாக நித்ய பஜனை, ஆடல் பாடல் என்று அவள் வாழ்க்கை பூரணமாக கடந்தது. கிருஷ்ணனை நேரில் கண்டாள்  என்பார்கள்.

ஒரு சமயம் சென்னை ஜார்ஜ் டவுனில் நாராயண முதலி தெருவில் நாராயண செட்டி சத்திரத்தில் அம்மாளு அம்மாள் தங்கியிருந்தார். அப்போது  சென்னையில் பொருட்காட்சி நடந்து கொண்டிருந்தது. அதிலே பங்கேற்ற நாட்டியக் கலைஞர்கள் கோபிநாத் மற்றும் தங்கமணி, தம் குழுவினருடன்  இரவு நேரக் கலை நிகழ்ச்சியை முடித்துவிட்டு அம்மாளு அம்மாள் தங்கியிருந்த சத்திரத்தின் மேல் தளத்திற்கு வந்து ஓய்வெடுத்துக் கொண்டிருந்தனர். நள்ளிரவு 12 மணியைத் தாண்டிய நிலையில் சற்றே கண்ணயரும் நிலையில், கீழே தாள சப்தமும், நர்த்தனம் ஆடும் சப்தமும் கேட்டதும் இந்நேரத் தில் யார் ஆடுவார்?  ப்ரமையோ என்றிருந்தனர். மீண்டும் மீண்டும் இன்னமும் சப்தம் அதிகரிக்க,  நாட்டியக் கலைஞர்கள் கீழே வந்து பார்த்தபோது அம்மாளு அம்மாள் தன்னை மறந்து ஆடிக் கொண்டிருந்தார்.

உடனே தாளத்தை வாங்கி நாட்டியத்தில் அனுபவம் மிக்க கலைஞர்கள் தாளம் போட்டனர். சுமார் இரண்டு மணி நேரம் அவர்களை மறந்து நாட்டியத்தில் லயித்தனர். கேதார ராகத்தில் ‘பாலக் கடல சய்யா’ எனும் கீர்த்தனம் பிறந்தது. எல்லாம் முடிந்ததும் நாட்டியக் கலைஞர்கள் அம்மாளு அம்மாவை வணங்கி, ‘‘சில ஜதிகள், நாட்டிய சாஸ்திரம் நன்கு கற்றவர்களாலேயே ஆட முடியாது. அதைப்போன்ற, எவராலும் சாதாரணமாக ஆட முடி யாத தெய்வீக நர்த்தனத்தை இன்று கண்டோம். இது யாரிடமும் பயின்று வருவதல்ல, யாராலும் பயிற்றுவிக்க முடியாததும்கூட’’ என்று கூறி பிரமித்து  நின்றனர். ‘‘இன்று இதைக் கண்டது நாங்கள் செய்த பேறு’’ என உணர்ச்சிவசப்பட்டனர். இவள்  புரந்தர தாஸரின் அவதாரம் என்று ஒருமனதாக புகழ்ந்தார்கள்.

2002ல்  மதுராபுரி ஆஸ்ரமத்தில்  94வயதில் நேரிலேயே கல்யாண ஸ்ரீனிவாச பெருமாள் தரிசனம் கிடைத்தது.  அந்த கணமே   ”நாக்கு கால மூர்தியு நீனே ‘‘nAkku kAla murtiyu neenE’  நீ தானே  நாலு கால மூர்த்தி என பாடினாள் . அந்த நாலு கால மூர்த்திகள் யார்?  விடியற்காலையில் ஸ்ரீமந்  நாராயணன், காலை முடியும் நேரம் ஸ்ரீ ராமன்,  அந்தி நேரத்தில்  ஸ்ரீ லக்ஷ்மிநரசிம்மன்,  இரவில் ஸ்ரீ வேணுகோபாலன், கோபிநாதன்.

பங்குனி உத்தரம் சிறந்த நாள். கௌரி சிவனை அடைந்தாள்.  சீதை ராமனை அடைந்தாள். ஆண்டாள் பரமனை அடைந்தாள். கடைசி காலங்களை  கும்பகோணத்தில் கழித்தாள்.  வயதானாலும் கிருஷ்ணனை தூங்கப் பண்ணி, எழுப்பி, குளிப்பாட்டி,  சிங்காரித்து, ஆடைகள் அணிவித்து, பாடி, உணவு சமைத்து நிவேதித்து, தாயாக  பாண்டுரங்கனுக்கு  சேவை செய்தவள்  அம்மாளு அம்மாள்.கிருஷ்ண பக்தை அம்மாளு  அம்மாள் 104 வயது வாழ்ந்து  2010 பங்குனி உத்திரம் அன்று  சித்தி அடைந்தாள். அதற்கு சில நாட்கள் முன்பே  அவளது நாவில் ஒரு பாடல்  வைகுண்டம் எப்படி இருக்கும் என விவரித்தது .

அவளது குரு ராமச்சந்திர தீர்த்தர்  சமாதி கும்பகோணம் காவிரிக்கரையில் அமரேந்திர புரத்தில் உள்ளது.

A few days before her departure from the world a kirtan describing the Vaikuntam fell out of her lips in divine trance!

“kalau khalu bhavishyanti nArayana parAyanAh

kvachit kvachin mahArAja dravideshu cha bhUrishaha

tAmraparNI nadI yatra krutamAlA payasvini

kAverI cha mahApuNyA pratichI cha mahAnadI”

கலியுகத்தில்,   த்ராவிட தேசம் எனும் தென்னிந்தியாவில்,  தாமிரபரணி, க்ருதமாலா, பயஸ்வினி, காவேரி, மகாநதி போன்ற  புண்ய நதிக்கரை பிரதேசங்களில் எண்ணற்ற  நாராயண பக்தர்கள் தோன்றுவார்கள்  என்று மேலே கண்ட ஸ்லோகம் சொல்கிறது. ஆகவே தான் அற்புத  ஆழ்வார்கள் போல் அம்மாளு அம்மாளும் நம்மிடையே தோன்றி இருக்கிறாள்.

Krishna Devotee Pujaya Sri Ammaalu Ammaal

In Karnataka, majority of the families belong to Madhwa community.  One such family lived in Kumbakonam.  This lady was born in this family in 1906.

According to the old tradition, she got married when she was a child.  Even before understanding the concept of marriage, her husband died and she became a widow at such a young age.   It is so difficult to explain in words how these widows were ill-treated and tortured by their own families and society those days.    Not only this young girl’s appearance changed but mentally also she was wounded.  She was considered as a bad omen in the society.  She spent her days in hunger and taking insults, like a person cursed by the whole world.  She was hanging on to life only because of her devotion to Lord Narasimha, Narayana and Krishna.

She even tried to kill herself to escape from this hell.  She went to a nearby pond which was very deep.  She stood nearby and closed her eyes “Hey Bhagwan! Please take me”.  When she was about to jump, she heard a voice “stop”.  She opened her eyes and saw Lord Narasimha.   “Why do you want to kill yourself?  Until your last day of life, you are going to get food, clothes and a place to stay.”

She said “Hey Bhagawan! Give me a boon”.

“Ask whatever you want Ammalu”.  She was called by that name only by everyone.

“I should not have hunger at all”.

“From now you will not feel hungry at all.  Is that ok?” said Lord Narasimha.

From that day onwards, she had just a glass of buttermilk, milk and one fruit every day.  She never touched any other food till the last day of her life.  On the day of Ekadashi, she did not eat that also.  She was very happy and immersed herself in the Krishna bhajans till she had her last breath.

One day, Lord Pandurangan appeared in the young widow’s dream and said “Why not you come to Pandaripuram?”

She decided to heed to the voice and go to Pandariupuram.  She asked her mother to accompany her.  Mother did not go.  She decided to go alone.  She left the place with just one Tambura and the clothes she were wearing.  She stayed in Pandariupuram for years together.

She swept and washed the temple every day; drew kolam; plucked flowers and made gardlands for the Lord; sang so many songs; cooked variety of dishes in her small coal stove.  She offered everything to Pandurangan.  She distributed all the food but never tasted even a little bit.

The Queen of that town gave some gold and silver vessels to Ammalu for the prayers.  She distributed all those to people.  She never touched money at all.  Songs came fluently from her mouth like a flow of stream.   Wherever she went, she sang and her songs reflected the specialty of that place.  She never visited those places earlier.  Still these wonders happened.

There was another amazing incident.

There was an elderly person in his deathbed.  His relatives took him to Ammaalu Ammal.  She realized that his soul was leaving.  Immediately she closed her eyes and started singing.  She went into trance and could see his soul being carried by the Rama Naamam.  Until then, his relatives were not aware of the fact that this elderly man had taken Upadesa and was chanting Rama Naamam all the time.

Can she forget Lord Narasimha who showed her a new path?  She celebrated Narasimha Jayanthi in a grand manner.  With so much love and affection for the Lord, she prepared 108 types of prasadam apart from the regular food.    She offered everything to Narasimha “Come Narasimha.  Take everything”.  That day she would sing beautiful songs.   Just like a stream, thousands of songs and slokas came from her.

There was another surprising incident.  One day, when Sri Kanchi Periyava was staying in Kumbakonam, an elderly man from a Madhwa family went to see him.  He said “I have come here to get Sri Periyava’s blessings for my daughter.  She is getting married soon”.

Sri Periyava said “Why are you here?  Can you see that lady under the tree?  She is a Nithya Upavasi.  Go to her and get her blessings.   All your wishes will be fulfilled”.

The moment Sri Periyava spoke about the greatness of this lady, many people visited her.  Sri Periyava even said once “Ammalu Ammal is manifestation of Sri Purandaradasar.”

She lived as per the Bhagavatha Dharmam with daily bhajans, singing and dancing.  Some even say she saw Krishna in person.

Once in Chennai George town, she was staying the Narayana Chetti Choultry in the Narayana Mudhali Street.  That time, there was an exhibition going on in Chennai.   One night, the famous dancers Gopinath, Thangamani after finishing their program in the exhibition, went to the Choultry with their group and rested there.    After midnight, they heard some sound of someone singing and dancing.  First they thought it was their imagination.  As the noise level increased, they went down and saw a wonderful sight.  Ammalu ammal was in a trance and dancing beautifully.  The musicians started playing the drums and for the next two hours they all forgot themselves and immersed in the beautiful dance.   Out came the beautiful keertan in Kedhara Raga “Bala katala chayya”.

After everything was over the musicians fell at her feet and said “Amma! There are certain dancing steps which cannot be performed by even well trained dancers.  We saw all that in your divine dance.  We are all blessed to see this”.  They became so emotional.  They all praised her that she is definitely a manifestation of Purandaradasr.

In 2002, at the age of 94, she had the opportunity to see Kalyana Srinivasa Perumal at the Mathurapuri Ashram.  There came another beautiful composition “nAkku kAla murtiyu neenE – you are the four kAla murthis”.  Who are the four kAla murthis? Sriman Narayanan in the early morning, Sri Ramar in the morning, Sri Lakshmi Narasimhar at the Sandhya kAlam and Sri Venugopalan, Gopinathan at night.

Even during her last days, Ammalu ammal spent her time in giving bath to Krishna, dressed him, cooked for him and offered to him just a like a mother would do to her child.

Puranas say Panguni Uthiram is a very special day as Mata Gowri married Lord Shiva; Sita Mata married Lord Rama; Andal married Paramatma.   On on such Panguni Uthiram day, in the year 2010, the great Krishna devotee Ammalu ammal left this world and attained mukthi.

Few days before her final departure from the world, in her divine trance stage, she sang a song describing Sri Vaikuntam, abode of Sriman Narayana.

Srimad Bhagavatam says:

“Kalau khalu bhavishyanti nArayana parAyanAh
kvachit kvachin mahArAja dravideshu cha bhUrishaha
tAmraparNI nadI yatra krutamAlA payasvini
kAverI cha mahApuNyA pratichI cha mahAnadI”

This sloka says: “In Kaliyugam, in Southern Part of India also known as Dravida desam, many Narayana devotees will appear near the river banks such as Tamirabarani, Kruthamala, Payaswini, Cauvery Mahariver.”

Is it any wonder that Ammalu ammal lived among us just like the Azhwars and other devotees of the Lord as described in the Bhagavatam?

The Samadhi of her Guru Sri Ramachandra Theerthar is situated on the banks of river Cauvery in Kumbakonam, Amarendrapuram.
